Anders Behring Breivik gets his own prison psych ward; will have friends over to play chess and hock
That's Norway's prison system, one which has clear results.
They're treating him better than a majority of Norway's other prison inmates though, and that's the wrong part. He can be rehabilitated the same way the rest of the population is, he doesn't need all of these commodities.
Why are they hiring friends for him to play chess with? Just let him play computer chess with an AI.
The thing is that he has made multiple references to never actually wanting to kill, but instead feeling like it was his "only option", in reference to how his country was going.
People say many things. This doesn't change the fact he killed 77 people. He probably said the shit to try and appear insane. Fuck him he's human waste and your defending his mental state. His mental state no matter how you try to reason it is incompatible with society, and it's best considering what he did to have him executed.
Going from this, it seems that he was more the porduct of his enviornment and somehow we allowed him to get worse and worse.
Are you serious.

Gee, I wonder why they're doing all of this? Maybe it's because he's, oh I don't know, a special case?

Jesus Christ how do you wake up in the morning and not punch yourself?
People here see him put in one extreme (luxury) and so call out for the opposite extreme (death penalty).
Is all anyone on FP here see is in black and white?
I'm with you on this one. Thing is, I just can't think of a proper punishment for this kind of monster.

He specifically made clear that he did NOT wish to be found insane.

The best I can see is giving him the equal treatment as other murderers in Norway.

Hey, at least it's not a liberal circlejerk.
Oh, wait.
At least he will be in prison. I mean, would hurting him really solve anything?
Let him have his friends there, let him have fun. But don't let him hurt anymore people.

Yeah but he could have said it to make people think he's insane, since the more you deny something the more people believe it.
Jesus Christ how do you wake up in the morning and not punch yourself?
It's easy, I get out of bed.
Do you have a lot of shit in front of your bed or something?
Yeah but he could have said it to make people think he's insane, since the more you deny something the more people believe it.
I seriously doubt he's dumb enough to try petty reverse-psychology just to be found insane. If he actually were insane, I don't think he would have to prove it given the number of people killed.
Remember, they had a hard time saying he wasn't. If he really wanted insanity, he would have had it in a heartbeat.

Yeah, its best for a system that doesn't suck. Still feels weird.
He specifically made clear that he did NOT wish to be found insane.
He said he also wished to not kill those people. No matter what he said, the kinda appropriate punishment took hold. He doesn't deserve a new wing for him alone, and he doesn't need tax payer funded friends.
As extremely satisfying as it would have been to just gut the man and hang him by the balls on the public place, the Norwegian government still decided to be bigger than that and gave him the same judgement as any other criminal regardless of his reputation.
That part is the respectable part.
What I otherwise don't get is why they decided to build a damn psych ward just for the guy. There's treating criminals like human beings and then there's treating criminals a tad too good considered what some of them have done. I think this is getting into the second category.
It's people like you that make me hate liberal pussies.
I say give him the chair!
It's people like you that make me hate liberal pussies.

Yeah, let's just forget rationality when handing out punishments for criminals.
liberal pussies.
You say that as if it were a bad thing.

He gave up his right to normal human rights. You think that guy has any guilt or other human emotion inside of him? He is a fucking machine.
I thought the purpose of prison was to punish criminals, not reward them.
:downs:

The death penalty is one of the few things where I think slippery slope applies. Don't let the government execute people.

You act as if he chose to do it, when in a sense he didn't. He was in a situation where, to him, it seemed like the only option. I wouldn't feel right in punishing someone who did what they did because of their enviornment.
The death penalty is one of the few things where I think slippery slope applies. Don't let the government execute people.
How is it a slippery slope? Killing murderers doesn't mean the government will start killing dissenters.

What the fuck? So do you feel bad for other mass murderers like Jared Loughner, or Hitler?
Yeah, let's just forget rationality when handing out punishments for criminals.
I don't believe in the death penalty either, but if you deal drugs you get several years in prison, murder 77 people and you get your own bachelor pad?
WTF??
You act as if he chose to do it, when in a sense he didn't. He was in a situation where, to him, it seemed like the only option. I wouldn't feel right in punishing someone who did what they did because of their enviornment.
Environment can create evil, indeed. But if you're so much of a fucking idiot and waste of oxygen that you consider murdering 77 innocent people because it was the only thing you were compelled to do after a year of nerding the fuck out in World of Warcraft, you should be dead. Honestly, why are you defending someone who did this to themselves? He produced the environment for himself and lead himself to murder.
What the fuck? So do you feel bad for other mass murderers like Jared Loughner, or Hitler?
I don't know much about Jared, but:
1. I generally take the functionalist view towards the Holocaust.
2. Hitler too was the product of his enviornment.
He produced the environment for himself and lead himself to murder.
Did type that out with your fingers, or your head? I think head.
No one can create their own enviornment, and if you think that's how it works you need to re-evaluate your way of thinking.

I agree it's dumb but it's far from "he killed people, that bloody monster let's butcher him!"

Are you on drugs?
How is it a slippery slope? Killing murderers doesn't mean the government will start killing dissenters.
Didn't mean dissenters. I mean that justice tends to fuck up. And state executions don't seem odd to you?
I thought the purpose of prison was to punish criminals, not reward them.

"Rehabilitation"
Environment can create evil, indeed. I agree with this. His environment was a result of whatever life choices he made. Even when people are dealt a bad hand in life, it is their motivation and choices and moral values that over come that. You don't have to turn out bad because your father beat you, or because your parents died, or whatever other bad things could happen in life. That is a total cop out.
