I love how they called it "The Enterprise"
And Starship.
This is going to need a nuclear fuel source of some kind. Fission should be sufficient for whatever propulsion they use *CoughPlasmaThrustersCough* but they could collect fuel for fusion from the environment. Also, they'll have to power a massive magnetic shield over the ship to protect from radiation along with, well, everything.
Problem with fission engines is getting that shit into orbit without any risk.
I can't find the article, but recently it's been found that scientists over-estimated the energy required to sustain such a protective magnetic field by several orders of magnitude.
Actually, the magnetic field wouldn't protect you from radiation, infact, it does the exact opposite, maybe even causing more damage than the radiation alone

Er, the harmful effects of magnets? And those would be?
I may be the first person to say this but... I want to stay on earth.

Yeah, I know the one you mean too : this is actually to do with the magnetic field trapping charged particles from the solar wind, which then create a much stronger electric field which can repel other particles.
Why are these fucks so slow? Give them the 3 TR dedicated to the military budget goddammit!
Is there a way we could use helium balloons to lift small payloads into high altitudes bit by bit?
When the balloon is high up its captured by orbiting craft, the payload is recovered, the balloon's helium is compressed (so that it is no longer lighter than air at ground level) and then dropped back to earth, recaptured and the process is repeated? Could we potentially get a lot of stuff up into orbit without the needs for rockets this way? I suppose the most challenging thing would be capturing the balloons, while orbiting at 14,000kph or whatever. Still, if it could be done, it would be a huge step forward.
Solar Wind power. It'll get weak if you're too far away from a star, but that'll take quite a while.

VASIMR rockets for christ sake, it uses plasma and that generates a massive magnetic field, easily big enough to keep a crew safe.
But we need to go beyond mars, we have the technology to inhabit just about any rock in our solar system if we try, we just need to scrap our current system of economy and start pooling our international resources, none of that "but that iron and oil is ours" bullshit.

You're so fucking stupid it's amazing.
Cosmic radiation can be effected by a magnetic field, we know this because if they didn't the earth would look distinctly different something akin to mars.
It doesn't, so magnetic fields are grand, besides they would protect the ship from the charged particles of the solar winds.
And worst comes to worst then the ship could be carefully landed on the planet and since it's most likely mars, the engine could be maintained and kept running at low power to form a localised magnetic field to protect the colonists due to mars lack of atmosphere or magnetosphere.

New worlds?

In all seriousness thats awesome. I love hearing stuff about Nasa/Darpa
Its good to see this getting done. I think it would be far better to get every nation capable involved in these kinds of projects to help speed up the process.
It makes me happy to see technology-related news articles that aren't about Twitter or Facebook.
I'd say about 40-50 years.

Most probably to be created in 100 years :/
How about you guys stop pulling dates out of your ass
I work for NASA in Greenbelt, MD at Goddard Space Center. Fuck I love my job. NASA is the shit for doing things like this.
Want proof?

Had to censor out some stuff, but you get the idea.

Man, that's fucking awesome. How long have you been working for them?
I like your hair cut. It's very.. simplistic.
Man, that's fucking awesome. How long have you been working for them?
Since March. Before that I worked for the Executive Office of the President in DC. - http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/eop
Hurry up and get the VASIMR finished, tested and rigged onto a god damn craft man!! :argh:
Since March.
Nice. What stuff do you actually do for them?

I'm a Senior Systems Engineer, so, I do IT shit. Servers, networking...etc.

Are you going to get like a free house in the newly populated mars?

That'd be kinda sweet. No beach though, so I'd be bored. I need to be close to the beach.
Dammit, I'll still never be the first human Spectre...
Also, I pray to fuck that they don't pick a shitty name for the ship.
Do you like my new avatar? :haw:
Hey, I'm not sure if it's been said anywhere else, but NASA is planning this as a one-way trip. I've seen a news coverage of the idea and other than the stuff about propulsion, they are basically saying that 1) NASA has to spend much less if they are not planning to return people any time soon and 2) it showed them asking people around and some of them would love to get a one-way ticket off-world.

All I see is a censored government ID card.
For all we know, Faze could be a mail technician and master poser.

You have 8-9 days to renew it.
This is pretty awesome news. I love space, but training as an astrophysicist has always seemed a bit mundane, endless data processing. This is something I'd like to work on if I get the opportunity.

Hey, have you seen classified documents and images from NASA yet?
Is it true that NASA is altering images of Mars and other stuff?
