that explanation was way too fucking long considering the subject
I guess my point was that anything "human" can be replicated once we leave our bodies. I actually came up with this when I was talking to my fiancee about what we would do if this gets developed in our lifetime.
I think the date is a little optimistic: the brain is totally beyond our computers to an unimaginable degree. So far we haven't even got computers as complicated as the earthworm's brain. However I'm incredibly for transhumanism and I think it's probably the best way for humanity to realise its potential.
Jesus Christ. Every cell in your body is getting replaced within a week.
Consciousness is not in the matter. Not even in the matter of the brain. Especially not in the cells.
Consciousness is not in matter.
Consciousness is not in matter, for the love of fuck: Consciousness is the result of the processing of information from one neuron to the other. It is not or in the neurons themselves: It is in the events, not in what carries them.
Even if you uploaded your consciousness to a Silicon/nanomechanical/whatever substrate, it WOULD be you. The matter would be different but the 'flow' if you want to use New Agey terms, would still be the same.
Nice to know that we have Eudoxia here to explain one of the most long-standing philosophical questions outright.
I think the human would do great when integrated into a machine. We have thrived, evolved, and built our civilizations based off technology. We will soon evolve more, and take these fragile bodies and replace them with our new ones.
The future seems brighter.
yeah i would like to have backup of my body but i dont like the idea of replacing our bodies
a light year isn't a measurement of time, and don't you forget it, damn it.
I know :3
I know its probably been said, but this is all very Ghost in the Shell.
This sounds like Footprint of God.
I think his concern is over replacing your brain. If your whole brain is removed and consciousness copied to a mechanical brain, it isn't actually you. You're thrown away, you die.
the solution here is some kind of crazy scifi nanobot that replaces individual cells of your brain one by one with metal replacements. or something
We've potentially already got the technology for this. Quantum teleportation breaks down an atom, transmits it's data across free-space using entanglement, and reassembles it at the other end.
It wouldn't be too an impossible leap of engineering to do the same thing with a human mind, breaking down the brain and storing it on a circuit board.
The question is; was it cut and paste, or copy and paste?
Okay I'm just going to come clean as I did before and say I am scared of being a fucking cyborg, I like being imperfect, imperfection I think defines the human being
Mechanics and computers aren't perfect either.

So what's next? Lets kill all animal and plant species too? Since we obviously don't need them with our glorious metal bodies.
Our brains need oxygen :downs:
I just realised the bad part of this.
NO SEX, MY GOD.
I just realised the bad part of this.

Why do you need sex if you can self-induce a pleasure much better than sex?
I just realised the bad part of this.

Yes but the fact that Republicans/luddites won't want this done to them just compensates: Imagine space, the whole of it, all the millions of light years, and not a single nutjob in sight!
Why do you need sex if you can self-induce a pleasure much better than sex?
Because they've tested it with rats.....the rats went with pleasure instead of eating to the point they starved to death.
Even if you stop aging you're still vulnerable to disease and being shot.
Computers aren't immune to physical damage either (or power outages)
3015: this technology finally reaches Newfoundland.
:frown:
to become immortal we must first make colonies on other planets
The human mind is horribly limited. If they can improve upon it, then its all good.
Limited? We don't even know how it works or what range of capabilities it even has and you call it "limited"? Wow.

It most certainly isn't infinite.
Computers aren't immune to physical damage either (or power outages)
Easier replaced and no chance of blood loss though. Plus much more resilient to damage if done right.

Oh no? Why do you honestly need sex, I just don't know why anyone is so obsessed with it, from what I've heard it's not all it's made out to be, and I can't miss what I've never had.
Any way by the time this tech comes around your penis will probably have stopped working any way.
Because they've tested it with rats.....the rats went with pleasure instead of eating to the point they starved to death.
So you're saying everyone with the intelligence of a rat will kill themselves?
And this is bad how?

Do you people not listen? These matters are not of philosophical disccusions now. Philosophers are there to talk about ideas that are external, once you can scientifically prove that consicouness is basically just electric interactions in our brain, then you've erased all mysticism from it, and we're boiled down to being organic machines. It doesn't devalue anything.

Won't know until you've had it friend. It's a lot better than it's made out to be, but it's not this amazing thing. It really depends on who you have sex with.
I can't wait till full-on transhumanism, when we can be fully robotic. No brain, no flesh, nothing human, but a chip that simulates emotion and regular brain stuff.
It has begun.

Jeez guys, I don't think Mother Nature got it all THAT wrong, she just needed a little push.
ie: Why does it always have to be metal? Biological components can be efficient too... That, and Carbon-based nanostuff is best nanostuff.
EDIT: Correction: Carbon-based nanostuff is only nanostuff.

This and that have nothing to do with each other and neither do my reasons. Technically I should have my body replaced, since I assume some would see it as affront to god.

Considering my luck so far, I'm assuming that'll never happen, plus I probably have love shyness by now from all the negative reinforcement I've had from people over he years. It's one of the reasons why I support transhumanism.

No brain means you'll be dead.
You do realize that you could just directly stimulate the pleasure center of your brain if you had the kind of control over the mind that we're talking about here. Probably better than any sex and you don't even have to get a girlfriend. Of course, there are inherent problems (People would just sit on their asses and press the orgasm button all day, like louis wu in the second ringworld book).
Where's the fun in that? How are humans gonna have any offspring aswell that way? Thats like masturbating.
Aka, 95% of Facepunch lives in 2045.

Artificial insemination? Artificial wombs?
It's pretty obvious why Facepunch wants this. Most everyone is a HL2 fanboy, and they want to be Combine IRL.

I don't know if I should see you as a troll or as being right...
I really don't...
What is for sure is that Facepunch saw in science fiction as "what will really happen", minus aliens blasting us to pieces. What Facepunch saw of good and bad ass, Facepunch thinks it will be that way.
Not to say it wont, but I don't see anyone in the next 50 years being a fully functioning cyborg or anything near that.
