The title made me laugh, that's just really fucked up. I never heard of police blowing up cars before.
I can't be the only person thinking that this is slightly justified, maybe not using explosives to open it but thinking its suspicious and all. I mean that note is what made it sound really dodgy to me. Its basically "please don't mind me!!!". [editline]14th June 2012[/editline] Yeah because its not like London has ever been subject to car bombings is it. [editline]14th June 2012[/editline] Uh the AA has hundreds (thousands?) of patrols all around the country. One of their selling points is extremely quick response times. I find it hard to believe that in central London that they would not be with you within 30 minutes. Also suggestion for people thinking its an overreaction, search "Storey's Gate" on Google maps and see what's around that area.
A small explosion is the easiest safe way to open a lock from a distance though.
What did the guy expect? That'd be like me parking my car in front of the White House or something in a spot it shouldn't be and leaving it there for hours. It's suspicious, no matter who owns the car.
So what? They can't look up the plates and find out who owns it, call them up? And you realize he didn't park it, it broke down at that intersection?
Yes let's waste time trying to find out who the car belongs to while the fucking car could explode.
A small explosion is the easiest safe way to open a lock from a distance though.
Good point, the only other option I can think of (a robot) would be slow and probably not available to the police as quickly as they would need it.
Maybe the repairman was far away or something I don't know Either way the police really overreacted in this situation
I really don't understand why you're trying to justify his actions. He's being pretty arrogant himself, accusing the police of being unprofessional when he just left his car in a sensitive area with a vague note and fucked off for a few hours.

Such as when the AA actually showed up, if he stayed for awhile before he left or just got out and started sightseeing when it died, etc. [editline]14th June 2012[/editline] I mean I will admit I said some stupid shit but the article is still leaving out some key details
I mean I will admit I said some stupid shit but the article is still leaving out some key details
It just wouldn't be journalism then, now would it?
It's easy to say that the police overreacted or were being paranoid - but what if it had been a bomb and the police had just dismissed it? When it comes to security, people want it both ways. You might scoff, but people get into an uproar when effective security measures aren't in place/enforced in the event of an attack, but complain when they are in the absence of one.
He should still be compensated for everything that was destroyed. It was suspicious but he was never actually did anything that warranted this.
He should still be compensated for everything that was destroyed. It was suspicious but he was never actually did anything that warranted this.
You might say "leaving a car abandoned in the middle of the road" warranted it. But since he wasn't planning on being a terrorist with it, compensation is needed here.
You might say "leaving a car abandoned in the middle of the road" warranted it. let's stomp terrorism by creating an atmosphere of terror
So London police aren't allowed to carry guns, but they are allowed to use "controlled explosions" to search cars without a warrant? Am I missing something here?
they don't need a warrant to search you or a car "Reasonable suspicion" is all it takes. lol.
You might say "leaving a car abandoned in the middle of the road" warranted it. But since he wasn't planning on being a terrorist with it, compensation is needed here.
That's pretty much what I meant. His car shouldn't have been there, and they did what they did to ensure it was safe. But since it wasn't a bomb, he should be compensated. Not fined.
So London police aren't allowed to carry guns, but they are allowed to use "controlled explosions" to search cars without a warrant? Am I missing something here?
Yes you are. It probably wasn't a regular policeman (or woman) that usually patrol the streets, and don't carry a gun, who used a controlled explosion to open the boot of the car. It was a bomb squad or a more specialized part of the police force. Not all police officers are unarmed you know, just the majority that patrol the streets regularly. The rest are called into action if/when needed.
"BOMB BOMB BOMB BOMB!! Check EVERY vehicle! They might have BOMBS! THINK OF THE CIVILIANS!" Fuck, all they had to do was bring in a bomb sniffer dog if they are that scared. The police don't need to go around and check every illegally parked vehicle. Call a fucking tow truck like you are supposed to and have it towed away.
It was left abandoned in the middle of the night half a mile from the houses of parliament, across the road from Westminster abbey and about half a mile from Downing street. Its not just a case of illegally parking a car, he left it abandoned in a high risk area, with a note that made it look even more suspicious.
The met are a joke of a police force anyway. Frankly this doesn't surprise me.
And thus endanger themselves and other people? Generally speaking if something is suspect you handle it as if it was a real thing. This thing is entirely his fault. He should have stayed around until a towing service or repairment arrived.
Thank you for approving the terrorist detention act, you will now be placed under indefinite detention without trial, have a nice day! You realize that's not how society works, right?
They should just apologize and pay for the repairs, shit happens and it seems like both sides are in the wrong tbh
