Wait, DNF had a story?
duke saves the world in Duke 3D, becomes a national celebrity and hero, 10+ years later the aliens come back to take over the world and steal women to impregnate them to create more aliens, turns out the current president is trying to take over the world with help of the aliens I mean, sure, the plot is shit and cliche, but I can't really make jokes of ignoring the plot since the game loves to have you standing around listening to what people have to say. Like they thought all the Duke worship and cheesy, cliche 90's movie lines everyone expositions with actually mattered. And they don't even play the plot for parody despite the rest of the attempts at humor in the game, which is a hugely missed opportunity.
I'm one of those people that grew up with Serious Sam instead of Duke so this doesn't really get me hyped after the bullshit that Duke Nukem Forever was.
I've always said that the next Duke Nukem game should open with Duke looking at the box for Forever and trying to figure out how fucking drunk he's been.
A new Duke Nukem game could work, and Shadow Warrior & ROTT have been pretty good so it looks like it could be a good game. Gameplay wise, make it mazelike and DOOMlike with tons of secrets, fast paced dodging around while explosives go by and challenging. Storywise, make Duke a parody of the incredible stereotypical machismo seen in our movies, television, and video games. A roided out beefcake who kills millions of aliens/insurgents/whatever, gets all the chicks, says crappy one liners and exemplifies the stereotypical ideal male. I mean, that's how I interpreted Duke Nukem 3D, not sure if that was the intent but it's still culturally relevant as ever.
Oh, nice! I've never really been into the games but I've always thought Duke was a cool character. I'll bet there's a parallel universe out there where DNF didn't switch engines in mid-1998 and instead was finished and released sometime in early fall- where it overshadowed the original Half Life.
This could be for Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded, gonna call it now.
Duke didn't do so well in forever as a character because they had shitty writers and just copied what they did in Duke 3D. Whereas when they did it in Duke 3D it was something quite different for a video game. Every bit of talent that was working on DNF pretty much left by the time they had scrapped the 2001 version of the game though, so it never really had a ton of hope as a franchise after that. It's weird, because they were originally had plans to change Duke into an actual developed character, but any interesting direction they were going in died with Broussard's change of attitude from "lets make something unique and awesome" to "let's cram in everything cool everybody else does". It's pretty sad what happened - the leads basically went from trying to make the best game they could to just phoning it in, they traded good ideas for better tech that was always one step behind, and copying whatever was out, so it basically be came a mash up of every other game with some Duke 3D stuff slapped on top of it, mixed with some very poorly written humor.
I still have my fingers crossed that 3DRealms will release the source code for the original game.
A lot of those set pieces were fake though
They made the Rise of The Triad (2013 Remake) and handled a few Duke Nukem games not only on IOS but on the PC too.
This will be good.
I think Duke Nukem would work great as a post-modernist reboot. Like, keep the character of Duke totally the same, but have everyone else react to him as an insufferable, irritating social reject.
oh boy another duke nukem game can we just stop with duke please? i'm not trying to insult duke nukem fan boys but serious sam is 10x better my option and has alot more secrets and exploring and less tits and more gameplay you know stuff thats not for freaking pigs.
The gameplay of Serious Sam and Duke are nothing alike, beyond shooting things.
So all of the people in here that act like Duke is so stupid must be COD fan boys. Sorry this isn't another COD game (its actually unique). At least the developers aren't in it to make boat loads of money like other franchises. The days of Doom and Duke are sadly gone and we have to wait for shit like COD? No thanks! People forget what a quality game was back then, either that or I'm old and stuck in my ways cause most new games are stupid but some aren't.
There are only two games in this world. The game I like, and CoD.

so what the heck is going on at that all out of gum site, the background is all blurred out and theres an "emergency broadcast system" on it instead and you hear people screaming and probably aliens attacking them. also the timer is blurred out too.
I feel like Blood Dragon was close enough to Duke Nukem humor to prove that it can still be done very well nowadays. The problem with DNF wasn't that there's nothing Duke can parody anymore, the problem was that they wanted to parody everything that they missed in the 15 years they were working on it.

Duke is a pastiche of 80's action heroes.
The days of Doom and Duke are sadly gone and we have to wait for shit like COD?No thanks! I think it would be better if they made Duke Nukem not as cool as he thinks he is. He was way too Mary Sue-ish in DKF and no one even called him out on his lame one-liners.

It was more a parody of that era of film and how early games played out. If you put a tiny bit of effort in you could easily say it was more a deconstruction of how superficial things like the plot are in macho action extravaganzas like Blood Dragon was. To say a new Duke would work with the old humour today just because Blood Dragon did well doesn't seem right to me.
Still hoping for a Blood remake.
To all the people saying Duke Nukem couldn't work today and that he has no character should play this mod. It pretty much shows the universe is alive and well. http://www.moddb.com/mods/duke-nukem-forever Gearbox made duke into what they could relate to, a frat boy.
Still hoping for a Blood remake.
Devolver Digital, the creators of the new Shadow Warrior were planning on going after the rights. Apparently, Activision wants a lot for the license. No clue why. They haven't done anything with the series in over 15 years.
