Extreme poverty and poor health seems to cause overpopulation abroad, not the other way around. Or, rather, it's cyclical, but improving health kicks you out of the feedback loop.
When our Foundation first started up, it was focused on reproductive health. That was the main thing we did because I thought population growth in poor countries is the biggest problem they face. You’ve got to help mothers who want to limit family size have the tools and education to do that. That’s the only thing that really counts. Well then I came across articles that showed that the key thing you can do to reduce population growth is actually improve health. And that sounds paradoxical. You think, ‘OK, better health means more kids not less kids.’
Well in fact, what parents are doing is they’re trying to have two kids survive to adulthood to take care of them. And so, the more disease burden that there is, the more kids they have to have to have that high probability. So there’s a perfect correlation that as you improve health, within a half generation the population growth rate goes down. In fact Hans Rosling, here at this conference, in two of my favorite speeches, actually showed that unbelievable correlation that population growth has gone down. Today, where is there high population growth? It’s in the places with the worst health conditions – northern Nigeria, northern India. And so the two problems go exactly hand in hand. If we improve health rapidly we will get the peak population to be as much as a billion below the current expected peak. That is about 8.3 billion versus 9.3.

Where in the solid hell did you get the notion that we can only sustain two billion people?
Sustain comfortably, do you think everyone right now is at least middle class and has basic necessities? Plus the fact that more people= more pollution, which screws up the world and creates less areas that crops can grow at. If you think it's made up go do google searches on areas destroyed by factories and pollutants.
But feel free to disregard everything and think the world's completely fine.
No matter what good Obama does, people will always say it's a bad idea.
Headlines:
"Obama Punches Comet back To Space, Saves Baby!"
Typical uninformed ignorant commenter: Obama just did that for his reelection! He's the anti-christ!
Anyway, I don't much about abortion, but this is good news, right?

That's an incredibly illogical assertion. We can sustain far more than 2 billion people comfortably. The problem is that wealth and necessities tend to be concentrated in smaller areas.

with all that creation of life facepunch is some kind of council of the gods then
If we had a Republican president this would never had happened in a million years. That's why we need more liberal presidents.

Well now. See what the last one did to us
I like widely available birth control, but I don't see why it's an employer's responsibility.
It's good because only good republicans should breed anyway.

I've read the Fox News website comments for like 2 hours, and I've literally seen people saying these things.
There were also some who said Obama should be locked up, Democrats not allowed in the Government, and one guy who said they should just kill all the Liberals.
Locking up political opponents, blind nationalism, unity under one banner (christianity), limiting the rights of their enemies (gays, liberals, etc), an obsession with the military- I swear some of the shit on that site sounds downright Fascist.
Why? If I want to employ someone but but not pay for her abortions, why should I?
Most of you value individual freedom when it comes to drugs and sharing of information, yet are equally quick to jump on socialist, quite freedom-limiting economic policies like these.

What exactly is so bad about socialism.

What I pointed out could definitely be considered a bad thing if you're on the classic liberal side of the spectrum. It's all subjective of course.
I still think attaching health care to employment is the modern form of wage slavery.
That's really why employers didn't like the bill, if there was a public option their workers would not have to put up with their bullshit and could quit if they wanted without fear of losing their insurance.
