I've said this once and I'll say it again.
The only direction this country is going is down.
Into the fucking ground.
Just like Russia ruined their relations when they nonchalantly walked into Crimea? Noone would even give a shit.
There is a marked difference between annexing a small region in an area that has historically pretty much always been either part of your country or literally on your border and annexing an entire sovereign nation half a world away thats currently in a pretty large territorial dispute with another Superpower.
Annexing the Philippines and retaining its claim to the south china sea would be a blatant and unjustifiable act of imperialism and it would make the Crimea affair look small amd unimportant in comparison.
America never wanted the Philippines, why would we want them now?
lol taking over a small region is different to taking over an entire country.
They would just need to find the right excuse, and if the population of philippines legitimized it with a referendum why would anyone care.

Im not saying us wants to annex anyone, my point was that if they would do it and had a good enough excuse/reason they wouldnt ruin their diplomatic relations and pretty much nothing meaningful would happen.
:what:
The US didnt "free" Cuba, the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico out of the kindness of its hearth.
I never said that literally anywhere in that post. Congrats for failing to read I guess?
While they were still spanish colonies, US was the biggest export buyer, going as far as to buy 90% of Cuba's exports at one point.
I have said literally nothing that contradicts this
The Cuban Lords werent too happy tough, as the spanish crown kept most of the profits. Which led to two Cuban revolts against the crown that were foiled.
or this
So, the US saw an apportunity. They were tired of having to pay so much for the colonial commodities, and saw the anger of the Cubans as the perfect excuse.

Using an humanitaria front, they demanded Spain to let go of the colonies or else. Spain refused and as most historians agree, the US pinned the Maine's destruction on the Spanish.
They were eager to take control of the export trade, so war ensued, Spain most and the colonies were "freed".
or this
The reality is that they simply changed overlords; once the US had the Colonies, they dropped their front and exploited them to no end, leaving them dar worse than before because of the war damage, removing all of the privileges they had when under Spanish control and hoarding all of the money and exports, leaving them in misery.
We were such overlords that we literally wrote a law guaranteeing them self governance and sovereignty after a ten year period, only for it to be interrupted by the invasion of Japan and being granted in 1946. Yeah sure we retained certain benefits from them (tariffs and military bases) but we never wanted to keep them as US territories. Which is what I said.
Maybe next time you try to jump down someoens throat you actually read what they say.

I was refering to the underlined part, explaining the US real goal.
Also, I dont know what brought you to give such an aggresive and disproportionate response, that borderlines being offensive, when all I did was give facts without a disrespectful like the one you have used.
Maybe you are the one who should read what he types.

It would completely ruin our diplomatic standings with all of Asia, including our allies, and put is into a border dispute with China (South China Sea). Everyone who hates America for imperialism would by rightly justified in their hate by us annexing the Philippines (So a good portion of the Middle East) and would ruin any chance of us having relations with them for the conceivable future. European power's would probably universally denounce us and possibly place economic sanctions on us for doing something thats literally worse then what Russia did (which they got massive sanctions for).
In the end it would universally ruin or reduce our diplomatic standings with pretty much everyone and put us into a direct conflict with China (moreso then we already are)

I know the US's goal in the situation. Nothing I said contradicted what you were saying. I stated that we always wanted to give them self rule. I did not state anywhere in that post that our single or even primary goal in annexing them was giving them self rule.

I have not insulted you beyond pointing out that you put words into my mouth. I haven't disrespected you in any palpable way either. Furthermore your post reeks of passive aggression so its p. hypocritical to call me out on it

I do read what I type. I also read what you type. I also point out that what you type doesn't in any way shape or form refute what I typed.

13-year-old, check.
The US still uses a weapon from 1930 although slightly updated.
But the Garand was state of the art piece of engineering.
The M3 is an open bolt SMG. You can build an open bolt SMG at home with rather common tools, but not a self-loading rifle.
The M3 will run in all conditions, rain or shine, from here to the bottom layer of Hell, and it fires a potent enough cartridge to kill or maim anything that walks on two legs. It's old, it's low-tech, but that's not always a bad thing.
[editline]6th September 2016[/editline]
Hell, we've only just made the first serious alterations to the M2 machine gun in almost a century of continuous service. Sometimes, "old" just means "proven."
From the very beginning our goal in the Philippines when we took it from Spain was to eventually give them self governance and sovereignty. The only people who wanted to keep them were fringe weirdos and blatant imperialists.
Taking over the Philippines now, even through popular referendum, would be such an overtly imperialistic and expansionist thing to do that we'd effectively ruin our relations with literally every nation on Earth.
What about the whole Philippine–American War thing? I'm just curious, you might know more on the subject matter than I do, but that seemed like we weren't very keen on letting them go. I know we gave them their independence after WWII but I got the impression we wanted to make them free on our terms, we even did it on July 4th :v:

We wanted to give them independence but we also wanted to make sure they'd actually stay a coherent entity rather then splitting apart into dozens of islands.
