You might not be a fan of the tribal lifestyle, but that chief certainly is.
Generally speaking, the weaker group tends to be Indegiounous people who have none of the weapons that the invading group has. (eg. Indians)

Says the Australian who's ancestors destroyed the Aboriginal culture.
haha you know nothing

Of course, either because they lack the resources or they lack the ability to run into another group and be discovered in the first place. Really comes down to "Hey, we can walk all over these guys and take what they have with little to no risk! Score!".

Generally it's because Indigenous groups have never had to deal with a gigantic invading force before. Most lived peacefully interspersed with some infighting between individual tribes, but never full blown war

Then educate me. Don't make statements like that unless you can back it up.

I might be wrong but he's probably calling you out on assuming that "his ancestors" did anything
It's entirely possible he is from a family of immigrants that came later, or is even aboriginal himself
Between 20,000 and 40,000 people? Fuck. That.
40,000 people isn't very much tbh.
That's how many people died in Ferris wheel accidents in the summer of 2011.

Next you will be telling me that drunk guy didn't declare war on Ireland.
this is why i hate hispanics
Implying brazilians are descendants of Spanish people, and that Australians did not totally crush australian aboriginal culture
think before you post.

Nah, you don't even need to live in the past to assist to be complicit in the oppression of aboriginals.
Did you know only five years the Racial Discrimination Act had to be suspended so the government could enact pretty racist legislation

My understanding was that Hispanics refers to the region of Hispania, which covers Portugal
Please correct me if I'm wrong, it is on the other side of the world and all

Also I'm fairly surprised a thread about brazil has lasted so long without a
'kekeke gib land or i flod u'
comment
haha you know nothing
Oh, then teach us how your country didn't do the same shit

The more you know.

Are you high? 40,000 people is fucking shitloads!

Was pretty routine for them to kick another tribe out, not unlike wars between people in Europe really, basically trading land back and forth through fighting over a long period of time. Hardly peaceful, but not as intensely violent as a full blown land grab by a larger more powerful group like European colonists and later the US.
Then educate me. Don't make statements like that unless you can back it up.
Calling someone out on what their ancestors did has got to be one of the dumbest things out there. All that matters is what you do right now, not what your father did, not what his father did or what HIS father did. If that person is a piece of shit, then by all means, but the sins of the father should not be passed on to the son.
this shit is just sickening.

He still could be a first generation immigrant or aboriginal
But yes, I'm aware of Australia's rather racist history right up until recently
I'm sure there are better ways of generating power than a hydroelectric dam that damages the local environment and displaces up to 40,000 people. Seems like a gross violation of human rights and blatant disregard for environmental preservation. Logging alone causes huge amounts of the rain forests to be lost, I can't see how flooding 400,000 hectares is even acceptable.
Its not really fare for people from the US to state shit like this when we did it all those years ago to get us to the top.

We're still quite a racist country in terms of the general population.
The racism has left politics though, which is good.
Isn't this going to kill a countless amount of wildlife as well? Where's PETA at when they're actually needed..

PETA is too busy exploiting naked women.

Has it? If the population is racist I find it hard to believe the politicians won't reflect that

I don't remember being alive in the 1800s myself, nor do I remember advocating it, how about you?
What happened to Native American tribes in the 1800s is terrible and extremely sad, but no amount of money or apologizing can ever make it right, even more so because the victims of those crimes are long dead, you can't right a wrong that has passed into history.
Guys, the discussion sort of goes beyond just this...
I don't know much about it, i've been living under a rock in the last year but, the dam's construction has way too many ups and downs for anyone to pick a side with out a weight in it's consciousness
In one way, nobody likes living in a third world country, progress has it's costs and you guys know it, you made it to the king's chair steamrolling everyone else in the planet, Brazil wants it's chair as a big country, and it is rushing towards it fast, while hydroenergy is the backbone of the plan.
On the other way, the human loss is devastating, as you have already seen, and the dam isn't really THAT productive, if i remember it right, the thing wont even be working the whole year, only 4 months it will be working at it's maximum capacity, all the others will be below the normal capacity, thanks to the river.
It's complicated guys, i really REALLY wish you guys researched after taking a position here.
I really don't know what side to pick, it's much, MUCH different when you live in the country where these things happen and both the losses and the gains weight on your back.
Edit:
Also, i'm quite surprised this only made it to facepunch now, it has been in discussion here for plenty of months.

It's worth continuing to mention because as white people we continue to benefit from it
Are you high? 40,000 people is fucking shitloads!
Well 40,000 is the size of a reasonably sized town. There were more casualties in the first day of the battle of the Somme.

showing off that C+ in history i see
I feel like there has to be a better way.

Apart from the poor.
I feel like there has to be a better way.
Well there sort of is but, this is cheaper so yeah it's obvious everyone is going this way.
It wouldn't hurt to take down the flooded vegetation first, would prevent methane production and even benefit with wood.
But who gives a shit, flooding the thing right away is faster right?
