wait what the fuck? 2048 x 1536? thats fucking huge how can you even consider that as a tablet? its a fucking monitor
The resolution isn't as big. The actual resolution will probably be 1024x768 but each point is made out of multiple pixels. Giving a bit more clarity.

True that, "retina display" is just a fancy term that means nothing. Just like "next-gen"
Not exactly. But it's not just apple that uses the tech.
Might as well carry a more capable Windows 7 laptop with i7 if you're going to be lugging around one that size.
I can run 3D Studio Max with my laptop as well as Photoshop. I can actually perform work on it OMGosh

Resolution = pixels. You can't have a resolution of 2x2 and only have 2 pixels. If you have more "points", you have more pixels, thus the resolution can't be "1024x768 with more pixels".

He's not referring to one like mine, which only cost $500. He's referring to nice ones that the average person would look at and go "Oooh, that's a nice car".
That's totally opinion based. Around where I live what we consider a nice car is a total junk to people say in US or UK.
I might buy one to use it as a second monitor with MaxiVista. For $500 it'll be the cheapest way to get a high res IPS screen.

You have no idea what you're talking about.
Why do we still care about Apple when you can have the same things for half the price off of any other brand?

Because appstore & iOs

i can't use anything other than apple, i'm creative
The article's not right, though. The Transformer Prime has got a 1080p display, and as such it would be able to play "full HD" content or whatever. While the PPI is insane, the aspect ratio is off, in my opinion. 4:3 is just not a good aspect ratio, and they probably only kept it as such because of the iPhone apps.
What do people do on their tablets? I only see them web browse :v:

Quality apps.
That's all what kept me waiting for the iPad 3 instead of buying a ASUS Transformer Prime.

That and shit like Angry Birds.

Uh no. The original prime was 1280x800. The yet to be released TF700T is 1920x1200. Also they didn't keep 4:3 because of iPhone apps, the iPhone is 3:2. They just put 4x the pixels in the screen so developers could scale apps easily before modifying them to have higher resolution assets. 4:3 isn't a bad aspect ratio, it can actually be argued it feels better when used in portrait mode for doing things like reading websites and ebooks because it's not as extreme of a ratio between height and width. That's why you always see Android tablets in stores set up in landscape view and iPads in portrait.

You'd love my truck then :v:
A nice car is one that looks like it's been well maintained, runs fine, has good paint on it, interior is still in good shape, most if not all of the creature comforts still work, basically doesn't look and run like a wreck. That's pretty fucking universal.

2048x1536 lets you letterbox 1080p widescreen content, and that means you don't have to hide the HUD while watching a fullscreen HD movie. You'll be able to keep an eye on the battery level better.
I will say that it's a bit odd that they went with it, I'm only using 4:3 because I rescued a friggin' nice CRT from the school dumpster a few years ago, but when you think about it, it sort of makes sense for a mobile device. Being able to mind the battery is a good thing, and you can't do that on a widescreen display with a movie fullscreened without obscuring the movie with the HUD.

You're probably right about the prime, haven't checked in a long time. Most sites I've seen looks (or at least, fits) better in 16:9 portrait, though, and I don't think you'll argue about landscape.
Anything with HURR DURR (HD) in the name I tend to avoid unless it is a monitor or a TV but even then I treat it with skepticism since it is a marketing term and so can be used to describe pretty much any quality images.

I'd need a pretty good reason to watch anything in letterbox, and watching a little icon isn't by any means.
This is just ridiculous. For a tablet, the old resolution was perfectly fine. Neither does a phone need a "retina display", 260dpi is perfect.

What he probably means is that you won't have more screen space, the device will simply render everything at the same physical size but a higher amount of detail (=higher-resolution fonts, images etc.), like the newer iPhones do compared to the old 480x320 ones.

Nah, the old resolution was an eyesore.
This new iPad won't cost any more money than the iPad 2, so I don't know what it is behind the mentality that it's 'not necessary.' It will be .7mm thicker than an iPad 2. That's it. And thicker because of bigger batteries as well as the addition of an extra light bar (2 instead of 1 because of the pixel density).
This is a nice move. I'm not sure why complaining would come up at all given that it'll be sold for the same price. A quad-core processor, a resolution that surpasses most desktops, and (probably) the same 10 hour battery life is worth 499 in my opinion.

Not having the device hud in the way of the movie is a good enough reason for me.

The HUD that disappears after a few seconds? Really, I don't see why anyone would sacrifice full screen rir that.

Wouldn't have to fade the hud out at all.

Yeah, complaining about the display (other than the aspect ratio) is just I. The old resolution was pretty bad, though. The OS on the other hand..
I wonder if it's as ugly as all the other Apple products
or you could just get the transformer prime "redo" that has a 1920x1080 screen
i mean you wont even notice the difference between 1080p and 1500p
One thing..
$$$
I have some experience with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Motorola Xoom, both of which have a 16:9 aspect ratio, as well as obviously an iPad 2.
I kind of like the iPad 2's aspect ratio better. There's just something slightly goofy about holding a 16:9 display in portrait mode. The keyboard in this orientation is nice though. But if you go landscape, the keyboard becomes too spaced out for many people with smaller hands.
I suppose it depends on what you want to do with the tablet. There is no such thing as x aspect ratio is better than y aspect ratio. If you're big on putting movies on your tablet and watching them, maybe 16:9 is more suitable for you. Otherwise I've never had any complaints about the iPad's aspect ratio, but I do appreciate its usability in all orientations. The thing is, with a 16:9 screen, the center of gravity in portrait is kind of uncomfortable. It makes more sense in landscape but then again the keyboard becomes too spaced out. But that's just my opinion.
I'm on my transformer prime now. A resolution that big on a tablet is not needed because you are never going to get that close to the screen to really care about it. I sold my iPad 2 for this and I'm never going back to apple.
Surley that resolution is just a waste of rendering power and battery?
I've gotten over their marketing ploys now and I realise how stupid they are.
