Kansas State University student kicked out after blackface snapchat selfies
She did actually. Social media is never private, and obviously one of her friends was hurt enough by this to report it. I also edited my post to say colleges get involved with your private life all the time, even off-campus.
No, she didn't actually, no matter how you spin it. She sent it to her friends only, not to everyone else. How is this different than revenge porn, other than the fact she didn't get naked?
Did she do it on university property? If not I don't think it's acceptable for them to expel her for what she does in her private life off campus.
Even if it was on campus, I don't think that she should have been expelled, especially since this was supposed to be just a harmless joke among friends.
Was tasteless from her but why the fuck would you kick out someone for being tasteless ?
The university acted dumber than she did by all means.
Something shared with a group of friends shouldnt have ramifications outside that group.

I do snapchats way worse/way more offensive than this to my friends.
[editline]19th September 2016[/editline]
If i say something offensive and nobody is around to get offended by it, is it really wrong?
Even if it was on campus, I don't think that she should have been expelled, especially since this was supposed to be just a harmless joke among friends.
Furthermore expelling someone from university, making them waste 1000s and putting a smear on their record, isn't going to do anything to solve racism. The contempt, held by her friends and family, for the university for doing that might be misdirected toward contempt for anti-racism campaign or even against black people for complaining about (legitimate) racism in the first place.
It's a fucking joke, if people use "nigga" there as casually as people in cali do, it's KNOWN to not have the same implications as the hard R in any way, shape, or form. At least at my old high school, people (of all races) would joke about being a "tru nigga", it's entirely ironic.
Not to mention how this was a private thing sent to only her friends- if they don't like it that much, they should just remove her.
This is what I hate about Snapchat. Somewhere along the line, people just started screenshotting absolutely everything. I went from being super goofy and silly on Snapchat to rarely using it for that anymore and just sending normal, boring shit. Had friends screening shit all the time and I just felt like it ruins the whole point of Snapchat.
Logging onto FB and seeing drunk snaps other friends have posted pasted all over for everyone to look at is just meh. She shouldn't be punished for sending this snap to her closed circle of friends tbh
What she did was wrong but going so far as expulsion? That's over the top. Maybe a warning or even the notion of probationary measures would have done okay.
Expelling them is stupid but at the same time posting shit like this to social media stupid even if you think it's private. Assume nothing is private on social media.
Posting the picture in the first place was pretty dumb. But Expulsion is a gross overreaction by the uni.
2016 sure is scary.
People sure love to play race card.
People sure love to play race card.
Nope
This is a university applying their rules in a heavy handed manner.
2016 sure is scary.
Especially for the USA with its Political correctness storm.
I'll never understand why people find this offensive, Its just illogical.
Nope

And who you think reported it to them?
wtf. As far as I understand it wasn't even blackface, it was a facial mask that happened to be dark and she made a silly comment about it.
Not to mention, they call each other nigger.
But now that I say it, it's racist :v:. Fucking retarded.
Not to mention, they call each other nigger.

Like gay people, if a straight person calls a gay person queer its generally used as a kind of insult. The word is being reclaimed though. Once a word used to oppress is now used to identify kinship or identity.
Its about context.
If you call a black guy a nigger you might be harkening back to segregation or slave times, it insinuates them being of a lower class with higher intelligence; with you, in that context, being in the class of the oppressors.
Also you say they its sorta simplifying the issue. Not everyone will use it or understand it in the same way. When "gangsta rap" uses it in his song he is uses it as an insult "you're the real niggers" implying that the people who stereotype him and mistreat him for his skin colour are the real subhumans. When Chris Rock uses niggas hes talking about black people who are losers. Tupac uses it as a gangster or a player. When white racists use it they probably mean like a sub human slave. Some people use it in a friendly thing like dude. Any of those meanings might spread outside of the subculture they originated - like I might say "me n my niggas gonna hit the town" I don't mean that me and my group of subhuman slaves are going to go to town, I mean I'm going out with my friends, black or otherwise, but I'd keep it in my friendship group where the context is understood. [sp]maybe people will read that and think im racist[/sp]
For the story in OP imo she isn't using it maliciously and its wrong for the uni to punish her.
And who you think reported it to them?
Burden of proof would be on you to demonstrate that the person reporting was playing the race card.
It might have gone viral round campus and someone responsible for enforcing rules might have seen it. It might have been reported by someone who didn't like the girl. It might have been reported by someone who thought it was racist (note how they dont have to have been offended themselves eg how I might report something I deem could be offensive despite the fact that I myself might not be offended by it, I wouldn't have reported this though it doesn't seem like she's trying to be unpleasant to anyone)
Whatever happened to the days if you had a problem with someone you took it up with them?
I have had many friends do offensive shit and actually piss me off. However, I've never once thought about turning them into the school or publicly shaming them. I took it up with them personally and pretty much said that shit they did wasn't cool. You know what happened after i said that? The person realized they where being an ass and stopped.
Her friends are dickhead snitches. The school is equally retarded in expelling her, what she did was stupid but it was suppose to be between friends. Lets expel every student that makes racist jokes between friends. If the school really had to get involved they should have done their job and showed her why that stuff isn't cool. Make her take a pop culture class or media class and learn about the history of black face and learn about racism in the movie industry.
Really stupid thing of her to do, sure, but even as someone who really hates this kind of stuff, expulsion is way too far.
The fact that a school cares about anything regarding social media that isn't harassment/threats is really concerning
This is stupid. Stuff like this makes me afraid to even make a harmless joke for fear that it might offend someone. Stuff like this is also why I never use social media. They can't expel you if they can't dig shit up on you.
I don't like that modern colleges are trying to police people's thoughts now. Colleges are for education and degrees, once you leave the classroom, it should be none of the college's business. I'd sue if I were her
Colleges do not respect privacy at all, such liberal freedoms threaten their bottom line in the form of image (therefore enrollment) and legal liability. At my college (once known as the biggest party school in the state) greek life was reigned in and neutered basically by a very PC vision for the future. To achieve this end the Greek director prowls through social media of greek members he meets and has been known to show up at parties and intimidate orgs into compliance with strict rules using what he finds, especially his first year.
As a result, most people just go to clubs in the city now.
Is that blackface or some facial mask that she decided to make a stupid comment for as a joke?
Looks like a facial mask. My mom used a kale one the other day that did the same thing, and we made Al Jolson jokes about it (also some O Brother, Where Art Thou? references). It wasn't as thick as the stuff this chick's got on though; it was more oily/liquidy.
[editline]19 September 2016[/editline]
How about stay the fuck out of people's personal lives and stop imposing on them when they do stuff in their own free time? Or are we abolishing the concept of having a personal life and the privacy that goes along with it? Apparently, it's the latter. I understand we've been headed in that direction for a while now on various fronts, but it's disturbing that we're not doing anything about it (for our own sakes).
We've got to fight back against bullshit like this, because otherwise this is just going to continue. And I mean that in two ways: we've got to fight back against this invasion of privacy and this idea that institutions are free to impose themselves onto us even when we're enjoying our private lives, and we simultaneously must fight back against this kind of ridiculous political correctness.

Still retarded. You are with your hommies, you call each other nigga, nigger, tru nigga, the real nigga, rappers and other artists use this words and so on.. all ok, fine by me.
Then someone else who isn't white uses word nigga and BOOM whole twitter is offended.
That girl didn't even directed this word at anyone to be offended at - it was 'private' conversation.

True, would need shitload of evidence. But just looking at Twitter posts revolving around this issue gives you an idea. People are just looking for something to be offended at, celebrating 'victory' because they suspended the girl from university.

Sad that people have so much unguided contempt that they celebrate a girls life being trashed.
It's nice that the university is trying to do something about racism but this case is an utter failure
A few years ago a white male junior at my high school who i was friends with got expelled because some angry teacher overheard him greet a few black friends with "wassup my niggas," which they were fine with. It would have been completely fine if he was black, he would have just been fussed at for inappropriate language
Blackface is straight up racist, though. Historically, people used blackface in 1800s-1900s plays in place of actual black people, and they were always complete jokes. If some people irl saw the woman like that, they would have attacked her. This is a horribly tasteless joke and she probably has been publicly ridiculed for it. Which should, really, be all the punishment she should get.
KSU's code of conduct (found by a quick google) doesn't really mention racism or the punishment for it anywhere, though, so I'm not sure if they had the right to do this.
But she wasn't out in public.
You shouldn't get expelled for something as harmless as this.
"Feels good to finally be a nigga" isn't exactly harmless in all honesty, it's not wildly racist but it's very, very out of taste
