better make him sleep naked in a cold cell then, wouldn't want him to use his pants to leak classified information now would we

oh dear god his shirt is committing treason as we speak
Ahahaha, treason?
Fuck treason, it's doing what's right for everyone.
Sure, it's treason, but against an evil force. Nothing wrong with that.
That's one opinion on it, yes.
Utterly radical, pointless, and inconsequential, but an opinion none the less.
23 hours on his own? I would be insane by now.
Apparently according to someone who has seen him at various points he is going mad.
He is in military prison and has been charged with treason. Military prison is bad to begin with (military prisons are almost universally significantly harsher than conventional prisons for a multitude of reasons), but treason, for the military, is pretty much the worst of the worse. Basically, death penalty aside, this is the worst we ever do to our own people. Ever. To even reach this level, you have to join the military and freely submit yourself to military jurisdiction, and again have to willingly commit treason.
When was he charged? Last I heard he still hadn't been charged with anything.
Still even if he has been charged, the way he is being treated seems like (unjust) punishment. I thought America was big on the whole "innocent till proven guilty" thing.

I for one propose we lock him up like an animal and put him in the hole while also taking his clothes away, it is the best and only course of action.
Of course, you know, the military probably shouldn't be doing shit the public doesn't know about anyway. It really depends upon a simple choice, Do you want to stick with the militarized culture of military secrets and covert operations that should never see the light of day, or if we should mind our own fucking business and never piss anyone off in the first place, thus making leaks harmless to society in general.
Hell, there would be nothing to leak.

Pretty much
If the government wasn't involved in shady backroom deals and illegal actions there would be no need to suppress people who leak said information using shady backroom deals and illegal actions.

fuckin hypocritical government. makes your people look bad
Free brad manning. The USA should be ashamed. Corrupt fucks
Hey guys, this man MAY have had to do with a major leak of top secret military secrets (Read: Coverups), let's treat him like the next Charles Manson!
(snip) He should not be anywhere near that prison, and not nearly as long as he is convicted for.
And, not to mention, this U.N. diplomat should be given permission to hold the meeting with the prisoner.
What he did wasn't good, he should be in prison/jail. However, he should not be anywhere near that prison, and not nearly as long as he is convicted for.
No, what he did was good and he should NOT be in jail, the people who cover up innocent people dying should be the ones in jail not somebody who releases documents allowing people to see the truth.
No, what he did was good
Explain?
Explain?
One of the things he (allegedly) leaked is the collateral murder video. Something the US government tried to cover up.

I haven't been informed on that part of the story. I should probably rethink my post.
America's stupid

Yay Canada
Why would a UN rep ever get the right to interrogate an imprisoned US soldier?
Why would a UN rep ever get the right to interrogate an imprisoned US soldier?
interrogate? i think it was probably more of a seeing if he was alright thing. a lot of people think this is a breach of human rights and human rights is kinda the un's thing
Hey guys, this man MAY have had to do with a major leak of top secret military secrets (Read: Coverups), let's treat him like the next Charles Manson!
99% of the shit that got released was useless crap.
It's not like he was releasing secret documents just about coverups.
No, what he did was good and he should NOT be in jail, the people who cover up innocent people dying should be the ones in jail not somebody who releases documents allowing people to see the truth.
If he released only the illegal findings, then he would be fine. The United States has specific laws designed to protect people, even government employees, from prosecution if they reveal illegal activity.
He didn't do that. He didn't care. He released it ALL. The overwhelming majority shows nothing illegal or unusual, but still shouldn't be out there for everyone to see.
Again, for like the millionth time, transparent government doesn't work. A diplomat needs to be able to come home from North Korea and say "Kim is a fucking psychopath, but we can leverage his ego to our advantage" and NOT have that get back to North Korea. Why? Because that STOPS DIPLOMACY. Diplomacy requires lying. When two nations hate each other, it is more important than ever to be nice to one another in diplomatic relations, because that is the only hope of avoiding war long enough to resolve your differences.
People who call for a totally transparent government are apparently entirely incapable of even the most rudimentary of critical thought.
miwitawy's feewings
I was trying to speak that aloud to myself for a full 5 minutes until I realized it was supposed to be 'military'
(snip) He should not be anywhere near that prison, and not nearly as long as he is convicted for.

He can visit Manning, but not privately.
I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have a trial first before you're put in solitary confinement like this. And even then I'm pretty sure these conditions are illegal
Do you smell that? I smell hypocrisy.
I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have a trial first before you're put in solitary confinement like this. And even then I'm pretty sure these conditions are illegal
The reason he is in solitary confinement is technically legal. He apparently (according to something he wrote, it was mentioned a few days ago during this) said that if he wanted to he could kill himself with the waistband of his underwear or using his sandals.
Also a few countries (not the US unsurprisingly) class long periods of solitary confinement as torture.
Edit:
Ah I (re)found the thing he wrote. Its here
It's things like this that make me think the US is going to leave the UN.
It's things like this that make me think the US is going to leave the UN.
I wish we would. The UN is worse than useless.
Also, I believe we should start charging them that $10 million yearly rent we should be getting for that prime piece of NYC real estate.

They own the building, pretty sure you can't charge someone rent for something they own entirely. Not to mention the building is (afaik) technically not US soil, in the same way that an embassy has extraterritoriality status.
I keep imagining this poor guy mangled and tortured that they don't want people to see him.. :(
