"Feels good to finally be a nigga" isn't exactly harmless in all honesty, it's not wildly racist but it's very, very out of taste
Being out of taste is very harmless.
"Feels good to finally be a nigga" isn't exactly harmless in all honesty, it's not wildly racist but it's very, very out of taste
should her life be ruined for it, at least costing her 1000s. At most they should have made her do a course or something. Really though it was meant to be private, she didn't plan on it insulting people, it wasn't intended to insult or propagate racism or make anybody feel bad. Whats worst is people will use this as ammo to use against legitimate anti-racism programs. big mess.
Not to mention, they call each other nigger. But now that I say it, it's racist :v:. Fucking retarded.
Nice generalization there. I know blacks (they are africans, not americans) who don't say it at all because they think it's disrespectful towards their ancestors. They don't think it's okay when blacks say it either. Then I have black friends who absolutely don't care when anyone says nigga. Stop generalizing, you clearly have a superficial view on the issue.
So this is what I kept getting email about. It's really shitty that you can get kicked out of college for something that has nothing to do with the school. It's also creepy that colleges will stalk your social media accounts.
Colleges need to stop with this kinda stuff. If someone is paying huge amounts of money to be there, what they do outside of the university is none of their business, especially if no one gets hurt or a crime hasn't been committed. A lot of people might have found her joke tasteless, but looking at it I just shrugged and didn't think anything of it. At most, she should have been brought in and told that her behavior was inappropriate, but that's it.
She did actually. Social media is never private, and obviously one of her friends was hurt enough by this to report it. I also edited my post to say colleges get involved with your private life all the time, even off-campus.
Snapchat isnt exactly social media. It's way more private than, say, facebook or twitter. Calling snapchat social media is like calling texting social media.
Blackface is straight up racist, though. Historically, people used blackface in 1800s-1900s plays in place of actual black people, and they were always complete jokes. If some people irl saw the woman like that, they would have attacked her. This is a horribly tasteless joke and she probably has been publicly ridiculed for it. Which should, really, be all the punishment she should get.
It's a facial mask that she was wearing on her private property Why should she face public ridicule for doing something in private like that?
It's a facial mask that she was wearing on her private property Why should she face public ridicule for doing something in private like that?
Because feelings. It's a fucking terrible reason, but there's no shortage of people out there these days who seriously think this way.
It's a facial mask that she was wearing on her private property Why should she face public ridicule for doing something in private like that?
Technically yes, it was a facial mask, and nobody would have cared that she was wearing it if she didn't make the joke, but in this context where she says in a snapchat "im a nigga now" it isn't really any different than actual blackface I think what she did was wrong, but she shouldn't have gotten kicked out for it

I think we all do it.

It's not like there's a Blackface brand blackface.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Is it wrong to make offensive jokes in private? I think we all do it.

Paige Shoemaker, a former pre-med biochemistry major, is insisting that her intentions were good, the photo wasn’t blackface, and that the image was meant to be a joke. "I mean, not that this is a good thing. That word just happens in our friend group because we know everyone is like calm. We're a big family,” she recently told KSNT. “That word doesn't offend anyone in our group. And when I sent it out to my friends, I knew that it wouldn't offend anyone."
That's what the student thought too. I guess the friend who posted the picture wasn't comfortable with it, and when it spread around it made people think she actually was racist.
Glad she's gone, though. Imagine all the feelings she could have hurt
Whats "actual blackface"? It's not like there's a Blackface brand blackface.
It's when a performer intentionally applies theatrical makeup to their faces to impersonate a black person, invoking stereotypes and racism in the process. Blackface is the name of the whole shabang FYI. Wearing a face mask to exfoliate your skin and shit is not blackface. Wearing a face mask to exfoliate your skin and posting a picture of yourself on Snapchat with the joking caption "feels good to finally be a nigga" is not blackface. There's a difference between that vs. what performers like Al Jolson, minstrel jubilee shows, and race baiters used to put on; that was blackface. (Al Jolson was at least funny and not blatantly offensive for his time, probably because he was a Jew and felt some sympathy for black Americans.)

Whether you think that deserves an expulsion or not they clearly knew that was the joke. Saying "Oh they're just being misunderstood!" Is laughable when even they've said it was a joke too. Blackface also hasn't been used to exclusively describe theatre performances since the end of the civil rights era.
Whats "actual blackface"? It's not like there's a Blackface brand blackface.
Makeup applied explicitly for the purpose of appearing like a caricature of a race (typically African)
Colleges shouldn't play the role of baby sitters. These people are legally adults paying the college for a service, why you would harm your own customers is beyond me. No one is going to attend this college because "they kicked out that one racist girl"
it will go both ways, like the chik-fil-a thing.
good, deserved
How so? Seems a little extensive...

Normal people do it from time to time. Sometimes I really have to ask myself if other people's life experiences are so different from mine that we see the world in completely different ways. I've got friends of all colors and types and we do racial jokes all the time. Everyone laughs and goes home with mutual respect.
