If people knew that it would cost as much as it does, people would be outraged at doctors. Instead they're outraged at the companies who are paying for their health care costs because the insurance companies can't afford to pay for it either. Doctors would lower their prices if patients had to pay for their own health care instead of bleeding out insurance companies. Considering America was founded on independence from government and self sufficiency you'd think that Americans would be more willing to take care of themselves. As much as I like the Constitution, I think it got the ball rolling on the expansion of government and the welfare state. I'd be willing to go back to the Articles of Confederation. Is it right to not help someone who had an act committed on them with out them wanting it to happen? another car example If your sitting at a red light and someone slams in to the rear of your car at 30 mph, and totals your car, should you not get the money from the totaled car? They don't fucking matter. They are, in essence, hired to do a job because we think they can do that job better than the government. If they can't, then fuck them with an iron mace. Because there's no point in a health system that actively seeks to not help you get better. So, we can either go with Obama's plan to regulate them like fuck, or we can give the job to government, who at least have no clear motivation for actively denying care.

This is why the government needs to step in and do something about health insurance. However, I don't really fault the insurance companies; insurance is basically gambling, the insurance provider is betting that you won't get sick. If you get raped, your odds aren't too good, so you get nothing. It's simple math.
