Like what benefits exactly? Being super tablet friendly is the only thing I've heard about it.
Probably because it's the most visual change. • System Reset: Restores your computer back to its default settings. • History Vault: Backup your important data and display backed up files and folders in a time line. You can backup locally or across the network. • Sync settings to the cloud. • Hybrid Boot: Hybrid boot differs from the traditional boot process in which the computer goes into an advanced hibernated state instead of fully off. • Windows To Go: This feature allows you to run Windows 8 from a USB storage device so you can run Windows from anywhere. • 30% less memory usage by default as of the developer preview. • Multi monitor support, multiple taskbars, spanning wallpapers, separate wallpapers • Native ISO, IMG, VHD, and VHDX mounting support. • Updating task manager which provides more information • Hyper-V support. Native virtualization (like vbox and vmware) and is better than WVPC by miles. There are others, but those are just a few highlights.

All of those features are not useful at all to me. Looks like I'll be sticking with OpenSUSE/Windows 7 dual boot.
-points-.
Most of these won't be worth the price for an upgrade and could as well just be put into an update for Windows 7.
Also MS UEFI locking on tablets = fuck off. [editline]7th February 2012[/editline] Essentially kindergarden interface for Windows 7, should have been put in SP2.
I will upgrade because I welcome the unknown (even though it's not that unknown)
It says mouse so I really don't see the issue. Oh no, now I have to move my mouse to the exact spot I used to have to move it to and hover it!
stop "hey who cares if they made it invisible for no discernible reason you can still figure it out cant you??" why? what is the point of this? it's a stupid decision that yields absolutely no benefits sorry, i like having visual feedback for whats going on in the computer. who cares if they made all the icons on my desktop invisible, i still remember where they are!!
Most of these won't be worth the price for an upgrade and could as well just be put into an update for Windows 7.
It's not like that's all there's going to be, that's just a few things they've announced. You'd probably be better of waiting for Win9 though considering how minor builds generally get favored more. Though if they do that $30 upgrade they did with Windows 7 it wouldn't be a bad idea.
Okay, so I'm going to guess that this is going to have click support. But you know, you could all just rage either way.

It's not gone, it's just transparent by default and the start menu is just full screen now. • You can still click that and get a start menu where all your programs are listed, it now shows more by default. • You can still hit the winkey and click on a program icon to open it. • You can still right click to open as admin. Ctrl+Shift+Enter still works for opening as admin. • You can still hit the winkey and start typing to search. • You can still use it as a run dialog, even though Win+R still exists. • You can still use it to open control panel, computer, etc. • You can still use it to do every single thing you could before with the old start menu and old start button. No functionality has been lost, only gained, which you don't have to use. You can use it in the same exact way you did with the old start menu, all existing functionality remains. I really hate it when articles are written like this. Implying that Microsoft has removed a feature altogether and giving no reason as to why the decision was made. By this article it'd make you think that they just decided "Hey let's tear shit out for no reason, that'll be great" when in fact it isn't even remotely the case.
Yet you dumb me anyways, cause oh right, reading articles is dumb.
Or you could, you know, click on it which is a lot faster than hovering your mouse over a specific spot and waiting for it to open.
Hovering just shows the a tiny preview of the start screen instead of that tooltip, you still click it.

So I can't possibly have ANY reason to like it myself because you dictate it "stupid"? Cool, but no thanks I'm not sure I'm going to just take your word on it. Hell, in the first place I was just wondering why the hell it mattered at all because if you read the article it didn't imply functionality had been lost but everyone was mad anyways. I know that not joining in group rage here is a no no, but what the hell.
I might buy a copy off the black market, I can't see myself paying $200 for Windows 8.

Windows 8 was not my idea
I might buy a copy off the black market, I can't see myself paying $200 for Windows 8.
do you mean you'll pirate it or you'll actually go to a bizarre in some 3rd world country and buy a dirty "black market" CD with windows 8 on it
the nation thinks this is: inspiring [editline]7th February 2012[/editline] what will i do with my windows key now oh shit guys
I thought this article was about the windows button on your keyboard, not your desktop. I guess it's not a major issue that they just make it invisible but still have all its functions, but I'll still miss it a little. Unlike the windows buttons on my keyboard, I plucked those out with a scissor.
people are mad because its fucking stupid and useless to make the start button invisible we all understand that it doesn't remove the functionality of the start bar but thank you for reminding us if you enjoy having crucial parts of your OS made invisible for no reason good for you but imo its fucking dumb
I agree is was a pointless thing to make it invisible, I hope if they get enough feedback about it though they'll re-add it, or at least something there as an indication "hey there's still something here". I wouldn't be surprised if your average computer user came to the desktop, saw it was gone, and didn't know what the hell was going on. Then again a lot of the Metro interface is like that, Microsoft says it's suppose to be "discoverable". I think they took it too far.
do you mean you'll pirate it or you'll actually go to a bizarre in some 3rd world country and buy a dirty "black market" CD with windows 8 on it
its not piracy if I buy a legit stolen copy
Oh man. I work on a call desk. I am going to get so many calls when this comes out!
... I wouldn't be surprised if your average computer user came to the desktop, saw it was gone, and didn't know what the hell was going on. I think they took it too far.
One annoying thing in the developer preview was the log off button was hidden in an invisible menu, I only found it by accident and I can't imagine how a tablet user would find it. There's a bunch wrong with Windows 8, and them making the start button invisible isn't really one of them.
Most of these won't be worth the price for an upgrade and could as well just be put into an update for Windows 7.
I see windows 8 as more of laptop/tablet update, I did get to mess around with the D.P and can easily see it as a good update for a more portable system, if it's not expensive to upgrade. But if you're mainly going to use a desktop, staying with 7 should be fine, there's not much worth in upgrading at this point in time, as 7 has a while before support drops, and has been preforming very well. It does look like 8 will definitely be worth the price, though. And windows to go sounds pretty sweet.
do you mean you'll pirate it or you'll actually go to a bizarre in some 3rd world country and buy a dirty "black market" CD with windows 8 on it
He'll buy it off a sly Baltic man, who will in turn support gang violence and child labour.
Windows 8-stupid electric garbage that i can take a dump on.
Everyone know every second os by microsoft is shitty, Just like vista, windows 8 will be shite, but when we take the stop to windows 9 or whatever comes after windows 8, we will have a new, better OS that surely will outdo the previous OS's
I'm still hope to see some new revolutionary OS, that can give me full control of system, can run every compatible binary x86-64 no matter for what OS it written, some awesome virtualization. fully customizable gui. and extremely low system specific.
Windows

good
Yeah. Windows 7 was neat, solid and refined. Windows 8 'metro' bullshit looks seriously over the top, flat out trying-to-be-cool and redefine shit as 3.0! WHOA! What we want from PCs is simplicity, performance, stability, ease-of-use for stuff like 3DSMax and running Games well, not horrible features that are forced upon you and are pretty much worthless after the first ten minutes of 'wow cool' or more likely 'wow this is shit'.
I guess we're gonna have to wait for windows 9 to get the next decent OS. XP (good) -> Vista (shit) -> Windows 7(good) -> Windows 8 (shit) See pattern?
I guess we're gonna have to wait for windows 9 to get the next decent OS. XP (good) -> Vista (shit) -> Windows 7(good) -> Windows 8 (shit) See pattern?
It's not out yet, you haven't used the final product.
Or you could, you know, click on it which is a lot faster than hovering your mouse over a specific spot and waiting for it to open.
I've noticed this as an insanely retarded trend because somebody misunderstood "the fewer clicks the better", much like "the shorter the distance between the buttons you have to use for this action the better". The former is supposed to mean you shouldn't make a ton of subcategories if fewer suffice, but instead people go all "MOAR HOVERING UP IN THIS BITCH". This is what you get if people only study the theories without questioning them I suppose. :/ I guess I can't blame Microsoft for trying something new, but almost no feature I've seen actually looks good or user-friendly.
