Justice isn't about committing a punishment worse than the crime. Justice isn't about punishment to begin with. It's about solving a problem with minimal loss. As long as there is an option that involves less than death, it will always be preferable. Even if it takes us to the poorhouse.

You do understand that the justice system does not revolve around giving the criminal the same punishment as the act they committed, right? If you assault someone, you don't get assaulted and beaten as punishment. Again you insinuate that prison is good place to be, with not a care in the world, which could not be further from the truth.
