So what's proper procedure when an entire nation's population starves to death?
Bunker-buster, straight into the capitol of Pyong-yang. Wouldn't kill anyone except those who are the most sinister. You of course would have to know EXACTLY when they were all together though. I say give it a year more of sanctions (as long as China doesn't fuck it up) and some pirated press to the people and things will begin to break apart. [editline]27th June 2011[/editline]
The problem of "front loading" the South with more forces is that it could provoke a North Korean military response. There was a good reason why the United States did not have all of its mechanized forces stationed in West Germany during the Cold War. As an aside, the commander of the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea doesn't feel that his troops have maintained the conventional "edge".
The difference being that the Cold War was against the largest and second most well trained military in the world. North Korea is a joke of old technology and broken morale.
Our own and glorious KimJongIl right here on Facepunch?
Kim is a glorious leader what are you talking about? :geno: [sp] Hate to spoil your fun, but that guys all SATIRE you know![/sp]
The difference being that the Cold War was against the largest and second most well trained military in the world. North Korea is a joke of old technology and broken morale.
What is the level of political and ideological indoctrination in the average North Korea soldier? After all, a Korean conflict will be one fight primarily by leg infantry and not by jets and smart bombs.
Wow, Kim Jong is making everybody ill.
Edit
China dislikes America, China also dislikes North Korea. However China hates the idea of the US being right on their border if the Korean peninsula was unified, so they put up with North Korea. Which is why 50 years from now there will still be Kims, starvation and minders.
You DO realize that China has already warmed to the idea of a unified Korean peninsula under the South, correct? It was part of the larger Wikileaks release.
It's not news that they have a food problem but this is the first time(I think) someone manages to get footage of it. The country is a damn time-bomb, either there's a massive revolt or they just all starve to death, either way the country falls.
Where is that documentary where a guy goes on a tour of NK? He is basically sheltered from reality, only allowed to go where they say he can. It's really surreal. They also set out huge buffets, to make it appear that there was no food shortage.
Vice Guide to North Korea. http://www.vbs.tv/watch/the-vice-guide-to-travel/vice-guide-to-north-korea-1-of-3
I feel sorry for those orphans especially. Why can't the reporter smuggle some of them out? I'm sure with the food shortage there are some ways out of the border. Still risky though.
This could be a plot to make America invade, and then China supports North Korea.
We could use a couple of assassinations here.
If this is best Korea, I can't imagine what it's like in South Korea :v:
Since the army are also malnourished, you'd essentially be fighting the people who are being harmed. The problem isn't really the governments fault either, due to the trade embargo's on the country the people just can't get enough food.
Don't try to protect their government. Why do you think they are being embargoed? Because we just don't like them? Maybe it's because of decades of sporadic attacks and a violent policy towards almost every foreign nation.
And this is why Dictatorships don't work at all.
And this is why Dictatorships don't work at all.
They work given the right circumstances and conditions. (That is, not very many cases) But when they do they are as efficient as hell.
A few months ago South Korea dropped leaflets telling people about the Arab Spring and encouraging them to do the same and overthrow the regime. There were a few protests but the army just shot them all.
Well, that didn't go well. When you have many soldiers against many unarmed protesters, and the army has no qualms about shooting said protesters, one should consider the possibility of dropping something OTHER than leaflets. No, not bombs, I am not suggesting euthanasia. But in times when the military can't listen to reason or find the will to rise up against the demons in the fortress, it would be at least considerable to think about dropping in supply crates filled with armaments and stuff to give power to the people. The drops would need to be VERY precise, so that none of their army finds the drops, but the people can, somehow. Either that, or drop a LOT of bombs directly onto all of Kim's palaces, from VERY high up, to smoke him out. He just doesn't belong in this universe anymore. There might still be hope for his son to not follow in his father's footsteps, but Kim Jong-Il has GOT to go. But if we're planning on sparing his son, then it's best to scratch the Orbital Drop Bears.
I imagine the reason why the army doesn't stand up is because they're too scared. Imagine you're part of them, what are you going to do? Ask a few people if they want to help you and then what? You'll be dead in no time. I can also imagine the reason why this country hasn't been invaded yet is because they're way too unpredictable. What if they suddenly open fire with (nuclear) missiles to a country like Japan. What if they realize they're not going to win this and try to have as much casualties as possible.
If this is best Korea, I can't imagine what it's like in South Korea :v:
Sarcasm?
A damn shame indeed. Somewhat related to this, is a documentary called "the dying rooms", about chinese orphanages, where people give up their childs, as a part of their "1 child policy"... If we do go to war with NK, we should use Cheez-Wiz instead of guns. They'd be on our side in no time.
Spoken like a true "agent of chaos" :v:
They should use knives.
My girlfriend just left for Korea this morning
I think soon they'l probably start threatening the south again, just to try start peace talks and make a deal where they get some aid, or something.
They work given the right circumstances and conditions. (That is, not very many cases) But when they do they are as efficient as hell.
Dictatorships only work for the Leader(s) and ruling party (if any)
They're not revolting because you can't exactly undo generations worth of brainwashing. At least Nazi Germany only had one 1 decade to do it, North Korea had about 5. Not to mention, they have all their artillery stationed and aimed at Seoul, so the moment we declare war, bye bye my home capital.
Commander, our zergs are starving
I always feel uncomfortable when visitors of NK ask their guides questions they can't answer It doesn't have anything to do with brainwashing, it's just that if they tell you the truth then it's off to the gulags with them
Maybe the Americans can have a justifiable war?
Heh. You know Australians die whenever Americans decide that's a good idea right. America should just keep it's fucking hands to itself on this issue. Same with the rest of the world. This apple is rotten all the way through. [editline]28th June 2011[/editline] Let me tell you of a story: A doctor from Australia once went into NK illegally and was doing eye surgery to remove chataracts from people. Once the surgery was complete, they would fall to their knees and praise their glorious leader. despite the fact that this doctor risked his life to get there and do this surgery against that very same 'glorious leaders' wishes. [editline]28th June 2011[/editline] That's how deep the infection runs.
ABC removed the video from the source link already so here's a link with the same video reposted in the article. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/blogpost/post/north-korean-could-be-on-verge-of-famine-smuggled-video-shows/2011/06/27/AG1ReVnH_blog.html?wprss=blogpost
