Russia invades Ukraine. Roads and airports being blocked and occupied
They allowed 7 and there are clearly more than 7 in Ukrainian airspace.
the 7 felt lonely and depressed and absolutely HAD to have more company
How is occupying an airport not "taking territory", please tell?
It's not Russian army occupying the airfield. It's a militia of pro-russian Ukrainian citizens. It's civil unrest or whatever. Russia can't take responsibility for Ukrainian citizens, even if they are behaving in a way that's convenient for them.
And they would look stupid if they responded before they knew what they were dealing with.
America won't want to do anything because currently as it stands:
Russian troops near a russian base
Unknown troops and vehicles across the region (might be well armed militia or even the ukerainian army)
Russian helicoptors flying over with permission of the interim government.
Obviously? I doubt we're going to hear much from Washington until a week or so.

The sneaky Russian mission music from Men of War goes well with this thread.
And what, pray tell, should the West do? We can't roll troops in, that's just a blatant call to war with the second largest modern army on the planet. Which isn't an option. We can't sanction Russia, they're so big they can just laugh and ignore the sanctions. Angry letters do fuck all, and Russia will just shrug and screw around during any negotiations to stall them into failing.
Which is actually why I'm interested in the Western response. I doubt this will escalate heavily though.
The Interior minister outright stated it was an invasion.
the interior minister is a batshit crazy nationalist who made the situation in ukraine much, much worse by disbanding the berkut, of course he's going to try and slander the russians
Shit's about to get even more real
da, mighty mother russia will crush the imperialist dogs.

being serious through, i don't think russia will be stupid enough to invade ukraine, since it would pretty much reignite the cold war for real, putin is ambitious, not stupid, i can see MAYBE crimea seceding from ukraine through, even if unlikely, it will probably just end up with a treaty giving more autonomy to crimea or something.
Honestly with most of the world's attention still warm in the area from the Sochi games, hopefully that attention will seep over to this recent development. These 'well dressed, speztnaz imitators' would probably stop their shenanigans once more attention is drawn to this. Either that or someone will call bullshit on Russia. (My bet is the later)

They are done for quite some time now
It seems like Ukraine has been very quiet about this whole incident until now. I'm guessing they are waiting to see if the Russians push further into Ukraine out of Crimea.
Why do Russia wants Ukraine so badly?
Comrades, we are only here to protect you from your own internal affairs, invasion is such a negative word.

Just Crimea, for its warm water port.
Ukrainan source says that Simferopol's airport is left alone:
Armed men in unmarked uniforms are leaving the Simpferopol's airport territory, which they've been patrolling for the whole day
Maybe someone can find a source in English.
What is exactly the Ukrainian government then? Because some claim invasion and others give permission to cross the border.
Right now Ukraine is more or less degrading into what amounts to two governemnts. The proEU, anti-russian one based in Kiev which ousted the president and a pro russian one based in the east and supporting by Crimeans not counting the tatars.
The Kiev one actually violated a lot of treaties they had before, concerning language laws and a bunch of others. So one can sort of claim the russian side is defending itself from what can be considered an attack against its sovereignty. Keep in mind also, that the east did vote mostly for Yanukovich in the last elections, which the west against him.
As somebody who is going to bootcamp april 15th, shit like this scares me.
when you are as massive as russia and something like what happened in ukraine happens the country is just yours for the picking.
You sound like you speak from experience
Well looks like I was massively fucking wrong when I said Russia wouldn't invade Ukraine, apparently Putin actually is that crazy.
So the uniformed men turned out to be Russian?
they are "mystery men"
all we know is that they sure as fuck aren't ukrainian military
So the uniformed men turned out to be Russian?
They do look it. If they were "self-defense squads" made up of regular people, how is they're so "uniform"? If they were made up of regular people why do they have such great gear? AK-74M's with rail systems, sights, and GP-30 UBGL's, along with Saiga-12K and PKM's.
They do not look like men who raided a military warehouse.

There were political figures (mayor?) involved in the forming of the militias.

militia don't look like this
neither do paramilitary
who ever they are, these are formal units

The comment saying. "You just gonna sit back and take that Murrica?" Made me laugh.
