This is a really intense statement though, because by saying that they shouldn't get offended by it because it's up to them to consider it offensive, you get off scot free with saying anything you want to them. You could call someone a filthy jew then lecture them afterward with how it's their fault that they are upset with the words. What you're saying doesn't just apply to overweight people but to everyone regarding anything.

The answer is it is a poor reflection of the instigator. There is no need to be upset at intolerant people unless they make up the majority. Otherwise just move on with your day and know yourself to be above that.

Being fat has a lot more to do with psychology than anything else, mostly because bad eating habits get associated with emotions. It becomes an addiction, maybe not chemical addictions like nicotine, but certainly something the body will crave. That isn't an excuse, as it is not impossible for anyone to lose weight unless they have a serious physical issue, but it is much harder for some than others. It's like telling an alcoholic to stop drinking.
I hate the rationale that its OK to say things like "retard" and "fat" and "gay (in a derogatory sense)" just because they weren't [I]always[/I] offensive. Like, that's not the point, these things are considered derogatory and rude now and using them as if they aren't is insensitive. Don't blame metabolism. Fat people, on average, have average metabolism. Its entirely possible and fairly common to be fat and have a fast metabolism.
