To the START!
It's not even out yet guys chill the hell down.
It's not gone, it's just transparent by default and the start menu is just full screen now.
• You can still click that and get a start menu where all your programs are listed, it now shows more by default.
• You can still hit the winkey and click on a program icon to open it.
• You can still right click to open as admin. Ctrl+Shift+Enter still works for opening as admin.
• You can still hit the winkey and start typing to search.
• You can still use it as a run dialog, even though Win+R still exists.
• You can still use it to open control panel, computer, etc.
• You can still use it to do every single thing you could before with the old start menu and old start button.
No functionality has been lost, only gained, which you don't have to use. You can use it in the same exact way you did with the old start menu, all existing functionality remains.
I really hate it when articles are written like this. Implying that Microsoft has removed a feature altogether and giving no reason as to why the decision was made. By this article it'd make you think that they just decided "Hey let's tear shit out for no reason, that'll be great" when in fact it isn't even remotely the case.
next development: Cannot use mice with Windows 8, you must use a Kinect™ sensor in order to navigate menus! How revolutionary!
some of you are so ridiculously incapable of reading the actual article.

So it was a press misunderstanding?

ADD
I love what I've used of 7 so even if this one is good, I'm not exactly going to rush out for it
Did anyone of you that's complaining about this ever try windows 8? The start button is useless.
So it was a press misunderstanding?
Both yes and no.
The image is gone, yes, however the button isn't, it's just transparent (for now at least) and less wide. All the functionality of the previous start menu is still there. Every bit of it. It even offers some benefits due to its large size, like thumbnailing of documents and images you might search for.
What the article doesn't state is that, this whole thing about the button being gone is nothing more than "they changed the image to be transparent" and they and others write it off as if a huge chunk of functionality was just removed.
But how will i start my computer?
God fucking damn it
Tablets are not fucking everything, desktop PCs are still the best. Why can't anyone realize this? Stupid gimmick shit.
Hovering over it now doesn't do anything except make it shine which offers no use. You can still use the desktop exactly like you do in 7. The only thing different is the way the start menu looks.
I don't like change

It's been observed that everyone sees the first computer layout they ever used as ideal, then judges all later layouts off of that one.

yeah that's true.
nothing's really beaten MS-DOS
I'm not okay with this, for the over 15 years I've used computers Windows has looked more or less the same. It might be fine to use, but it looks kind of foreign and weird.
Also full-screen Start menu strikes me as unnecessary and slow compared to the traditional menu.

Yeah fuck that Windows 8 shit they should go back to Windows 3.1's design.
Oh wait that didn't have Start menus either.

I don't know, man...
The first OS I ever used was Windows 95.
I swore at that thing up, down, left, and right, and that was before I even knew what swearing was. I didn't even know any swear words. I didn't even know I was swearing at it. Hell, at the time, I thought it was awesome.
It was only until Windows XP I realized how much I hated Windows 95.
In what way was the XP interface better than that of 7?...
7 was a god damned good OS. If I ever have to use XP it's shit.
Eh, I'm just looking through nostalgia goggles, I guess.

Yep.
Nothing beats Pokemon Blue's interface. Shit was so cash. Or whatever the fuck that phrase is.
Windows XP will always have a special place in my heart.
My plans of upgrading to Windows 8 just went out the window.
Heh.

Just because you can't see a button anymore? I think its other benefits counter-balance some png image that sat in the corner.

Up until I graduated that was what my school always used so it doesn't really have that nostalgia effect on me yet
This heresy smells of Apple.

Like what benefits exactly? Being super tablet friendly is the only thing I've heard about it.
And I continue to not give a shit, as Windows XP continues to grasp me in her warm, loving hands.

Am I the only one that can't STAND XP?
Windows 8 is the Gnome 3 of Windows.
am i the only one who really couldn't be bothered with interfaces?
To replace the start button, Microsoft will reportedly turn that space into a hot corner, sources told The Verge. Hovering your mouse or swiping your finger over that spot will bounce you back and forth between the Metro UI and the desktop in an attempt to offer a more consistent experience between the two environments.
