I don't think that's a very accurate analogy because we're talking about an internet community frequented by many thousands of people. Though there is overlap, each board has its own userbase, some good, some really, really bad. I just find the imageboard format useful/entertaining for certain purposes, like asking quick questions, dumping artwork or having a good old fashioned argument without worrying about reputations and the like.
