Parkway near my house that I take to school has a speed limit of like 50mph because its windy and narrow as fuck but most people do 80-85mph and some kids from my school race each other in the morning if they happen to be driving on it at the same time.
I feel like i'm the only one in the US who follows the speed limit. If you tailgate me when I'm doing 35 in a 35 you can eat a dick. Speed limits aren't there to be broken, etc.
as long as you're not in the left lane you're fine, but if you're sitting in the passing lane blocking traffic, you might as well be Hitler.
you are the cause of all road rage in my state granted most speed limits are posted with the 5 over thing in mind, it's kind of a trick on both sides
This is pretty much the first thing my driving instructor told me during my driving lessons. If the sign says 50, you go 55. It's like an unwritten road rule.
As much as I can see the humour in this going 80+ MPH in a 55 MPH zone is a very stupid and selfish thing to do, and someone very easily could have been injured or killed in a crash if they'd fucked up. The limits aren't just there to police fun.
someone could have just as easily been injured or killed if they had fucked up doing 55.
So does this mean no more cross-European races? I don't think you can drive out of the UK without going through France.
as long as you're not in the left lane you're fine, but if you're sitting in the passing lane blocking traffic, you might as well be Hitler.
What does that make the cunts that go fast in the passing lane, then when the two lanes merge back together they slow right the fuck down to like 20km/h BELOW the speed limit?
I can speed as fast I want legally at the german autobahn:rock:
Let's not forget who has the last cackling laugh here.
this does not gives them a right to endanger lives for the sake of a scripted tv show
Do you really think the BBC would fund something that actually endangered peoples lives? It is as you say, completely scripted.
What does that make the cunts that go fast in the passing lane, then when the two lanes merge back together they slow right the fuck down to like 20km/h BELOW the speed limit?
Puts them on the same level as the kind of person that speeds up when you try to pass them. Which is 1 tier below soccer-moms in a 40 ton SUV talking on their cell phone.
So does this mean no more cross-European races? I don't think you can drive out of the UK without going through France.
I wouldn't put it past them to do something like this: [t]http://prankked.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/no-driver-in-the-car-prank.jpg[/t]
So does this mean no more cross-European races? I don't think you can drive out of the UK without going through France.
They can just go via Belgium, the Netherlands or Spain (I think a ferry still goes to Spain?). Although I'd like to see how they enforce this, cross border speeding tickets aren't even possible in Europe. Like if someone from the UK is caught speeding in France there is no way at all (and the DVLA here has refused to partake in anything that allows it) for them to enforce the fine unless they physically stop the person speeding and fine them on the spot. So speed cameras etc are useless in that regard and it is AFAIK exactly the same for everyone in Europe.
So does this mean no more cross-European races? I don't think you can drive out of the UK without going through France.
Its just for 3 months.
Let's not forget who has the last cackling laugh here.
It does pay off to be a real stiff prick.
I fucking hate speed limits. Half of us are more than comfortable doing 85. Speed limits are set at what they are because of all the dodgey people driving (old people/women/dopeys/yobs), not because the rest of us are not capable. We need and extra lane for sick drivers. 100mph cap
Are you guys seriously questioning why they banned a film crew breaking traffic laws? [editline]20th November 2013[/editline]
I fucking hate speed limits.
reminds me of the trip to the states they did where they edited the speedometer to always show 55
Also avatar

The limits aren't just there to police fun.
Depends on the road. On some roads the speed limit is absolutely unreasonable. And you know what? A lot of speed limits ARE there to give the police money. The speed limit in just about every motorway is 70 mph. Are the conditions in every motorway all the same? Abso-fucking-lutely not. My driving instructor told us this when teaching us about adapting our driving to the conditions and he is 100% right, "It is possible go 130 miles per hour in a completely safe manner, if there's no traffic and the road is good and the visibility is perfect... You're messing up though and if the police catch you you're gonna get it, but those who say "Oh, anyone who drives over the speed limit is a maniac!" don't know what they're talking about." You know the Autobahns in Germany? Some of those roads have no speed limit at all. And they're amongst the safest in Europe. They script some of the humour bits, but Clarkson has said that the races and stuff are sacred.
Actually, the ticket want for speeding, it was for not driving in reverse everywhere. [sp]hon hon french joke[/sp]
On the major Ontario highways (the 400-series they're called) the posted limit is almost always 100KM/H. Unless it's rush hour (and everyone is therefore doing ~20 on the highway) you'll find nearly everyone doing anywhere from 110-130. There's been a major push to raise the limits to at least 120 on the 400-series to stop people from getting tickets for going the speed of traffic. Also the general speeding convention is 10KM/H over.
I was in Quebec in the past years and there was this area that was posted for 50Km/h. We went the speed limit. No one else did.
I'm sorry but you really should drive with the flow of traffic regardless of the limit, it's safer
Read that link I posted, it talks about that. And also says that people going 10 under are more likely to have a crash than people going the limit or 10 over.
and they complain about doing the speed limit on our american roads
As much as i love top gear, there's no excuse for this. Ban? maybe to harsh but i don't know french motoring law. And I'm sorry guys, while i agree that the speed limits are stupidly outdated and haven't been amended. The fact is, there are speed limits and there is no excuse for breaking them, you might be the best (or most cocksure) driver in the world but you can NEVER account for the actions of other drivers on the road, especially if they are not expecting you to be speeding because they didn't get the memo. If you speed and get caught (or worse cause and accident), then you haven't got a leg to stand on, so yeah while there's times where i think it's ok to go over, it dont meant i'm right to do so.

The limits aren't just there to police fun.
Actually the limits are really just there to make us feel safer, there have been numerous studies that show that drivers are much safer on highways without a speed limit, as the majority of people spend more time watching the road instead of their speedometer, and besides, most people don't drive faster than they feel comfortable, which is generally around 85 miles an hour max. Modern vehicles are easily able to handle 80-100mph, and so keeping speed limit standards the same is actually somewhat pointless.
Clarkson was clocked at going 87 mph in a 55 mph zone and Hammond was going 88 mph.
Hammond WINS!
Actually, the speed limits are determined by the ADT (average daily traffic) AND how the road is built. Most roads aren't designed for traffic to constantly drive in excess of 55mph. It would prematurely age and fail. Interstates are a MINIMUM 12" of soil cement (cutting cement into the base) capped with a minimum of 12" of high strength reinforced concrete (or an equivalent system of asphalt layers), whereas other highways are just 8 inches of soil cement capped with 4"-6" of asphalt. Regular highways are not designed to handle the load of 18 wheelers flying by at 70-80 mph. With that being said, is it "unsafe" to do 80 on a long empty road? Not in your toyota camry. Is it unsafe to weave in and out of traffic passing lines of cars on a 2 lane road doing 80? You bet your sweet ass it is. You are only as safe as your common sense allows you to be.
