It's an absolute conflict of interest regardless of what the giving of a lump sum of money is deemed. After these rumours, Sony will most likely be able to subpoena his financial records and confirm these claims legitimacy.
If it proves to be true, we could see Sony down Microsoft's back too.
(and to the other users) Plus how could you support Microsoft in this? Their platform is hardly open, and as seen with JTAGs, they maintain a tight grip.

Because Microsoft could be seen as donating to a cause which could be considered detrimental to the financial security of the Sony Playstation.
Even a tiny loss of confidence in Sony's Playstation is a beneficial to Microsoft due to them having the competing console.
Sony could sue for negligence.
