"Born female" is kinda inaccurate. You're only "born" male or female in the sense of sex. In the sense of gender though, you're a genderless blob, one who can't even comprehend the idea of gender, until someone puts pink or blue clothes on you.
I'm not gonna be an asshole, but if you're just a genderless blob, what did the concept of gender grow out of in the first place? And if no one has any predisposition towards any gender, wouldn't that mean that parents could actually influence their kid to become any gender? What about sexuality?
As a disclaimer, I really don't think transgender (or LGBT) people should be treated any different from the gender they identify as, but I think I there are some problems with that assessment.
We already discussed that he's wrong
Fair enough, I guess.
I'd actually argue that by using negative, accusational phrases such as "assigned female at birth" just increases the rift between CIS and trans people.
I'm fed up of the negative reputation that 'CIS' (as much as I hate that fucking term) people have on the internet purely for being 'CIS'.
Sorry to be a bit of a grammar Nazi, but cis isn't capitalized when you're referring to it as identity. It's only capitalized when used as shorthand for Commonwealth of Independent States or Confederacy of Independent Systems.
Why are you writing cis in capital letters and scare quotes? What's wrong with the term?
Uh, because you capitalize acronyms?
"What's your name?"
"Shiloh."
"No no, I mean your real name!"
"My name is John."
"...ok, 'John'."

I literally fucking love you.
Uh, because you capitalize acronyms?
It's not an acronym though.
The terms “cis” and “trans” are from Latin, in which cis means "on this side" and trans means "on the other side" or "across".
It's latin.
seriously?
ye thats how it works dont u know life is just like an RPG
It's not an acronym though.

Oh, so it's just a backronym.
Not an acronym, went completely out of my mind when typing it. I wasn't using scare quotes, I was using the quotes because the shortened 'cis' is a colloquial term. And within certain communities there certainly is hostility towards people that are 'cis', however that isn't really related directly to the thread and wasn't intended to create an entirely new argument.
The point I was trying to make is that assigned does sound rather hostile in this context. (I know some people disagree, not trying to argue the point further, but rather explain my original post).
Uh, because you capitalize acronyms?
Just curious, what do you think it is an acronym for?
Oh, so it's just a backronym.
It's a prefix.
I don't know what's happening in this thread, but I hope John has a nice life. Seems like Brad and Angelina are rly cool about it.
Also, someone on the first page mentioned that Angelina said "she wants to be one of the boys." and commented on that. It said in the snippet that the interview where she said that was from 2010, while this is a 2014 event. They might not have been fully aware or understanding, and simply thought John was just a tomboy.
In conclusion, that is one dapper fucking child. Seriously, how do I become that stylish?

Though I would never categorize it as a "choice", I don't know to what extent a person's future gender identity can be influenced by events after their birth. It's something I'm cautious about; it's why I feel there should be at least some reinforcement of a cisgendered identity unless they resist that.

I'm just going to wait for someone else who made the same mistake to say it so I know I'm not crazy.

This is why I put this:
If (some, dickish) cis people stopped being outrageous fucknuggets
In my sentence. I don't want you to think that anybody's wrong for being cis, trans, or a bloody banana- I hate those Tumblr people who act like the issue is cis people rather than ignorance. The vast majority of bigotry comes from ignorance.
The terms 'AFAB' and 'AMAB' are used so that you use the same word for a female/ male, pre-op trans man/ woman, and a male/ female, post-op trans man/ woman. Without it, you have to rely on clunky phrases like "who was born biologically female", or things which can be misinterpreted such as just using "female" on its own when referring to the sex somebody was assigned at birth. In the case of John, both 'female' and 'assigned female at birth' are equally correct, but if they were to undergo the operation, they would be 'male', but still 'assigned female at birth'. I hope that's cleared things up somewhat.

Is it that post I've occasionally seen on Tumblr that's just an insulting backronym? Yeah, that's honestly a load of bullshit and people just make it up.
Even if we go by the idea that this is a mental illness, then the cure is to roll with it and help the person feel better with themselves so I don't see the issue.
it isn't an illness.
all fetuses start out as a female but there is a roughly 50% chance that the fetus will change into a boy, this is why men have nipples.
But sometimes this change process fucks up and the body changes but the brain doesn't or vice versa.
What is it then? Deformity? Because something obviously went wrong.
I'd call it a disconnect between one's biological sex and one's mental gender. I see my body, but I don't think it's deformed, merely that it isn't quite my self-image because it's biologically male. Things like calling it a 'mental illness' or a 'deformity' imply that trans people are somehow disabled, when in actual fact the condition can be simply and permanently treated with hormones and, often, surgery. I don't feel like there's anything wrong with me (at least not medically), I just would rather be in what society perceives as a 'female' body rather than a 'male' one.
Merry Christmas everyone.

I just think it's a dangerous road to walk down, if their gender identity and sexuality aren't set in stone after birth, someone's gonna think "Oh, so they can be treated!" and that's a terrible thing.
Cis is a latin term used in sciences. Tumblr hijacked it and started applying it to everyone who wasn't trans to fit their "us vs them" mentality. They were offended by the use of the word "trans" and wanted a counterpart word to hit back with.

The first documented usage of the term 'cisgender' in English was in 2006, one year before Tumblr was even founded. Good try, though.
Seriously, there's no hatred in the word cis unless people use it in that sense. I sincerely hope it doesn't become a slur but the vast majority of people who use the word don't mean it derogatorily- and in fact, I don't think I've ever heard of somebody being offended by the word 'trans', either. It's an abbreviation of 'transgender' in much the same way 'bi' is an abbreviation of 'bisexual'.

hmm are you sure they're the ones with an 'us vs them' mentality?
I've never seen the word used to refer to average people outside of tumblr, and half the time their usage of it is derogatory.

cis was first used in reference to gender identity/expression in 1914.
He's just saying that tumblr popularised the word - you would have almost never heard it mentioned outside of scientific circles prior tumblr.
It is pretty common for little girls to identify as boys. The reverse can also be true, but based on my experience, it isn't as common. Though I have to emphasize that it is anecdotal evidence I'm basing that theory on, not proper research.
Either way, children commonly identify as a different gender as part of their development. Maybe they will continue to identify as a boy or they may grow out of it. It is a kid, they do this.
Hahah what the fuck is wrong with people these days
In case you didn't get the hint shut the fuck up.

He stated "Tumblr hijacked it and started applying it to everyone who wasn't trans". which implies they invented it in regards to gender identity/expression.

It is applied to everyone who isn't trans, though. You're either cis or trans. Also it was used long before tumblrs existence.
