How can this explode like chernobyl when it isn't the same type of reactor? I don't really see how this could be worse than that.
So what kind of pills should I buy and where can I get them? ( West Coast U.S. here ).
This is no place for logic or thought.

There are no magic "anti radiation" pills
You can just drink a lot of vodka though I bet :smug:

Iodine pills. And take a shot glass worth of hydrogen peroxide every few hours.
Welp time to go down to Rite aid and stock up on Rad X.
They evacuated them because the radiation levels spiked to 6 millisieverts for a few minutes then dropped back down to between 2 to 3 millisievert.
They are going back in aswell, they were just worried the radiation was leaking from reactor 3 which could have gotten worse.
Gah, I hope Hawaii doesn't get radiation. I'm moving there in 4 weeks... :gonk:
Iodine pills. And take a shot glass worth of hydrogen peroxide every few hours.
I can buy these over the counter correct?
There is talk of an apocalypse and I think the word is particularly well chosen [...] I hope that it doesn't happen, but we can't rule out that the worst case scenario [a complete meltdown a la Chernobyl] happens in the next few hours or days.
Wow people really love to blow anything related to nuclear energy out of proportion. There isn't automatically gonna be a freaking cloud of radioactive dust just because a meltdown happens.

when i was reading that all I wanted to say was "could you be more blatantly sensationalist?"
Iodine pills. And take a shot glass worth of hydrogen peroxide every few hours.
It's potassium iodide, not iodine.
My mom said this could be worse than Chernobyl, is that true?
Why don't we have more categories? Chernobyl was bad obviously but it was hardly the worst imaginable nuclear disaster.
I believe you can't really get worse than open clouds of ungodly radioactive dust spreading over all of europe.
True, you could have gotten more clouds of radioactive dust, but it's still the same scenario. Just empowered.
My mom said this could be worse than Chernobyl, is that true?
neigh i say
My mom said this could be worse than Chernobyl, is that true?
Your mom is an idiot(which is probably why you're so hard to argue with though that's neither here nor there).
My mom said this could be worse than Chernobyl, is that true?
Could is a useless word. For all we know, Kim Jong could decide this world is not worth bothering with annoying anymore. Then it could be even worse. But we don't know, and being sensationalist right now is only going to hurt us.

She probably isnt an idiot, just she might be watching CNN or BBC who tend to make everything seem apocolyptic

Yeah, this
This will probably be stupid as hell to say, but why not dump a ton of liquid nitrogen on those reactors?
This will probably be stupid as hell to say, but why not dump a ton of liquid nitrogen on those reactors?
i have no idea why this is stupid
but i have a feeling it is
My mom said this could be worse than Chernobyl, is that true?
The thing that made Chernobyl particularly bad is that the massive hydrogen explosion ruptured the unshielded reactor core itself and threw radioactive particles, including actual nuclear fuel, into the atmosphere which rained down across the world. The Fukushima reactors have sturdy steel/concrete shells around them, so unless they somehow break any serious radiation leaks will be confined to the reactor building. Considering those shields withstood a 9-magnitude earthquake and a tsunami, I'd say the general population of Japan is unlikely to be exposed to fatal radiation doses.

And how would you go about dumping this liquid nitrogen, Mr.Science?
And how would you go about dumping this liquid nitrogen, Mr.Science?
Fire trucks. Very red fire trucks.
Last I checked it wasn't liquid nitrogen that they dump in the reactors it's Boron acid or something like that.

Actually, there are 6 reactors, 3 are potentially Chernobyls, and 3 which are covered, and could either become Chernobyls or could end up being Three Mile Islands.

isn't the other main reason chernobyl was so bad was the graphite cooling element that then turned to smoke that carried radiation with it?
I just don't see how this could ever be as bad.

Maybe, but those reactor cores are freaking huge. Don't know in what quantities liquid nitrogen can be produced. Chances are too that the thing is so hot that even if you dumped a container load of it it would evaporate within minutes, and the core would just get warm again. You'd have to it continuously.

Damn, and I thought that would freeze it for sure.
