Uhh....News flash, Rich: Steam for Linux is going to send hundreds of thousands of gamers barreling into various distros. Ubutntu is likely going to get the biggest share, hell I'll probably be one of them, but many of them will go to other distros too. Many PC gamers use Windows because they just don't have any other choice. Emulators require crazy amounts of power to run and compatibility issues run rampant even when you do have the horsepower for 'em. You want Linux more popular? Tell them to ENDORSE Steam Linux, not hush up and pretend it doesn't exist.
The neckbeards are just afraid that Linux will be used by normal people who will come to understand it, destroying their ability to feel superior.
The neckbeards are just afraid that Linux will be used by normal people who will come to understand it, destroying their ability to feel superior.
The problem is I want linux to become mainstream. I really hate how rigid windows is and mac is just fucking terrible. Why can't I have an extremely flexible open source OS and the CHOICE to install whatever non-free software I want to. [editline]11th June 2012[/editline] Give me some proper software and I'll move my desktop over today.
Hey guys linux is for nerdes and free programs, do not play games that take years to make on it, why should you pay for them? they should be free, if you have to pay they're taking away your freedoms!
It would be a dream come true for modders if all games were open source but that's all it is, a dream.

The whole idea of free software is to be free as in freedom, not free beer. Please install Gentoo.
yeah if you don't want to make any money at all off programming
You can sell stuff that is released as GPL, you do know that right?
Isn't this guy the Software world's equilevant of a paranoid gun-nut hillbilly gibbering in his self-made nuclear shelter with shelfs stacked with military rations?

Replace his Laptop with a shotgun and a rusty pickup and his red polo shirt with a wife beater.
Yes [thumb]http://stallman.org/Portrait_-_Denmark_DTU_2007-3-31.jpg[/thumb]
A few more rinkles and he would look like the local hobo who walks 10 miles between cities with his hands behind him and a plastic bag.

You generally use WINE, which Is Not an Emulator. It is a Windows compatibility layer. That said, WINE is buggy, far from perfect and for that and more reasons, Windows is currently the best solution for gaming.
Opposing closed-source software being developed on an open source platform is plain selfish, it's not like you have to install steam [editline]11th June 2012[/editline]
Just remember that when he's dead you'll all say he was the greatest fighter for open source.
He's good at proposing open source but takes it too far often
reminds me of facepunch about bf3 and me3 omg spyware
Oh I know. That's why I bitch slapped everyone who complained and tried to make it seem like spyware.
You can sell stuff that is released as GPL, you do know that right?
That is a ruse and you should be aware of it. Yes, you can technically sell content released under the GPL license, but any one of your customers is free to share it with anyone they want and request the full source code. That renders a product essentially unprofitable.
oh no! DRM!
get over it, DRM is here and its not going to leave
I honestly don't see the problem in games being closed source, at least for a number of years. Having an open source game should at least be avoided at first because it offers a way for people to break DRM, maybe find a way to surpass anti-cheat systems for multiplayer games. I do think games should be open-sourced after a few years so the community can take care of it if the developers leave, like what happened with the Freespace series.

Maybe a bit faster than the latest release, though, but what the heck.
I'm pretty sure that just because Steam will work on Linux, doesn't mean the games on it will.
It gives the dev's are slight incentive to port 'em though. Reach more people and get paid some more, though requires some extra effort too. Would most likely depend on how many people who actually WILL be using Steam on Linux for more than just chat.
No, because most people who own Linux have a powerful enough computer to run a decent VM.
Gaming in a VM? Haha.
Freedom isn't free
Gaming in a VM? Haha.
virtualbox guest additions
eh, wanting free and open source development in terms of software isn't such a bad idea. you're pretty much forced into piracy when companies like adobe and autodesk shit all over you with £1,000 + software however, in regards to steam coming to linux this is totally the wrong way to go about things. the guy has good ideas, he just isn't being completely rational about the situation (and it never ceases to amaze me how fp is all 'anti-bullying' or 'against being insulting to fat people' as seen in other threads, but then when gabe's glorious property is attacked everyone has a hissyfit and goes for the personal attacks)
virtualbox guest additions
Go and try to play Crysis or GTA IV in a VM.
This is the type of guy Stallman is:
Stallman recommends not owning a mobile phone, as he believes the tracking of cell phones creates harmful privacy issues. Also, Stallman avoids use of a key card to enter the building where his office is. Such a system would track doors entered and times. For personal reasons, he generally does not actively browse the web from his computer; rather, he uses wget and reads the fetched pages from his e-mail mailbox, claiming to limit direct access via browsers to a few sites such as his own or those related to his work with GNU and the FSF.

Go and try to play Crysis or GTA IV in a VM.
he said gaming he didn't say crysis 2
This is the type of guy Stallman is:
Jesus tittyfucking Christ. I though I were paranoid at times. He's just one step away from being that nutty hobo living under the bridge and preaches about how the world will end in 2012.

I see what you mean, I sure as hell wouldn't buy GPL'd software if I knew it was available free and legally.
