It's literally a big start menu if you want it to be. I barely use it, and its useful for quickly launching programs and putting whatever I want on it.

He is right though, the parts that are metro and parts that are desktop are so radically different when you open some metro menu it's like a different world. It's not consistent in that sense. Start menu is also not the only thing using metro, many settings windows do now too.

If 8 is just like 7, why upgrade?[/QUOTE] They removed the shine on the taskbar and changed the buttons on the windows and made the Task Manager 100x more useful and responsive. 8 is like 7 the way 7 is like XP. Everything is better and improved, but it's basically the same, just faster.

I love the idea behind Start8, I'm surprised Microsoft didn't think of it. If all people need to do to justify their operating system is to spend another $5 on a feature that was previously removed or just locked away, then that would mean a bunch for the future of OS business practices. Despite the fact the only thing that changed on the desktop side of things is the lack of a start menu that can be fixed by installing 1 free (or not free, depending on the quality of product) program, it's completely like a tablet. The only thing you are actually missing from previous windows versions is the generic music/pictures that are pre-loaded in My Documents and the start menu.

Start8 does look like shit tho, those pictures prove it

I don't see why you'd go back to using the old start menu though :v: I really prefer the new one.

I'm sure Windows 8 is just fine and works well, but it doesn't really offer anything to me that makes me want to get it. Windows 7 is great, and Windows 8 just isn't giving me a reason to upgrade.

I generally upgrade every other release. I recently moved to Linux though, can't say I regret it.

I like W8 because for some reason all my games run smoother and some of the older ones strangely have better compatibility.

If Microsoft could improve searching and move the power options out of the settings bar into a more appropriate location I wouldn't really mind the start screen. What I find odd is the need to split searches into 3 categories when it's fullscreen. The 7 start menu showed groups of things listed all together which was way easier to get to. Hell it doesn't even query C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs anymore when searching.
