Just needs to have PSone and Ps2 backwards compatibility and this will be perfect!
Like the Unremovable Singstar ad embedded into the EU PS3s that puts it on the top of your games section?
I'll admit, my amazon video shortcut on my PS3 is annoying in that it can't be removed just like Singstar, but it's only there when I got video, and it only shows anything if I actually land on it for more than a second. Not so much an ad as a function I'll never use.
Not really into F2P and MMORPGs, but this is good news. Sony keeps doing everything right.
Don't shy away from F2P just because it's F2P. The quality of them is now what you'd expect from a $50 game. And they're slowly getting away from Pay to Win, too.
I really like PS2 and Blacklight a lot so that's nice
So what they're actually doing is hosting servers for publishers if they don't provide them, thus the cost for psn?
but the ps3 has ads.
when you start up the ps3 it force feeds you subway ads when it's sponsored by a sony game and shit like that.

Hell i seen "Your the One millionth visitor" ads there.
People wait long enough for the "what's new" ads to load?
So far the only thing I dislike about PS4 is the price, pretty much anything else is neat.
Oh by the way I think you guys didn't quite understand me, I'm complaining about the € = $ silliness.
see the difference?
Sony learned with the PS3 that being an arrogant twat in press releases can only hurt you.
Remember how we'd all "work extra hours" to afford the PS3? Seems Microsoft missed this bit.
other news: World of Tanks will be behind the Xbox One's XBL paywall.
How do you think Sony managed to make their console a whole 100 dollars less than Microsoft's?
This. They're using the membership pricing to offset the cost. Microsoft didn't do that with Live subscriptions, but Sony seems to be adding that $60/yr pricing on to be able to afford the $400 price tag.
In addition to that PS Plus members will receive for free a special edition with slightly reduced functions of DriveClub.
Call me a pessimist but I have a feeling this "reduced functions" thing will happen to most if not all games given for free on PS+ from now on
I mean, with paying being obligatory for multiplayer they'd be giving free games to what, 80% of the userbase?
I'm fine with paying for PS+ since all the server additions they announced a while back. Sounds like they're doing an extreme overhaul of all their PS-related server stuff so PS+ required for online makes a lot of sense.
Call me a pessimist but I have a feeling this "reduced functions" thing will happen to most if not all games given for free on PS+ from now on
It's already happening on the PS3. Right now they have Uncharted 3 in the instant game collection, but it's only the singleplayer portion. The competitive multiplayer itself actually has a F2P model now, but it restricts you in many ways compared to the retail version. Coop is also totally missing from the PS+ version, but you can pay extra to unlock that.
have you seen the xbox in the past three years?
It is hilarious how much functionality they sacrificed in the past few years to cram as many ads as possible in.
$5/month is a pretty good deal imo.
I'll sell my 360 at a flea market and save up for a ps4.
Sony deserves a big ol' hug.
And the most console sales when PS4 hits store shelves.
I love you Sony <3
I think we have to be realistic. Servers cost a lot of money; maybe not $5 per-user per-month sort of money, but a lot of games these days have very high overheads for the online portion of their title.
It's nice to see that not all games will require our money to play multiplayer though.
They might be using the profits from PS+ to bring down the sales cost for the PS4 too.
I can see why they're doing this.
The next-gen consoles will support large MMOs and insane player counts. This means networking costs rise exponentially with the amount of players, thus they need an additional stream of money. On the PC, dedicated servers are often hosted by communities that pay for the upkeep, so you end up indirectly you're paying for multiplayer if you donate to such a community. On consoles, these kind of servers are provided by Sony and the developers.
Now with games like PlanetSide 2, the networking costs are calculated into their business model: the network infrastructure is provided by the developer, which gets money directly from its players (microtransactions etc). That's why Sony doesn't have to charge for the multiplayer of these titles.

Btw I do wonder if PS Plus is required for non-explicit multiplayer, like the player hacking in Watch_Dogs.
MMO network costs aren't actually that bad, apart from the content distribution.
Any multiplayer shooter is a lot more taxing because of the higher tick rate.
I apologize for the financial burden on our users
Wow, that's pretty err apologetic for a PR speech. Usually you'd read something dodging and confident like "Our new and improved service will be able to supply customers with the possibly best, never-seen-before" blablabla
If your taste in games isn't too picky I imagine you'd actually manage to save buttloads via PS+. As far as I know it means beta access, sales and free games across PS4, PS3 AND PS Vita.
I almost regret upgrading my PC instead of buying a PS4 + decent TV screen.
Damn, Sony, you really changed ever since that administrative overhaul.
sony crowned 'best company ever' after they announce they will 'not fund FEMA death camps due to cost'
Still screwing over "casuals"

I thought the whole point of Uncharted was the SP
I'm okay with this. The PS3 has got a nice F2P collection, so I don't expect it to be worse on PS4.
I will gladly pay $5 a month if I'm going to be getting a ton of cool new games, themes and all kinds of goodies from PSN+
Sony know how to treat their fans right, I love this.
It only makes sense since DUST 514, for example, uses CCP's own server system to hook it up to EVE Online. Which is also why it will never appear on Xbox Live since Microsoft doesn't let devs use their own servers that are independent from Live.
This makes the PS4 even better.

I find it absurd that they even dare to do that. PS3 doesn't have ads in the same way and PSN is free. Would've been alright if they did have a bit of ads since I don't pay a dime for it. If I were to pay for Live you better not shove ads in my face.
Imagine if Netflix were to throw in ads in the middle of the shows you were watching. Fuck that. Funny how Hulu actually does that.
well Sony actually listens to what the consumer wants and try's to give the consumer the needs and wants but not always are they able to give everything people want. Xbox on the other hand doesn't listen to anyone and does things there way.
I'm actually thinking of getting a PS4 now.
I've never even owned a console before.

I hope that is the reason, maybe later it will go cheaper/free
