• Japan Nuclear Situation "Out of Control"
(The same thing happened at Chernobyl didn't it? All but a handful left I mean)
As far as I remember 2 people (one of them that pushed the button and his colleague) were ordered to go home but stayed behind and later went for medical help
Wasn't it out of control from the start? I'm seriously not worried until it actually goes into melt down and blows up.
It was under control for a very short period until the tsunami flooded out the backup generators, then they could not keep the reactors cool and they started failing one by one.
This is really irresponsible reporting. If it turns out to be a level 4 incident as Japanese officials say it is they will have caused unnecessary panic amongst many populations. It's not fair to release speculation in this format. IMO I really don't see this situation getting any worse that it already is and anybody who thinks the incident at Chernobyl can be likened to this has pretty much no idea what is happening at either of these events. The initial cause is different, the staff and their conditions are very different (poorly paid/educated soviets vs regular Japanese engineers), the reactor designs are different, safety protocols are obviously different and will thus have caused engineers to manage and maintain this plant to a higher standard. It's definitely not impossible but so is me catching and dying from malaria when I go to bed tonight.
Now. Or in the near future.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Fukushima I'd buy it. (User was banned for this post ("STALKER Joke." - Dav0r))
INES 6 now, it's official.
Blowout soon, fellow stalker! (User was banned for this post ("Stalker joke" - JohnnyMo1))
wow
I knew this wouldn't end without consequences such as this.
I don't think it's that bad. If the radiation were that bad then they'd be to sick to work productively.
It's not an issue with them getting sick now. They're all just at high risk of developing cancer within the next few years if exposed to too much radiation.
It's not an issue with them getting sick now. They're all just at high risk of developing cancer within the next few years if exposed to too much radiation.
I don't think that's grounds to use the term walking dead men.
INES 6 now, it's official.
IMO, it doesn't look like this incident meets the criteria for a 6, much less a 5.
why is there no megathread for earthquake-tsunami / fukushima related events in Japan yet.
To be honest, it isn't bothering me at all. This is kind of a subject that I want to remain updated on, and individual threads detailing new events pertaining to this subject are easier to sift through. Not exactly disappointed that threads like "cocaine found at Kennedy Space Center" or "Bon Jovi bitching about Apple" are being pushed out of the way for these.
Why do people on the other side of the Planet keep deciding they know better than the engineers, and crucially the IAEA on-site? If things were worse than they were letting on then the IAEA would have made the international community aware of a cover up.
IMO, it doesn't look like this incident meets the criteria for a 6, much less a 5.
That's what they're calling it man, I'm not in charge of INES rankings. Also, it doesn't look like anything, for all we know all 6 reactors could've melted down by now.

I know what you mean, though.

Also, it doesn't look like anything, for all we know all 6 reactors could've melted down by now.
Well it'd be absolutely spectacular if all six cores melted, because that absolutely proves that the counter measures outside of the casings are really good, but the INES has pretty clear criteria and it doesn't look like the general public is severely at risk which is required for a level 5. And Japan is saying four, and I trust those guys because they have actual personal directly on the facility.

Remember the ones lying about how everything is fine are the ones that are gonna be evacuated the firsts in case of a major problem. They got to save their company and their money first. Plus remember how said engineers informed the world that the situation was partially under control after Reactor 1's explosion. [editline]16th March 2011[/editline] Not even talking about governments, trying to avoid any panic.
Go watch CNN, brosef.
What makes CNN the definitive authority over the situation? Japan and the IAEA say four.
What makes CNN the definitive authority over the situation? Japan and the IAEA say four.
Japan's been lying about the whole thing from the start, and IAEA obviously changed it to 5, CNN's not making up INES ratings.
Fuck, I live in Washington, if the fallout drifts over here... Anyone know of a good place to buy high quality, working, NBC suits? Money is no object.
So apparently some reporter said that it could be raised to a category 7.
2 groups of people that should not be a source for anything regarding what is going on: Politicians US news networks
But yeah.
So apparently some reporter said that it could be raised to a category 7.
If the fire gets to the spent fuel rods, apparently it could end up being worse than Chernobyl.
Why don't we have more categories? Chernobyl was bad obviously but it was hardly the worst imaginable nuclear disaster.
Update
tokyo electric power co. (tepco)—the company that runs the fukushima nuclear pants—says that 70% of the fuel rods have been damaged on the reactor 1 and 33% have been damaged on reactor 2. "the reactors' cores are believed to have partially melted" says the japanese news agency kyodo.

Why don't we have more categories? Chernobyl was bad obviously but it was hardly the worst imaginable nuclear disaster.
They're not gonna make something higher than 7, i.e. Chernobyl-category until something *knock on wood* worse comes along.
Japan's been lying about the whole thing from the start, and IAEA obviously changed it to 5, CNN's not making up INES ratings.
Source on IAEA, and CNN can speculate all they want. News agencies haven't been reliable in this situation either, all of them are screaming Chernobyl.
Category 8: Fukushima
