but i feel like when we become too much machine we lose something that makes humans great. for example, emotions, creativity, and spirituality / religion. i think there is such a thing as being too smart. ignorance is bliss.
of course i dont actually know if we would lose those things but i suspect that we would lose some part of them.
We aren't talking of the destruction of the human mind or creativity for that matter. More in terms of opening up for being able to use some parts of the brain which is dormant while other is active. For example, being able to lucid dream all the time, like Inception stuff, but without needing to sleep, as you would be able to just activate it when you want to.
Besides, if we don't do something with the brain while the rest of the body is mechanic, then we will still die at 100 years, since brain cells die off.
I think somewhere in Ghost in the Shell it stated that it's possible for people with the upgrades to live for infinity, as long as they get maintenence.
I think his concern is over replacing your brain. If your whole brain is removed and consciousness copied to a mechanical brain, it isn't actually you. You're thrown away, you die.
the solution here is some kind of crazy scifi nanobot that replaces individual cells of your brain one by one with metal replacements. or something
All of the cells in your body are replaced one by one over time anyway. They die and are replaced. So why not just replace them with better cells the next time around?
And then the luddites get buttmad about how they are being left behind and how the world is too fast and waa waaaaa stop the world I want to get off, etc etc. You know the drill.
Soon those fucktards will go from outlawing genetic engineering to burning nanotech labs or some shit. Fucking luddites.
People need to stop under-estimating how powerful the human brain is. The amount of power that clump of flesh in your head has is nearly inconceivable to our conscious self. It's just the way we consciously use it that makes it seem so limited.
The brain is fucking light years ahead of computers, and don't you forget it, damn it.
Already addressed.
Suggestion: Perhaps you should more thoroughly read the article you are mocking, before you decide to mock it and demonstrate to us all just how limited the fleshy pink computer you call a brain actually is, meatbag.
What you fail to understand, even if you're joking, is that our generation will help make this happen.
Sure, not all of us will be working directly on it, but even the people who did badly in school and ended up at a macdonald's will end up contributing by providing relaxation and sustenance to the people directly responsible for this.
Thus; Our generation's education is vital, both to realize this and to make sure that if AI develops, it's not hostile towards us.
okay yes, of course thats true. but in 2045 im still going to be pissed that i had to work so hard to learn while the current generation just goes to their computer, plug something into their head, and they know everything in the universe.

Pft. What are they compared to the magnificence of the Omnissiah? Their petty slings and arrows would as much affect the world of technology as a stone hurled by a wayword orangutan would affect the Golden Gate Bridge.

Well if you want you can reserve the right to be really grumpy about it when you're a god.
You'll be known as Lester the Powerful(and a real bitch at parties).
I would replace my entire body with metal, get all sorts of implants stuck into my brain, hell, upload my brain to a computer.
Because that would be fucking awesome.
Also does this mean I get to shoot lightning bolts?

Jesus Christ. Every cell in your body is getting replaced within a week.
Consciousness is not in the matter. Not even in the matter of the brain. Especially not in the cells.
Consciousness is not in matter.
Consciousness is not in matter, for the love of fuck: Consciousness is the result of the processing of information from one neuron to the other. It is not or in the neurons themselves: It is in the events, not in what carries them.
Even if you uploaded your consciousness to a Silicon/nanomechanical/whatever substrate, it WOULD be you. The matter would be different but the 'flow' if you want to use New Agey terms, would still be the same.

You could do the same.
And why would you be pissed? You helped make that true, if anything you should feel pride that you've personally helped humanity reach a higher plain of existence, or the next step in our evolution, depending on what your views are.

I'm an artist, I guess I could help design that virtual environment from the Animatrix that makes robots like us.

I thought that the time table was around every two years or so, but it really doesn't matter.
oh, it's Kurtzweil again. Moving on.
I love the idea of transhumanism, but I don't think it's happening within the next 40 years.

You aren't a computer yet. Your e-peen might just explode if you stroke it anymore.

I wish I could play along with your Warhammer references because I can tell they're good
But I don't know anything about it
machines have less problems than people
We are molecular machines, I don't see the problem in becoming another type of machine.
I think the problem is that people look at consciousness as a ghost that must be sustained, lest the person you are be banished to oblivion while an exact copy takes your place.
Call me superstitious, but I sort of see things this way. I'll take a gradual change over some sort of "scanning" process, if only to calm my luddite nerves.

Can you give any reason why you think it wont happen? Because that's such a vague statement that it could very well stem from ignorance.

If only the artist for that wasn't some kind of creepy sex pervert. Eh, it works well enough for the subject I suppose.
I guess I just don't get why the military officer wears a revealing leotard all the time.
[editline]18th February 2011[/editline]
Apparantly the best argument against the technological singularity is acting confused and irritated. Well, it works well enough for creationists.
So, I am called Singularitarian now, hmm? It's pretty interesting that I got to pretty much exactly this idea in past, while I am reading about it for first time.
It's going to happen. And I want to be here to see it.

Most people who've thought about computing in regards to the future have come to a conclusion similar to this, because it makes the most sense given our current course.

What? I'm in computer science, so I think about computing all the time and I'm not this naive.
[editline]18th February 2011[/editline]
How does AI make sense given the current course of computing?

Then again, I hope that they put our precious artificial brains into faraday cages, because I don't want an errant solar flare wiping out my existence. Which is something that doesn't really bother me at the moment.

Not necessarily AI, though exponential growth leading to an overhaul of our society and culture, and in turn, our species, is pretty much a given.
What about a Singularity without AI?
I mean, just regular posthumans.

Yeah, that's what I guessed is true. I just find it surprising and sorta pleasant to find out I am not alone with these thoughts.
