Probably before he realized he could have have unlimited terms as long as there's a break for someone else.
Also probably before the law was changed to 6 year terms.
he was a good president as far as leadership and being a rallying figure went but he was no reformer, his party also went to shit with oligarchs pretty much taking over. at least according to my Russian professor.
We can also thank Putin for this

I'm imagining him sitting in his office with the exact same expression right now.
See, that's what I mean, dude got such silly likeable image it's hard not to smile when looking at him.
It's much harder to see him as an actual threat for the public.
Have any other countries sep for Poland mobilized troops?

Which is why he shouldn't stay in power forever. You had your run Putin, it's time for someone else to have fun.
Have any other countries sep for Poland mobilized troops?
Poland hasn't mobilized, it was a false report.

Any legitimate developments? Has the U.N. or NATO said anything in the last few hours, and have the Russians made any more moves, or are they just sitting and waiting?
This whole thing is rather nerve-wracking. I tend to avoid being dramatic about these sort of things, but as per everything that's happened in the last week, it all still feels so surreal. I mean, the invasion of Ossetia was one thing, but Ukraine? I feel like I'm living in the '80s or something.
[editline]3rd March 2014[/editline]
And not like the good '80s with disco and really good sci-fi. I'm talking about the scary, geopolitical global conflict '80s :v:

I can't tell if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Oh, BBC reporters twitter says there are reports of a buildup of armoured vehicles.

Ah, so bad news it is, then.

Ah! Here we go!
Ukrainian border guards reported a build-up of armoured vehicles on the Russian side of a narrow sea channel dividing Russia and the Ukrainian region of Crimea.
A border statement guard spokesman also said on Monday that Russian ships had been moving in and around the port city of Sevastopol, where the Russian Black Sea Fleet has a base, and that Russian forces had blocked mobile telephone services in some areas.
The build-up of Russian armour was near a ferry port on the Russian side of the Kerch Channel opposite the Ukrainian city of Kerch, a border guard spokesman said. [Reuters]
From what has been told to me about Russia before (and please correct me if I'm wrong, this is going off of the word of a teacher I had in high school) is that Russia has had a deep-seated fear of the West ever since the sheer devastation that came with Napoleon's invasion. The trauma that was inflicted by it made Russia borderline obsessive towards securing its borders against potential threats, especially from the west, through close allies and buffer states. Hitler's invasion and the slew of anti-West propaganda that persisted throughout the Cold War (and to some extent still to this day) only served to perpetuate, if not outright amplify, this attitude.
A Ukraine that has completely sided with the West would make Russia feel vulnerable and so it seems almost natural that Russia is taking such extreme steps to hold onto what little blanket against the West they have left.
Damn commies!
Russia and China are in broad agreement on Ukraine, says the Russian foreign ministry, as reported by AFP.
Perfectly correct! This Napoleon bastard still haunts me in my nightmares.
You should totally work as a psychiatrist.
If we're about to witness the live invasion of a country...I don't know even know what to describe this feeling. It's so scary that something like that could happen yet..curiosity to see

You're late, the invasion already happened. Crimea has been annexed and Ukrainian military have been disarmed. It's de-facto Russian territory, US is trying to contain this to just Crimea as they know they wont be getting Sevastopol back anytime soon. Nobody has fired a single shot yet, this is one of the cleanest military annexations in history.
Holy fucking shit, the Russian Stock Market is crashing.

That second bit is suspect. Source?
I love our Russian FP members having a good attitude about this. You guys are great people!
Senior US officials dismissed claims that Washington is incapable of exerting influence on the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, but were forced to admit that Crimea had been successfully invaded by 6,000 airborne and ground troops in what could be the start of a wider invasion.
“They are flying in reinforcements and they are settling in,” one senior official said. Another senior official said: “Russian forces now have complete operational control of the Crimean peninsula.”
On Monday, the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said he had discussed Ukraine with his Chinese counterpart and their views coincided on the situation there.
Lavrov said in a statement that the two veto-wielding UN security council members would stay in close contact on the issue.

Not really.
Nobody believes it, not even my friends in the US army, but it is happening. That what we are not expecting.
Not really.
In his mind he still lives in the soviet area, that's not calculated, invading Ukraine in times where revolutions are happening all over the world, that's not calm.

It also fucks Russias credibility in all the other central Asia countries. They can't be sure of Russia anymore.
