ITT: People don't understand they are not going for actual gameplay but how the games themselves changed the industry and how modern games have been molded from them

And yet they add Doom 2 instead of 1. Noone says Doom 2 revolutionised FPS games, they always mention that the first Doom set it off. The first level in the game is instantly recognisable to millions of gamers. Doom 2 did nothing new except a few monsters and a new gun.

Well I'm glad Minecraft was on the list, but where was Donkey Kong Country 2?
The amount of blind hate WoW gets is hilarious. My blizzard and valve inner fanboys had a brutal deathmatch in my heart and I can honestly say that if it was one and not the other, WoW deserves to be on there over Half Life 1 or 2. Rate me boxes, I don't care. This was about the artstyle and how it "changed the industry and how modern games have been molded from them" (Great example, thanks for the quote)
WoW has over 12 million players, it can run on a toaster, its story and lore is so massive it could take 30 books to record it all, and its art style allows it to still look good after 7 years and counting (Even though blizzard has bumped up the textures in the latest expansions) There are hundreds of incredibly different environments in the entire game, from marshes, exotic forests, blasted wastelands, tundras, fjords, deserts, anything you can imagine.
Have any of you ever even played WoW? I can understand if you got to level 23 a few years ago and quit (Even though you could have tried the dozen other starting areas with a different class or race) but Blizzard has acknowledged that the starting areas were a bit dull, so they beefed them up a bit and made them more interesting free of charge since the latest expansion came out.
To this day, no MMO has ever been able to topple WoW. Hate on it if you want, but it deserves a spot in that list even though I am saddened Half Life 1 or 2 is not on there.
But while my inner blizzard and valve fanboys fight, my Eidos fanboy is crying in the corner of my heart due to the lack of Deus Ex.

Except Doom was not even in the running. So it is quite hard for Doom to win.

The same goes for half life. Half life 2 was there but it was up against portal
Where the fuck is KOTOR?
Psyconauts didn't make the cut :frown: (lost to halo 2)
Neither did Grim Fandango. :frown: (lost to Fallout)
Neither did Deus Ex! :argh:(lost to Doom II)
The category system they used really caused some important games to get left out.
Fuck yeah, Earthworm Jim.
But no Half-Life? Seriously? It basically saved the FPS genre.

Yes, but it should have been, not Doom 2.

There is a problem with bringing the public in to making the ballot, you will probably get alot of shit games and fanboyism.
I am not saying all the games on the list are the best but you can look at that list and say you know that game and you have played it or have seen someone play it before.
Where the fuck is KOTOR?
Lost to Fallout 3

Very true, but it still doesnt really fix my disappointment that the best Doom game wasnt put in, except the Doom which is kind of a slight expansion is added instead.
Why is Oblivion not on the list?
Not only was it very aesthetically pleasing and offering a big world with a lot of backstory, if I remember right its merging of FPS and RPG game was a very unique approach at the time. I think that game would be much more worthy of a spot than Fallout 3.
It lost to Mass Effect 2 in the 360 adventure category.
I'm sorry, why the fuck is Half-Life not in the list?
And despite this, another sci-fi shooter starting with "HAL" is on the list. And it's anything but a good game.
Lets all be thankful that ET didn't win.
Lost to Fallout 3
How. In KOTOR you go across different planets each unique.Fallout is green filter with copy and paste
No KOTOR, no Panzer General, no X-COM, no Civilization, no Half-Life, no Deus Ex, no Quake TF/TFCC, no C&C Games, no Smash Brothers, no Street Fighter, no Dwarf Fortress, no Need for Speed, no Mechwarriors, no Vigilante 8/Twisted Metal, no DEFCON, no Age of Empires, no the Movies, no Hitman, no Splinter Cell, no Psychonauts.
Whoever voted, MUST BE PURGED FOR HERESY!
Why Halo 2?
Something like Half Life would be more deserving considering that it started in-game story telling in first person shooting.
boy I can't wait to have a great discussion about video games as art
queue 7 pages of people complaining that their favorite game didn't make it into the exhibit
[editline]9th May 2011[/editline]
games are art, but i'll be damned if i do anything like think about them. why isn't battle raper on the list
It's not that the wrong games are on the list, it's that they chose the wrong damn games to vote for in the beginning.
Halo 2 was the first giant online console game, it DOES deserve to be on the list.
This is more of a popularity contest than a art contest
This is more of a popularity contest than a art contest
Which is bad because we already got these.
Why isn't Morrowind in there. I am disappoint.

Not only that but the art style WAS quite unique. The graphical overhaul between Halo:CE and 2 was immense. Not only that but the modelling in general was great by comparison. I mean play through Halo:CE and go through The Truth and Reconciliation and then play through High Charity in Halo 2 and you'll see what I mean.
Halo 2 is possibly my favourite Halo game (and yes, I mean in terms of single player). It took you across so many different landscapes. Earth under invasion, a Forerunner Gas Mine, Delta Halo (the weird kind of Aztec looking areas and then the quarantine zone), and finally High Charity. I have very fond memories of that game, and I remember it feeling so big and alien the first time I played through it (still feels that way).

But everything in Halo 2 was so... muddy and dark. It felt oppressive, even in the PURPLE AS FUCK High Charity and the GREEN AS FUCK outdoor levels.
Halo 2 did have a lot of glitches, and when I played through it again I noticed how sloppy the LOD's were (you could really see the models change drastically when you moved away from them). Other than that, I loved the game and it's atmosphere.

Oh, really now? So, Starsiege Tribes should be on that list considering that it's the grandfather of every single largescale multiplayer FPS that you've ever fucking played, or will ever play.

Definitely. Why the hell is TRON in that list anyway?
