They're banned a White Hart Lane and pretty much every popular place now. Really have no problem with selfies but the stick can be pretty harmful and intrusive
I get the idea of taking photos of yourself and friends, but the whole 'selfie' craze seems incredibly narcissistic for me. Also selfie-sticks on rides are an incredibly retarded idea, holy shit.
wait, so how do you actually take the picture with the selfie stick? is it marketed toward people with arms like Michael Jordan at the end of Space Jam?
Either with a little physical button pusher or with a bluetooth remote usually included with the gadget, neat little idea if you ask me.
I think what's more important is WHY they're bad. 6 years ago it was considered egotistical to take a picture of yourself, now it's the fucking norm to be massively self-absorbed. I blame the rise of Facebook. It's basically selfimportancemongering.com.
im fine with people taking pictures of themselves or just taking pictures in general every so often but there's a certain point to where you should really learn to stop trying to get pictures or videos of everything all the time and just live in the fucking moment i also dont get why people tweet about their breakfast or lunch or whatever. like, who gives a fuck what you're eating? but thats another subject, i guess.
can you post a picture of what you ate this morning? i genuinely want to know what you put in your mouth.
I'm pretty sure posting dick pics is frowned upon by most.
Imagine being so hypocritical that you hate on people for something just as insignificant as the thing you're calling them out on.
realtalk tho why do people hate selfies, I take them all the time, I love myself you should love yourself too. Sometimes I feel shit bc of numerous amounts of reasons but I still love myself sometimes learn to appreciate yourself, selfies are great
The use of the word "selfie" is probably a disgrace to Noah Kalina, who's been taking images of himself ever since just after the start of the 2000s and got himself sort of YouTube famous with that "Everyday" video of his. [editline]8th April 2015[/editline] What the hell happened to just simply calling it "taking a picture of yourself" like we used to up until around 1-2 years ago? I think we can all agree though that selfie sticks are fucking stupid. Take the damn time to REACH OUT with your arm instead of using a stick out of all things to do it.
Are you serious? A "disgrace?" That's putting it all on a pretty high pedastal. And "selfie" has been around for longer than 1-2 years, and it popped up because that's how language evolved. What the hell happened to just simply calling it "sending a text message" like we used to, instead of now just calling it "texting?" This is like an cranky old man complaining how the world isn't how he was comfortanle to, anymore. [editline]9th April 2015[/editline]
im fine with people taking pictures of themselves or just taking pictures in general every so often but there's a certain point to where you should really learn to stop trying to get pictures or videos of everything all the time and just live in the fucking moment i also dont get why people tweet about their breakfast or lunch or whatever. like, who gives a fuck what you're eating? but thats another subject, i guess.
$10 says that people who do this stuff are appreciating the moment just as well if not moreso than you would. Seriously, I don't get how that's so hard to comprehend. It's their way of saying "Hi, world! I'm in this moment, and I'm loving life!" No need to judge them because their method of appreciation doesn't fit your exact confines. Almost every single complaint about "selfies" I've seen is just people mumbling about how they don't like how society changes, groaning how different it is. Suck it up.
Uh huh.
Guests visiting the Walt Disney World theme parks have not only been using the selfie sticks on the rides, but sticking them far out into the attraction. Some have hit other ride vehicles, components of the attraction, or even fallen underneath ride vehicles. The policy of keeping all hands, arms, and other items inside the ride vehicles has been in place at Walt Disney World for decades. The selfie sticks have made this rule come to the forefront and it is going to be enforced much more.
Obviously, Disney's management sees selfie sticks as a liability, for seemingly decent reasons. Rules like this are put into place because Disney don't want to see their rides, equipment, or guests get hurt. I don't know where all the "i hate selfies because they're stupid and nobody cares" stuff comes from. Maybe it's a SH thing :v: As far as holding up a massive rod in the middle of a parade that other people are watching so that you can take a picture of your face in the crowd and blocking others' views of the parade in the process, well, yeah, that's annoying. I thought that was considered impolite in the first place
I think what's more important is WHY they're bad. 6 years ago it was considered egotistical to take a picture of yourself, now it's the fucking norm to be massively self-absorbed. I blame the rise of Facebook. It's basically selfimportancemongering.com.
I love how many dumbs this post got, even though it's completely correct. People have been getting more and more narcissistic since the rise of social media platforms became the norm, but that's to be expected; social media encourages it by making people believe other people out there actually give a damn about them and what they're doing with themselves, and it provides an easy outlet to derive egotistical satisfaction. I mean, there's other factors at play, but social media and the widespread usage of it and technology has undeniably made people more self-absorbed and has made it easier for them to become self-absorbed. This is everywhere today; everyone wants to be a part of something unique to their identity, feed the idea they're special (problem is, they're not; it's a big world), etc. "I'm a certain sexual orientation/race/political party/religion/etc., I like this kind of music/these movies/these books/etc., and everyone else needs to know and care as much about me and what I like as I do and they need to know about how fascinating and cool I am and how interesting my life is on a daily basis". It's crap though. That's what makes me laugh. Until you are actually doing something valuable with your life and something that's got actual collective relevance to your existence in real life to the rest of the world however, that's all it is: fantasy. A certain level of egotism is normal and healthy, but the extent people carry it today is honestly outrageous and unparalleled in its scale in human civilization's history. And that is again mostly due to technology. People who don't get this must not be aware of the changing social and psychological dynamics society as a whole is undergoing anymore; or they just don't care to listen. I don't know. It's not important I guess, it just is what it is. This is how it is though.
It's their way of saying "Hi, world! I'm in this moment, and I'm loving life!" No need to judge them because their method of appreciation doesn't fit your exact confines.
like i said, i'm fine with people doing it every so often, if the occasion is genuinely special. i dont give a fuck about people taking selfies, but when you're in a group of people and we have to stop what we're doing to wait for one or two people in our group to take pictures again and again then it's simply tiring. it's their way of saying, "hi, world! i'm a pain in the ass to hang out with because i can't put my phone away for 5 minutes!" having to rely on a piece of technology to show that you're "loving life" to me is pretty damn sad tbh
like i said, i'm fine with people doing it every so often, if the occasion is genuinely special. i dont give a fuck about people taking selfies, but when you're in a group of people and we have to stop what we're doing to wait for one or two people in our group to take pictures again and again then it's simply tiring. it's their way of saying, "hi, world! i'm a pain in the ass to hang out with because i can't put my phone away for 5 minutes!" having to rely on a piece of technology to show that you're "loving life" to me is pretty damn sad tbh
You're oversimplifying and degrading it because you don't agree with it. Let people live their lives without you painting it as sad or obsessed.
I really doubt there were thousands of sticks that prevented him from even catching a glimpse of the parade. And I certainly wouldn't act like I wasted 200$ (plus food) just because I missed a bit of a parade at the end of an entire day spent at Disneyland.
well some people actually care about the quality of service or material that they spend their hard earned money on. i personally am one of those people but also one of those that hates spending money unless absolutely needed. also it's worth mentioning that i don't hate selfies but more or less those sticks it's just so annoying to look at can only imagine what it'd be like en masse.
Why? Seriously why? I mean ban these selfie sticks, sure. They do pose a hazard to other people, especially on rides like the ones mentioned in the article, but apart from that what possible reason is there to ban selfies? Just because it seems annoying?
psst hey it was a joke
The use of the word "selfie" is probably a disgrace to Noah Kalina, who's been taking images of himself ever since just after the start of the 2000s and got himself sort of YouTube famous with that "Everyday" video of his. Take the damn time to REACH OUT with your arm instead of using a stick out of all things to do it.
Uhhh... It became a hell of a lot more common, so we made a word for it to make conversation easier and less likely to get muddled up? Do you really want the English language to never gain any new words for new or expanded concepts ever again? Yes, it's a 'casual' word right now because it's a neologism. But if it continues to exist, in 300 years it will be the formal word and kids in schools will be writing about Van Gogh's amazing painted selfie. This is Not A Bad Thing, because that's how languages change. Although I'm sure you call that silly made-up word 'sandwich' by a much more proper name, like 'combination of bread and assorted fillings, often accompanied with butter'.
Are you telling me that "selfie sticks" aren't a hoax made up by news websites??
I just dont see the point of taking a picture of something and then having your face block half of the shot.
I'm pretty sure posting dick pics is frowned upon by most.
Poor Richard, why does everybody hate him so much
I took great pleasure in confiscating a selfie stick from a theatre patron a few weeks ago who decided to use it during the fucking show.
Im dreading the selfie sticks presence during this years festival season. Anyone who blocks my view with one is gonna have it wrapped around their face. jk Ill be British about it and tut loudly, not wanting to cause too much of a fuss
I don't have a problem with selfies, unless people decide to have a complete disregard for their own or others' safety just to get a picture of themselves (like the one girl who fell off a cliff because she wanted to take a selfie so much she forgot to look where she was actually standing). Of course, this isn't exclusive to selfies, but it does seem to happen.
The main issue with the hatred for selfies I think we can all agree on, is the types of people who take selfies at inappropriate times and/or places. That shit can be both distracting and disruptive. Nothing wrong with the act itself but it can be a stupid ass thing to do sometimes.
I just dont see the point of taking a picture of something and then having your face block half of the shot.
To prove you were there? I mean i'm not going to carry a pen and paper to write down "Megaman1811 date/time" to prove I was somewhere. My face is good enough
I went to a well known park in my country with lots of sightseeing and noticed how people are too busy making pictures (with or without the infamous stick) of literally EVERYTHING rather than having a good time. You know when you see historical photographs of people wearing silly clothes or whatever and you think 'man, people were retarded back then'. That's 2015 right there.
I took great pleasure in confiscating a selfie stick from a theatre patron a few weeks ago who decided to use it during the fucking show.
Make money by setting the thing on fire, recording it, and then uploading it to YouTube.
But..but...I'm going to Florida next week....
I've never seen a selfie stick in my life and I had no idea they were so common. I've also never run into obnoxious people who take selfies everywhere.
You're oversimplifying and degrading it because you don't agree with it. Let people live their lives without you painting it as sad or obsessed.
no im not. that's exactly what that is. and i do let them live their life, but i'm going to consistently remind them what a pain in the ass it is to wait for them to do their shit, just as the rest of the people in my group (which is the majority) will do who get tired of this. it's sad as fuck. now hold on, let me get a picture of me next to my screen so the world and everyone on my twitter knows i was here. hi world!

Is everyone seriously thinking that people just became interested in themselves over the past 10 years? Small digital cameras (like the ones found on cellphones these days) just made the whole process much simpler. And since most people use smartphones that are very similar in design as opposed to the massive variety of handheld cameras you can find the selfie stick was born, since it can easily be adapted to almost any relatively recent smartphone. I don't know where you are getting all of these facts from, but get down from your high horse before you hurt yourself.
