Donald Trump Jr compares Syrian refugees to a poisoned bowl of Skittles

For god's sake, show some empathy. This lovely human being dehumanized the refugees by comparing them to a 10 cent package of candy. The comparison is kind of moot anyway since nearly all the attacks committed so far in America were committed by radicalized elements in the local population.
Put yourself in their place, and think what would go through your mind if you fled from your country and had to move to somewhere in Asia, and got subjected to the same rhetoric that our Asian equivalent of Trump uses to inflame his followers.
As oversimplified analogies go, this one is pretty good.
People will eat this up.

no they won't cuz they're scared of the poison

It certainly is toxic rhetoric
Going by that analogy, a single terrorist can kill America.
I would take a handful and carefully analyze the skittles to determine which ones are the poisonous ones and then eat the rest.

How is that currently working out for you Sweden?
One is a skittle, the other is a piece of smegma colored orange
More like "one is actually a Reese's Piece but you've indicated you prefer Skittles, so it claims to be a Skittle, and the other is a piece of smegma-coated orange".

same logic here. horseshoe theroy keeps the world goin round
I think that needs to be updated. It should be culturally libertarian vs authoritarian. There are no such things as moderates. Just people who have respect for others and those who are incapable of doing so. As you pointed out, the authoritarians often use the same word structures (despite the ideals they hold to), thus indicating the same psychological mindset which lead to the same outcomes.

Not surprised. There are earlier examples of the far-right using arguments that some feminists would normally use.
It's a common argument that we are going to protect womens' rights by not accepting refugees because they are sexist. And then there's that whole burkini debacle. It's a horribly bigoted argument no matter its source anyhow.
I have a bowl of skittles. there are two skittles left. you have to elect one of them as president
except both of them are filled with shit
This lovely human being dehumanized the refugees by comparing them to a 10 cent package of candy.
Really? It's a rhetorical analogy. People don't get bent out of shape at the analogy of a bad apple spoiling the bunch when it's frequently applied to police, because it's understood that it's illustrating a general concept idiomatically and not actually literally comparing people to fruit.
The issue Europe is currently facing with extremists hiding among refugees demonstrates that there needs to be a vetting system in place, but with so many refugees having no documentation and coming from countries in disarray it's pretty much impossible to externally verify much. This is a legitimate problem, not unfounded 'gotta keep those dirty brown people out' xenophobia.
except both of them are filled with shit
one of them looks okay but is filled with shit, the other one looks like shit but is filled with arsenic
one of them looks okay but is filled with shit, the other one looks like shit but is filled with arsenic
and theres a third one thats fine but a week later you'll be mugged in an alley way by a dressed as an M&M and then lynched using a fucking garbage can
and you can't even tell which of the other two m&m's put that one there
id eat them and hope i got the one that kills me first so i dont suffer through this fuckin election any longer

Right so you say vetting
People who use that analogy and using it to justify the opposition to any sensible strategy for housing refugees. Nobody in the right mind is saying "let them in but dont vet them".
Indeed if governments have great control over the flow of migrants then they will be in a better position for that vetting.
To discuss the analogy. It is an attempt to dehumanise them, its evident from the precedent set by a series of similar attempts ie wave, flood, parasites, cockroaches, boat people, terrorists. Police face the same thing, specifically "pigs" but for migrants/refugees is far more widespread and the consequences will be 1000 people drowning weekly in the Mediterranean.
quick note on "economic migrants" before this is was asylum seeker or migrant. When heart breaking pcitures emerged and people realised these migrants were actually people a new rhetoric was needed. Economic migrant serves to frame them as lazy, greedy parasites only coming for free stuff. Once that narrative is established people can get away with saying "we need to stop them, most of them are economic migrants" which is to say "most of them are just cockroaches here to steal and freeload". Another way to separate them from their humanity and quash any notions that they are people who need help.

Badly. I said grab a handful, not take the whole bowl. I never said I agree with my government's choices in this ordeal.
But that's also a key point - everything in moderation. Shut the lid when it's too much too handle. Open it again when everything's stable again.
[editline]d[/editline]
Maybe it should be a jar of Skittles. My analogy doesn't work otherwise.
Who puts Skittles in bowls anyway?

As long as the refugees are vetted, given exams and have western values / willing to accept western values. They are welcome.
If not - tough cookies.

To be fair this is as stupid as making a food analogy in the first place.
You have a bigger chance of dying by a common hazard? Well color me surprised. Next thing you're gonna tell me that more people are dying of obesity!
It's baffling that someone let Trump stick his dick in them.

Kinda highlights how irrational it is to allow human suffering to go on, though. I mean, I understand that people don't want terrorists in their country, but the risk of dying from a terrorist attack seems pretty small compared to both the amount of money we throw after the problem as well as the lives we could by taking in refugees (or find a different solution).
Maybe try to apply it to ww2.
Don't let the skittles into the UK, let the nazis put the skittles on a train to poland. Sadly people actually had that stance. Maybe being a bag of dicks is the default human state.
Send the skittles home to fight for their country against Assad/IS/Russia/Rebels
The syrian war is not comparable to the holocaust at all.
at all.
Of course this analogue is going to be called racist immediately, but the same analogue against men isn't supposedly sexist.
The kicker is the analogue can be used to demonize any group of people in existence because there is no group without bad individuals.

what the fuck i think this guy wants to eat refugees
A wonderful analogy if the skittles were alive, in need of help and instead of eating we were trying to save them.
The way these people talk about refugees you'd think they actually didn't believe they were alive.

The amount of dehumanization that surrounds any discussion regarding the refugee crisis is honestly concerning.

I'm so confused how the political elite have managed to get people to resent those who are fleeing from a devastating and senseless war.
What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say.
Who in their right mind would poison a bowl of skittles.
Might be NSFW
