Why would you want Microsoft's camera watching you in front of your PC too? You don't jerk off in front of your Xbox, but your PC may be a different story.

They did some copyrights and trademarks right before the Xbox One reveal that involved kinect being used for targeted advertising.

Doesn't mean they're using it without telling you.
I get the whole NSA paranoia (kind off), but this patent really doesn't mean anything. Corporations patent stuff all the time - either because they want to actively use the patent or because they want royalties/ability to sue guys in the future. Third option is they simply want to keep the door open. Considering the way the wind's blowing, I'd say the second or third reason applies the best in this case.
If you can't use your Xbox One when the Kinect is unplugged, what's the point? Wait for the PC version to launch in 2014 or buy the Dev kit for $400. If you want to develop for it, it'd be cheaper to get the dev kit anyway. Sure, the fact that the Xbox Kinect becomes useless when your Xbox breaks sucks, but honestly in what other scenario is this an issue?
lol have fun telling that to hardware hackers.
With the criticism on Microsoft, especially from some political active persons, I wouldn't be surprised if the kinect isn't needed at all.
And as such expect Kinects on ebay galore, since Microsoft doesn't have the brains to only offer it as optional accessory.

You're all kinds of stupid stubborn now.
ah fuck you
I can snap off the lil wedge that keeps me from plugging in these two wires that were made to force me to buy an adapter, I can sure as hell handle whatever this is

Hoping for the best, expecting the worst.
Something tells me a egg head is already studying the design of the kinect two so they can hack the living sack out of it. Also sack is the new official curse word. LIKE OR I WILL THROW PIE AT YOU.

We're not talking about developing games for it, just using it with a computer. No point in paying extra if you already have the Xbox One's Kinect. You can always plug it back in when you want to play a game.
Everyone I see around here is using Kinect for some kind of crazy science and computer vision that involves neither Xbox nor games.

So you're pretty much saying "it sucks but it won't be an issue"? Try reading my first post again because it seems like we agree.

Contrary to popular belief this is not a proper retort. And wouldn't you agree this is how most patents are used - do we need to wear tinfoil hats all the time? They have a patent, that doesn't mean they're necessarily using it.

And are those features that belong to the Kinect? No. They just have a patent for it.
Saying that Microsoft is going to use this patent just because they own it is like saying Rhode Island will create a new town called Faelands just because they own the Kingdoms of Amalur IP.

It's no guarantee they aren't, either, and I personally do not trust Microsoft any farther than I can throw their headquarters right now.

Because Microsoft would secretly gather videos of you. Riiiight. Maybe in the US, wouldn't stand in Europe.
If it isn't in the license agreement and it isn't the NSA forcing microsoft's hand, they wouldn't dare do that kind of shit. Way too high risk compared to the gain.

I am not concerned about being used for the NSA, I am concerned for it being done for profit reasons.
Also Milkandcooki, there is a clause in their ToS that they can change it up anytime. I also don't put it past them with all the advertising on the 360.

this "experience" buzzword is getting on my nerves really fast
fuck you, i'm getting a "great experience" with a 360 kinect plugged into my PC

well you won't even need to buy an xbox one if you want the new kinect for the pc
they're making a separate windows one
So what they're saying that the Xbox One Kinect won't work on Windows, but they're still making one for Windows that will work?
Okay? What exactly is the problem?
Hypothetically, what if you own a gaming PC and an Xbox One? I should be able to own one and switch them between the two systems as I use them. They're pulling an Apple right now by designing their own special chords and adapters.

dick move but it wasn't like i was planning on buying an xbone or a kinect anyways

Dude
what
Because Microsoft would secretly gather videos of you.
If they thought they could use that information to sell me shit you better believe they wouldn't even hesitate. Of course the literal only thing they'd ever see is the underside of a piece of duct tape so they'd never get that information, but they'd still try.

I think he has a healthy suspicion of MS. If rumors larger than conspiracy theory thoughts ever got out about MS using information from the Kinect to get a commercial advantage/spy on the public, to get a competitive edge ever got out, they would sink faster than Enron.
Nothing Microsoft does in the last year or two has been without reason. That reason only being how can we get more money. They tried to control EVERYTHING and saw they would lose money rather than make it by controlling the market and then decided No let's not
I heard the original kinect wasnt going to work with PCs either
god damnit Microsoft, what are you doing
I mean, they're obviously doing this because people didn't want to pay the extra money for a windows kinect, so they just bought xbox ones. The right response would have been to just make the new design universal and stop being asshats, but no, giving the consumer what they want is to be avoided at all costs.
It sucks because kinect 2.0 actually looks pretty neat.
