Ive talked to a lot of guys that have been to japan for study abroad or internships and its apparently pretty common to see guys in business suits reading anime on the buses and trains

Probably because weaboo isn't a Japanese term in the first place, usually referring to someone outside of Japan. If anything, the equivalent would be a Japanese japanophile, or 'shin-nichi', but even that doesn't carry the same connotation. By and large, it's not a fair comparison. What some in the West may interpret as being visually ridiculous is not so there, and I hardly think you're in a position to claim otherwise.

It's not uncommon to see almost anyone reading some form of manga, because it's just for all intents and purposes either a graphic novel or comic book, and could be about anything from serious topics to comedy to the usual fare that's made fun of here.
