• Disney’s Princess Jasmine gets a modest makeover
This was her palace outfit though, all it signifies is Disney's artistic license/choice to not be bound by local history or culture, just like they did with Hercules and arguably Pocahontas. I disagree with changing the outfit though. This is the iconic portrayal of the character, it's wrong to update it.
I always thought the point of the outfit's design was to emphasize her being fairly progressive compared to her father and most of the city that surrounds her. The average commoners wear more traditional garbs and the majority of the women you see in the cartoon even wear a headscarf of some sort. The only other women in the film that wear a mildly similar outfit as Jasmine are dancers, and artists such as these are usually less in conformity with society so there's definitely a parallel in my opinion. Because it's a children's cartoon doesn't mean the people who design them aren't thorough in the decisions.
what's the point of dressing up as jasmine if you aren't actually dressing up as jasmine
$$$
So this is the world we live in now. A few cunts complain about something that has been PERFECTLY FINE and not harmed anyone for years, so they change it just to please the whiners. I've never known anyone to moan about Jasmine, my little sister was a disney addict when she was younger and still kinda is, but seeing a bit of belly hasn't corrupted her or anything, geez. I'm sick of the way things have gone in recent years, people should suck it up rather than crying to change everything just because they don't like it. So many media companies and design choices are now having their hands forced, backlash because of unforeseen ~sexism~ or whatever, which definitely wont have been intended but the idiots kick off at them like they are hitler or something anyway because they have nothing better to do spend their pitiful lives just waiting to get offended by something. You know what normal people do if they don't like something? They don't watch or partake in it. Simple. So, in designs now, everyone is having to be so careful about everything because they MIGHT trigger someone, its disgusting. Like this in particular doesn't bother me, it irks me a bit sure, but its the premise it sets along with all the other things like this that you see happening. All it does is encourage this behavior and tell people if they become a vocal minority, they can demand whatever they want. I'm just sick of companies having the breaking strength of wet paper about these things because they are literally scared of the triggered freaks.
I've never seen Jasmine as being a sex object. I've always just thought that she was dressed how a middle eastern princess would dress. What's next, their gonna make Ariel wear a sweater and khaki pants?
where would the actress be wearing this outfit? that old one doesn't look florida/california summer friendly. little kids hugging her might get themselves in a sweaty situation

It's not a bad change, honestly, and to feature the animated version in the same attire in future media is fine. I just hope they dont feel obligated to change the film versions and rerelease it or something. Waiting to see how they'll change Ariel to show less.
where would the actress be wearing this outfit? that old one doesn't look florida/california summer friendly. little kids hugging her might get themselves in a sweaty situation
If you don't think that light flowing dress looks friendly on the actress you must have never seen the costumes they wear in the parks...that dress is probably better than most because of the air flow.
I think they might have done the change because the actors are for young kids and not adults. They should've at least kept the curly shoes. The bastards.
wow belly buttons so lewd
People only have a problem with this because it involves arab culture/Islam. Even from just a uniformity standpoint it makes sense to have her in a full dress since all the other Disney princesses are. Not to mention what is essentially a belly dancing outfit is not a good representation of an Arab princess, or even just a princess in general, in any time period. The people against this need to get real seriously.
Don't be stupid. People have an issue with this because she no longer looks like the character she is is supposed to be. Also how is it not a "good representation"? It isn't supposed to be realistic. Why are you getting mad over realism in a cartoon? I would get mad no matter the culture. It's a pointless change. The fact that "all the other princess are" in similar dress means that she wont stand out and look generic.
which is totally understandable, especially taking young body-conscious girls into consideration.
What???? It's not like the old jasmine at any of the parks I've seen was a size zero or anything. Heaven forbid that children see what a healthy body looks like in case they feel unhealthy.

Jasmine's gone, slave Leia's gone. Next it'll be Ariel, no doubt. I wonder if we'll see a tight or belly this decade.
Disney is for children, why does this matter so much? Never understood the weird obsession people have with Disney frankly
Never understood the weird obsession people have with Disney frankly
It's probably due to people being children at some point in their life.
3rd wave "feminists" are for whatever they can be outraged at and by for maximum attention, and generally speaking not for anything that requires diligence, intelligence or continual and ongoing evaluation, and most especially taking personal responsibility for seeing if things like reality and laws of physics actually match their opinions consistently. You're thinking of 2nd wave feminism which only old people from the 90s use as a cultural benchmark. As for the outfit itself, you wouldn't find either one of them on a "traditional" princess, so that's actually kind of an non-issue.
Slightly late to the draw here, but those definitions are off. The mainstream success of second-wave feminism ended because of debates around sexual liberation - some feminists supported it and some didn't. Third-wave feminism emerged primarily from that dispute and because second-wave was characterised by a singular experience of womanhood, not accounting for differences in culture and sexuality. Third-wave isn't entirely this pesky outrageous SJW nonsense, and there are still pros (and cons) to second-wave ideals. So in terms of judging Jasmine's original outfit you'd hear arguments both defending and opposing it from both waves, but the side that defends it is what lead to third-wave feminism in the first place.
USA still on that "Fat are not unhealthy" trend uh? Unbelievable. I can get their decisions in the US considering the severe case of childhood obesity in the US, so they don't feel like they are ugly or not appreciable. I blame that on the parents that don't know how to control his children food. But then again, i feel like it's just censoring the real look of jasmine to pander to those people. Dumb, indeed, but even more now that it's leaking to real life.
Looks like Elsa now. Couldnt they atleast have kept the pants, the belt and shoes? If youre gonna change her so far that she wont be recognized as her by most kids, is there a point in keeping her in the 'lineup'?
If Jasmine had been portrayed more accurately she would be in a Burka and whipped for showing so much skin with a man around her at all times making sure she doesn't do anything haram.
maybe we should whip you, son
help me obi wan kenobi, you're my only hope
I couldn't help but have a nice laugh over this.
Booooo, she looked nicer showing her shoulders and stomach.
