When the papal conclave convenes to vote for the next pope, they burn paper that gives off black or white smoke. Black smoke means no election whereas white smoke means a pope has been selected.

Depends how hot it is. Petrol based products do burn hotter so while it's possible I wouldn't say it's the most wise to trust it as the sole method of eliminating the data. Physical destruction of the platters and then fire is still the best option. Plus it ensures a more uniform heat to the platter parts.
