11 year old attempts suicide to due bullying of him being a bronie.
kid should stay off the internet if he's 11 and thinking of suicide, that said he's prolly hanging out with the wrong clique of friends (bronies)
The harassment was happening at school, not the internet.
That's what the article said, at least.
~echo?~
The harassment occurred in a school environment, not online. Read the thread the story completely.
but how did the thoughts of suicide occur? did his school bullies thoroughly explain it to him? i dont think so.
The internet isn't the only way to pump information into one's brain.
Books, TV, one's own speculation, other people, and regarding the how-to of suicide, then ESPECIALLY bullies.
-edit
Really?
The only place you can imagine getting suicide instructions from is the internet?
Do you live in a locked closet?

why would a 11 yearold kid be reading a book on what suicide is and how would he get his hands on it? bare in mind he's 11 yearsold you idiot. how are 11 yearolds know what suicide is and how to do it either? online research has to be the cause and then you go and rate me dumb because of it, TV could be a factor but i doubt it

Never saw a western with a hangmans noose?
Are you really this dense?
but how did the thoughts of suicide occur? did his school bullies thoroughly explain it to him? i dont think so.
Movies, TVs, Music, Books, Comics, News, it isn't just the internet, suicide didn't become a thing when the internet was around.
but how did the thoughts of suicide occur? did his school bullies thoroughly explain it to him? i dont think so.
Let's see... News stories on suicides, that's television and printed papers, very common, something a person his age would have access too, and be expected to read. Word of mouth, other kids or even family members talking about suicides, possibly anti-suicide "assemblies" held at the school, possibly the bullies outright saying "kill yourself" or "you'd be better off dead". Fictional stories, televised, written, possibly even video games, that showed suicides or death. It's also quite possible that he came up with the idea on his own. As for the actual method a noose isn't too hard to figure out, especially if he already knew a thing or two about knots and understood the basic idea of respiration (as in: if you can't breath you'll die).
what is the purpose of a community of people who just think it's extremely special and amazing for grown men to watch a show designed for girls aged 3-10? the short answer is that those people are just really desperate for attention.
You're so fucking dense.
I remember hearing the expression "down the road, not across the street" in like 5th grade.
I didn't even have my first Commodore VIC20 by then (cause it hadn't been invented yet) so I doubt the internet taught it to the kid that told me.
You're so fucking dense.
thanks for the feedback
Yeah, bullying is terrible, rocks thrown at you(sometimes literally), being constantly followed, make you paranoid.
I ended up becoming insensitive, too, though, which makes taking news easier.
It warms my heart to see Facepunch finally letting go of the whole "Watch MLP? You are human garbage!" bullshit. Well, mostly.
As long as what you like isn't hurting you or others, go for it. No one has the right to tell you what you can and cannot enjoy, period the end.
This kid should never have been pushed to this point.
But if people on facepunch don't lose their shit at the mention of either brony or mlp who will? The rest of the internet stopped giving a shit years ago.

We are that old lady that is whining about everything.

I mean I saw some complete losers who were absolutely obsessed with the show to a point where it was their lifestyle but most of the people I've met are pretty cool dudes to talk to. I belong in the bold when it comes to Madness Combat.
Eh, who cares if boys, girls or that watch it, it's just some harmless cartoon.
Hey I'm with you there. I mean i used to watch the power puff girls when i was like in middle school...i probably even watched it in high, some people just like their channel. Mine was cartoon network so i watched every show.

recently, people who hate bronies are more vocal and annoying than bronies themselves.
you're like homophobic people who constantly talk about gay sex

that point is purely subjective and you're also talking to a complete stranger. I haven't spent any amount of time talking about bronies to anyone. I don't know a single person who doesn't think they're pathetic so there's no need for me to say anything. this thread is one of two occasions I've said anything at all related to bronies, and the other occasion was a thread about a guy who claimed to be fired for being a brony and was clearly lying.
i think people who hate people just for what they like need to take care of their own blatant insecurities.

I think people who can't read but use forums should change at least one of those.
It all comes down to the personal experience really, I got semi interested in the show with my niece(who is 14) and we watched it for like the first two seasons before I lost my interest and during that period we watched I met some really cool people calling themselves bronies, some of whome are still on my friends list on steam.

can we please find an agreement on what "brony" actually means, some dudes seem to be mixing it up with people who simply watch the cartoon and don't draw fanart/write fanfiction/join "brony" groups, meetups and cons/wack off to it/etc
there's no evidence anywhere that suggests that this kid actually calls himself a brony and he's only 11
calling anyone who watches the show a brony is stupid, it's like calling anyone who watches Doctor Who a whovian, anyone who watches Star Trek a Trekkie, and so on.

as far as I was aware brony has never meant a male who watches the show. I've never seen anyone define it that way up until this thread happened. if you automatically got that title just for liking the show that would be pretty dumb.

I don't know man, the only clear definition of brony I've been able to find says otherwise:

I'm not saying Urban Dictionary is trustworthy, but it's better than a subjective definition that you can just make up when you see fit.

struck a chord huh? don't worry bud, you'll know better when you're grown up

let's lay it out then:
brony, in its original definition, is "if you're a male and like the show". I've known this forever, because it's so innocently vague that annoying people actually get upset if you don't call youself a brony simply when you don't mind the show's existence. not hating it =/= being a die-hard fan
as it is carried out, brony is something you have to 'identify' as to show you have a huge interest in it, much like a whovian, trekkie, or Oncest fanfiction author. every fandom has its highs and a shitton of terrifying lows, but given the fact that this goes against (hotly contested as of late) social norms, it's been way more scrutinized and mocked by the general public

when you're dealing with slang, especially slang that originated from the internet, nailing it down to a definitive meaning is extremely difficult, sometimes impossible. but even if we ignore the definition there's still going to be variation in how the word is used and perceived. regardless, nearly all of the stigma attached to the term 'brony' is centered around people who deliberately identify themselves as bronies. nobody really hates people who just happen to like the show.

this is what I like to see, but let's be honest, there's always someone here who'll start shitflinging when it's mentioned, regardless of context. I'm still not sure how people can act surprised when they get banned for saying some of the things I've seen. For instance, this guy got banned for 1 day for some blatantly off-color commentary:
Hey, look at it this way: One less adult brony in the future.
(User was banned for this post ("shitposting/insensitive" - dai))
then with only a few hours left on the ban, made a post in the RC
[t]http://i.imgur.com/YuxbGdK.png[/t]
the problem wasn't "oops maybe I shouldn't wish death on children", it was "oops I should have looked over my shoulder to make sure a cop wouldn't hear me say certain people should die". Then there's the whole "what did you think was going to happen" phase of getting banned for flaming mods in the RC. He decided to ask for a permaban because this forum is "butthurt and shit"
these threads really drag some winners out of the woodwork
I think it's like the term "furry" Technically a furry is someone who likes anthropomorphic animals. But in calling on self a furry, one embraces the true essence of the word, for it isn't merely the appreciation of anthropomorphic art that makes one a furry, but going that step further and making it part of one's identity.

I'm probably gonna sound like a dick, but I call people by what they technically are and if they feel offended because of what they associate with that word then fuck them, it's not my problem.
As far as I can tell, there are a million terms for overly-obsessed fans, but only one for the normal ones.
If you're overly-obsessed with a show and its fan content, to the point of basing your entire identity and set of interests around it, you're a brony/whovian/trekkie/etc.
If you just like the show and perhaps some of the fan-produced content, and have your own interests and identity separate from the show, you're just a standard fan.
While the definitions of the fan-type terms were clearly meant to encompass all fans of that particular show, the meanings have clearly shifted and usually will shift so that the terms primarily describe the ones who are insanely-obsessed. As it is, attempting to identify using one of the fandom-specific terms has become akin to saying "this creative work is the only facet of my identity, and I am obsessed with it", and perhaps it's not so unjustified.
