Avatar matches your post.
It will have to be a big-ass star ship to have enough supplies for a 100 year voyage, and require more advanced technology then we have currently.

I think it means it won't be replaced for 100 years.
Obama killed NASA in 2009.
get.over.it
Hahahahahhahh
I don't think any of you realize how ridiculous this proposition is

the best robot we could put on Mars which is an eyelash away from Earth in space terms got stuck in a fucking ditch and had to be abandoned
and NASA wants to build a fucking starship? When they're not even that good at mitigating radiation? really??

No he didn't.
If i live to see this built i will totally spend everything i own on a ticket to get aboard this!
( Enterprise was definately the best name for it )
I accidentally read NASA as NASCAR.

By 2110, 2012 will have been postponed at least three or four times.
I wish I could live long enough to be the pilot of that starship.
This'll be a winner :v:
This sort of thing makes me wish I was born 50 - 100 years from now, so I could see humanity take to the stars. Unfortunately I think I'll be dead before anything significant happens.

Nasa has already released a picture of the computer on the ship...

I already finished Starship INTERGAL-T24 a year ago. NASA are late to space.
Sounds pretty cool. Too bad this is probably never going to be made due to the budget cuts NASA has been forced to make.

Quite possible, but who knows
Destiny is already doing that, NASA is dumb.
On a sidenote with the above post gaining dumb ratings.....
Sounds obviously cool, wish they could select a few willing people to go out into space. But I guessing depleting as much food and water from earth would be a bad idea, but only if earth was in a emergency breakdown.
Something bugs me about this, seeing how all the planets in our vicinity are dead planets.
How most of the planets in our galaxy are dead planets.
How most of the planets in our universe are dead planets.
Just how interested would people be to look at massive balls of dust? I imagine that a lot of people (Myself included) would be thrilled purely by the knowledge I am standing on a planet that isn't Earth, but a lot of people would probably find it boring/stupid, wanting to visit the minute fraction of planets that actually have life/interesting features on them.
You know, dumb people who don't appreciate the whole "Holy shit I'm standing on an alien world!" factor.

VASIMR Rocket.
Oh look radiation problem solved.
If they're building a fucking star ship they can build it to be massive and have a few fields inside it for food, and that helps to keep the air clean.
Rate me agree if you'd want to go settle on Mars, rate me disagree if you'd want to stay back on Earth.
Bear in mind how small Mars is...
I rated you optomistic because the sand on mars is like being sand blasted with caustic soda, and there is no magnetic field to keep you safe from the radiation.
We need to theorise ways of super fast terraforming, even just a local area at first.

level 10 nanite factory
i hope I'm alive to experience STAR TREK WOOO
We need Ion engines :science:
So, it just sucks.
I mean the propulsion system.
Hey everyone party at Gliese 581 bring your own beer
This is going to need a nuclear fuel source of some kind. Fission should be sufficient for whatever propulsion they use *CoughPlasmaThrustersCough* but they could collect fuel for fusion from the environment. Also, they'll have to power a massive magnetic shield over the ship to protect from radiation along with, well, everything.
Technology is evolving at a much higher rate then it did even 20 years ago, this is totally doable in less then 50 years.
NASA + DARPA what more could you ask for.

I can't find the article, but recently it's been found that scientists over-estimated the energy required to sustain such a protective magnetic field by several orders of magnitude.
