They already kicked off at least one repo for similarly feeble reasons.
(Not talking about C+= here, btw. That one had people forge contributions from another user so in my opinion they rightly shut that one down.)
In practice you can get kicked off most popular project hosting services for not being politically correct (and having the "right" people complain about it).
Honestly I feel that the word "retard" is the victim of language evolution, yeah the context is originally derogatory, but by default it isn't anymore unless you're super over sensitive. Years ago maybe it would be okay to say "don't use the word retard here" because at that time "retard" was actually the commonly used word for someone with a mental deficiency (even in some professional, polite and public settings at one point in time), but it isn't anymore for obvious reason. Maybe if github has a policy against words that you wouldn't use in polite company such as fuck, shit, crap, damn, etc.. But by the commonly used definition of the word retard, it isn't a derogatory term for mental handicap so much anymore. Though that said I wouldn't use it in a public, professional or polite setting, same reason I wouldn't just scream out "fuck, shit, ass, crap." or shit like that. Context is important after all.
It's sort of like how "fag" was used as a derogatory term for gay people but then it just sort of lost meaning in that context to most people and became a general swear word from the context I've seen. I don't honestly think I've ever met someone use the term "fag" for its original derogatory purpose, though obviously it has been somewhere because that's what the word fag became at some point to begin with. Even all my gay friends call people "fags" for being stupid or shit at times. It's just language evolution, though I do see why some people would and do get offended by it.
would you still utilize the word retard around a disabled person?
if no, then the word hasn't changed significantly enough to believe that it's "evolved".
and on fag - just because you've not heard it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. good friend of mine was beaten for being gay to the point of getting sent to the hospital. the assailants continually spouted fag as they punched kicked etc.
Did I miss something? I'm confused, you're saying that people [presumably GitHub employees?] have already demonstrated the will to target you [in what way? your GitHub repos?] for opinions outside of GitHub?
If this sounds sarcastic it's not, I feel like I've missed some detail here
There are some very vocal people who will slander you everywhere they can find if they notice you have an opinion they don't like (e.g. opposing gay marriage, or saying that women aren't systematically oppressed in modern western societies).
That said, while the Open Code of Conduct is likely illegal for businesses to adopt in many countries (due to being racist and sexist itself and as such discriminatory), it doesn't appear to have any rules against off-platform behaviour.

But Louis CK and South Park said I could say it!

Would you use any word to denote lesser intelligence around a disabled person?
You can use bitbucket, man
Bitbucket is a joke. The only reason why anyone uses Bitbucket is because of the free 5 private repos
First thing first, they should change their name, it's derogatory.

Not sure if you're joking but git is the name of the version control system they host.
Git is git because it was designed by the same Linus Torvalds that fill his Linux kernel with fucks and shits and raises middle finger to Nvidia, and yes, that is intentional
Why the 'Git' name?
Quoting Linus: "I'm an egotistical bastard, and I name all my projects after myself. First 'Linux', now 'Git'".
('git' is British slang for "pig headed, think they are always correct, argumentative").
Alternatively, in Linus' own words as the inventor of Git: "git" can mean anything, depending on your mood:
Random three-letter combination that is pronounceable, and not actually used by any common UNIX command. The fact that it is a mispronunciation of "get" may or may not be relevant.
Stupid. Contemptible and despicable. Simple. Take your pick from the dictionary of slang.
"Global information tracker": you're in a good mood, and it actually works for you. Angels sing and light suddenly fills the room.
"Goddamn idiotic truckload of sh*t": when it breaks

You mean unlimited private repos? I have a good 200 on there if I'm not mistaken.
5 is the number of collaborators who can work with you for free on those.
That said, the actual dealbreaker with Github for me is that it doesn't support Hg, which for my workflow works much better than Git.
