I don't get the backlash over being asked not to use offensive language.
I've used words before where I didn't even know were offensive to someone, then I got called on it. Guess what? I didn't get mad, I stopped using those words and used OTHER words that get the same meaning across. There are many different words for just about everything.
To get mad I was asked not to use that one particular word seems very childish to me. It's not like I have a personal investment in those words.
WebM for Retards comes from 4chan when WebM support was added, but no one knew how to make them from ffmpeg command line, hence the "for Retards" part.

This isn't GitHub asking nicely. This is GitHub saying "remove it or we'll remove your repository".

Everyone is mad because it's such a nonissue. Policing words like retard is so stupid and absurd really.

Which is harder to do: ctrl-fing a word out of your repository that doesn't even actually have bearing on the code, or organizing a lynch mob to avoid doing the former? It's a nonissue alright, but the people asking you to stop using slurs aren't the babies making it into a big issue.

I don't have a problem with people protesting political correctness using open-source code, and just because it's easier to not flaunt your stance doesn't mean it's best.
And as always, the irony here is who is actually having panic attacks over this.
Is this your tactic now? Coming into threads and going "wow look at all you nerds getting mad at stuff, you're just as silly"?
Seems like a pretty poor deflection when one side is word-policing and shutting down projects arbitrarily while the other side is just taking issue with it.

The ironic thing is that the side I'm on is the latter of the two here. There's nothing wrong with pointing out hypocrisy when it occurs, and since I already pointed out the specifics of this removal and no one has seen fit to rebut that there's not much else to do here.

Oh boo hoo Github doesn't want you to use offensive language in your projects. What will the world do now that a project isn't using the word "retard" in its README.md and a couple of source files? Free speech has truly been shredded.

Mockery, a great way to prove your point.
I have actually seen people complain about GIMP's name a few times.
If the pc police actually knew anything about the topics they complained about, their heads would probably explode.

It's a matter of principle, censorship is still censorship, just because it's easier to just take it doesn't mean you should.

I'm just saying, it's so inconsequential I can't care

If you can't care then why are you going around mocking things? I don't get it.

Seems pretty on point to me when this is, as itisjuly points out, really a non-issue. If you seriously have a problem with being asked not to use offensive language in your readme filed hosted on a public platform, don't have a fit over such a minor thing and then try to complain that the other side is being oversensitive. Painting this as some existential freedom of speech crisis is such over-the-top melodrama that it's impossible to take seriously.
If you wanna talk about whether public companies should have standards of conduct in their TOS then fine, but all this about 'word police' and 'shutting down projects arbitrarily' and 'censorship' is blowing things ridiculously out of proportion and engaging in exactly the sort of outrage culture behavior that loads of people here claim to oppose.
Is this heavy-handed? Sure. Is it a sign that the SJW stormtroopers are lining up to haul you away for thoughtcrime? Uh, no. Please treat it accordingly, or don't be surprised if people mock you for taking things a little bit too seriously.

If its such a non issue why should github be policing the developer's language, why should offensive language trump developer freedom to write what they damn well please on the programs they worked on.

You're using github's service, you abide their rules. You don't like it? There's alternatives.

You get to decide what's an issue for other people now?
I mean, I value freedom of speech and tolerance above damn near all else, definitely including not offending or otherwise indirectly hurting innocent members of minorities, and others might point to the slippery slope - the fact that people accepting this one rather inconsequential act of censorship are significantly more likely and conditioned to accept other kinds of censorship - but one should still recognise that that consequence exists.

Is the word "retard" such a big issue? To be fair I think that to whoever it is, they need to seek help.
idk i just consider that github, a place to host open-source software which means more freedom with software is trying to discourage people from uploading their code because it contains things they don't like, that's a pretty dumb way to promote freedom.
I personally use obscenities in a code comments and in commits out of frustation and because I'm not working in a company and I don't have to be polite when writing my code.
I know it's their rules, but it's hypocritical to promote freedom and then tell people that they can't use obscenities directed to no one in particular and without the objective of offending people.
Is it that hard not to do anything and to allow the people that write code to use obscenities? i've seen no one get offended by a comment in code.
I'm just saying, it's so inconsequential I can't care
You care enough to try to shut up the people who do care through mockery and belittlement.

Well now you have. Yeah I agree it's silly but github wants to be family friendly now so whacha gona do about ot/

It was not until github pointed it out that people got "offended".
I've never seen anyone complain in any situation unrelated to this accident.

Neither have I, I thought adults didn't feel offended by a random curse word here and there. But here comes age of the feels where politically correct code is king.
I'm just saying, it's so inconsequential I can't care
It's a pretty big deal, because GitHub is essentially going to start curtailing based on something as subjective as morality and political correctness in an environment that's supposed to be open for developers.

Wasn't the code used inside actually using retard in the sense of slowing down?
What about Ritard?
