They had the money anyway, there's nothing better to use it for than to increase the turnout for the Census, which is quite an important event in the US, it affects a great many factors of the governing of states and districts.

The census is pretty damn important, and people need to be made aware of it so they'll fill out the damn form and mail it back. No-brainer, really.

In the UK we could just whack this on the BBC for free. I anticipate the results of the "Religion" question in the US and UK censuses.

It's not about the cost for each person, it's just that the government could do so much more with that money.
