Microsoft to remove the start button for windows 8
It will have all the best parts of 8 and won't suck, so yeah.
That's what 7 is. All the best parts of Vista with the simplicity of XP
Gotta give credit where it's due: Current Vista isn't that bad. I'm sticking with W7, but Vista isn't anywhere near as bad as it used to be.
I read your post, Panda X, but after trying out the beta, and reading about what changes are, I must say that linux is the new in for me.
I have always liked linux, and used it almost every day, for everything I do, including playing games, and when I buy a computer when this windows 8 system is out, ill have to replace it entirely with linux.
Sorry microsoft, I really liked windows, but this is killing it. The system itself is something I have hated always, and this is not keeping me on board.

Do you play games? If so you're fucked.
Am I the only one that can't STAND XP?
I hate it
After using Vista and 7 for years it just feels so clunky and outdated, and guess what? It is.
Twenty bucks that this is overhyped, and the start button will be returned (and/or optional) in the full release of Windows 8.
I think it will work out okay, have some faith. Microsoft wouldn't make a drastic enough change to ruin the Windows experience. At least try the preview before you take sides based on some random news article.
Have you seen windows 8 or even tried it yourself? I've tried it and it doesn't feel like a windows computer. It's faaaaar to biased towards poking the screen with your finger. The buttons are massive and I don't know what the fuck is up with that 'app menu'.
It feels like I'm emulating a tablet on my computer and it isn't a windows OS to me.

I have been playing games on linux for several years.
I have been playing games on linux for several years.
Oh you're a low-end gamer I see.
Oh you're a low-end gamer I see.
Not exactly, I just know how to utilize the system. I have been a linux user for more than 5 years now.
Ah, nevermind I thought you were gonna play some new DX11 game or something.
I'm running the DP right now, and while I don't think that it's a good design move, I don't think it'll be as earth-shattering as one would expect. How often do you even bother not doing the extra ~75 pixels down to the corner? It'll make a visual difference, but in the way you use Windows, I doubt that it'll have a big effect. Besides, Windows 8 brings a lot more to the table than just a different UI. Whether you like the UI or not (in my opinion it's pretty messed up right now), there's a lot other to it.
ITT: people misunderstanding experimental software builds. Including the source of the OP.

Sorry, but this is not experimental. Beta is soon going live, and Microsoft probably won't change that much more. I'm hopeful for Windows 8, but Microsoft is known for not pulling a design completely through. Just look at Vista Aero, for example.
In what way was the XP interface better than that of 7?...
7 was a god damned good OS. If I ever have to use XP it's shit.
XP is 10x easier for troubleshooting because in 7 all the good stuff is hidden away in sidebars and hotkeys or altogether removed
I'm sticking on Windows 7 until Windows 9.
I kind of like the new square UI design. In any case, I won't be using it on my Desktop but it might be nice to have it on a tablet. If it was on a tablet could it run Steam et al? Could I plug mouse and keyboard into it?
I'm never upgrading to windows 8, it looks like proper shit.
And now they removed the start button as well? I'm keeping my 7 thank you.
Who's idea was this?
"Yeah, so we're going to add in some new features, make things a bit more user friendly, but that start button? That's gotta go."
Well, with that last part in mind, I'd say they're probably the same people responsible for YouTube's new look and the redesigned Facebook setup.
Companies pick some of the worst people when it comes to designing stuff. They make something good at first (something really easy to use and exceptionally funcational), and then they make it better a little while later. But then they always get carried away and start fucking with stuff; the good features always get cut or butchered, and tons of other worthless, shitty features are added in their place to make things really tedious for the users.
Maybe George Lucas is really behind all this?
Twenty bucks that this is overhyped, and the start button will be returned (and/or optional) in the full release of Windows 8.
20 Bucks it will be one of those options you get :v:
20 cents your both wrong and I'm right.
Probably because it's the most visual change.
• System Reset: Restores your computer back to its default settings.
• History Vault: Backup your important data and display backed up files and folders in a time line. You can backup locally or across the network.
• Sync settings to the cloud.
• Hybrid Boot: Hybrid boot differs from the traditional boot process in which the computer goes into an advanced hibernated state instead of fully off.
• Windows To Go: This feature allows you to run Windows 8 from a USB storage device so you can run Windows from anywhere.
• 30% less memory usage by default as of the developer preview.
• Multi monitor support, multiple taskbars, spanning wallpapers, separate wallpapers
• Native ISO, IMG, VHD, and VHDX mounting support.
• Updating task manager which provides more information
• Hyper-V support. Native virtualization (like vbox and vmware) and is better than WVPC by miles.
There are others, but those are just a few highlights.
Are they calling these points "innovations"?
But...How will i start my computer?
Are they calling these points "innovations"?
No, they're calling them features.
They're not apple.
lol at how many people are saying windows 8 has been completely ruined because because the start menu no longer says "start" on it.
p.s. for all you people on windows 7 look at the start menu, they've already 'ruined' it
It's not gone, it's just transparent by default and the start menu is just full screen now.
• You can still click that and get a start menu where all your programs are listed, it now shows more by default.
• You can still hit the winkey and click on a program icon to open it.
• You can still right click to open as admin. Ctrl+Shift+Enter still works for opening as admin.
• You can still hit the winkey and start typing to search.
• You can still use it as a run dialog, even though Win+R still exists.
• You can still use it to open control panel, computer, etc.
• You can still use it to do every single thing you could before with the old start menu and old start button.
No functionality has been lost, only gained, which you don't have to use. You can use it in the same exact way you did with the old start menu, all existing functionality remains.
I really hate it when articles are written like this. Implying that Microsoft has removed a feature altogether and giving no reason as to why the decision was made. By this article it'd make you think that they just decided "Hey let's tear shit out for no reason, that'll be great" when in fact it isn't even remotely the case.
so wait wait wait
If I'm reading this correctly, Metro UI is pretty much the new Start Menu?
As long as I can change the start menu back to normal I'm fine with it, I don't like the bollocks full screen metro start menu at all after using it for a while in the Developer Preview.
I guess I must be the only person in this thread who uses http://www.tordex.com/startkiller/index.html and just presses the windows key to open up the start menu. Makes my taskbar look cleaner in my opinion (with my theme at least).
It is
well shit that can't be too bad
I don't like the looks of it much but I'll have to actually give it a whirl before I pass judgement on whether I like using it.
[editline]7th February 2012[/editline]
worst case scenario I'll go grab Emerge Desktop and use it, like back in my old XP days
