Nvidia better do something similar.
God damn amd is trying to fuck valve up.
Noo don't turn to the dark side.
Didn't Intel do something like pay retailers to delay the release of AMD stuff?
If anyone should be the dark side it's Intel.
I think Intel/Nvidia for the new computer might be better now.
Reasoning? I've got two PCs. Intel + ATi in one, and AMD + nVidia in the other.
To be honest there isn't really any difference. The only difference really is that AMD stock heatsinks are way better than Intel ones simply because the pushpins on the Intel heatsinks are the spawn of the devil.
Of course price and performance difference is there, but it's not something so significant that would make me choose one brand over another.

I don't care what they do to their rivals as long as they create good cpus.

Which makes you perfect manipulable person who can later enjoy his favorite company having monopoly and not having anything to keep them from juicing the SHIT out of you.

[release]ATI Catalyst 10.9 Video Card Drivers Coming This Afternoon
I just got word that ATI CATALYST 10.9 video card drivers will be released in a few hours! Those of you that play The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena will be happy to hear that you will get a performance boost and that the mesh corruption is no longer visible when SSAO in-game setting is set to high. ATI also improved performance numbers in the STALKER: Call of Pripyat benchmark, so be sure to keep an eye out for these drivers when the go public here in a bit. The driver also updates the application profiles for Aliens Vs. Predator, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, F1 2010 and Kane & Lynch 2. We will be posting a link to the drivers once they go public! Here is a sneak peak at part of the release notes and you can see all key release notes in the forums by following the link below. ATI has been on the ball with drivers and fixes lately and CATALYST 10.9 drivers coming this early in the month is a bit of a shock, a good one though! This will also be the very first ATI Catalyst driver update that will be available via Steam! [/release]
Ah sweet!

What do you offer me to do? Stop buying their good cpus because they did something to their rival?
This doesnt mean that you get better performance in valve games.
Just sayin'
Cool.
yay now i don't have to worry if my driver is updated
I didn't even know the 10.8 drivers were out.
I'll update when 10.9 comes out.
Too bad the articles are american, so I have no fucking idea what time "afternoon" is in my timezone. It's debatable since the definition of afternoon varies.
It's like Steam is becoming the package manager that Microsoft should've had years ago. Nice but scary.
Package managers can go to hell. Drivers are issued on Windows Update, but it's only WHQL ones, which can be somewhat outdated.
i wish they had support for my 3dx voodoo :(

I can't find any working MiniGL drivers so I could play Quake, sucks :/
Very cool, nice initiative on AMD's part

EDIT:
YAY 511 post
Oh no, Nvidia fanboys going apeshit that they don't have this service, and have to resort to getting the drivers off the website.

The darkside is nvidia. Remember the 8800 and its marketing scheme?
This is AMD's way of gaining favorable market share again. Offer an interesting service to its customers, and hopefully they will come.
NVidia does little for its consumer base. except offer awesome cards for a shit price (except the 460).
And this makes that a bad choice how? All this will do is make it so people who don't know how to update there drivers, help them update them.
No, this is an convience update. I know how to update my drivers, I rather have a service provide me the download and do all of that for me. Saves a lot of time.
Most games are supported by Nvidia and that's why you often see the Nvidia logo, but for some reason Nvidia didn't go for Half life 2 way back and instead AMD decided to support them and that's ended up with this.
If you check your half life 2 DVD-ROM you will see the ATI logo printed on it's label.
Valve I want to hug you.
Valve cooperate with companies that aren't being dicks. That's why they went from Microsoft to Sony in the console field. Sony was willing to allow free updates stuff like that, most likely even help with development.
Wow, been trying to spread generically the same info around.
Some butthurters dont want to hear it because Xbox is going to fall behind in the VALVe area.
Well it certainly is a good thing for the millions of computer-stupid people who probably still have years old drivers installed.
Now the big question here is, how smooth can they make the whole experience? You usually have to reboot your computer when installing graphics drivers, if you'll still have to do it even when updating from Steam, it won't be much of an improvement in terms of convenience.
And after the update comes in, they should definitely have every ATI user get a pop-up window asking them if they want to turn on automatic driver updates, otherwise not many people will know about this feature (i assume it won't be enabled by default, some people probably wouldn't like that).
as long as it doesn't auto update drivers then I'm fine with it
without my permission ofcourse
And, of course, nVidia will join them shortly, by reason of 7 of the 10 most popular cards being nVidia ones.

Who uses the stock cooling?
All people that i know buy a different cooler for their CPU (if they build their own PC that is).

I don't buy custom coolers, and I build all my desktops. The stock ones are fine as long as you have a good fan, and watercooling is just a bit out of my budget.
I use stock cooling on my GPU.
Not on my CPU though, that thing's a damn beast, for the first two weeks I had it, I was afraid it's going to rip the CPU off the motherboard.
Damn it AMD and Valve, stop teasing us, I want a Steam update and driver updates.
As long as there are performance increases I am perfectly ok with this.
Will this fix my annoying "Failed to create D3D device" error? I've tried pretty much everything, but no Source games(except TF2, Portal and L4D2) work. Nor do I want to play my game with DX8.
I have stock CPU cooler on my Core 2, and yes the plastic clips are fucking evil, broke the one on my old Pentium 4 and on this Core 2 I had ordered a new mobo and a HD5770 and while pressing hard to get the fucking clip in my hand slipped and I sliced the skin open and nearly broke off a capacitor.
