This will probably be stupid as hell to say, but why not dump a ton of liquid nitrogen on those reactors?
Let's dump really cold stuff on really hot things! That won't cause massive amounts of damage at all.
isn't the other main reason chernobyl was so bad was the graphite cooling element that then turned to smoke that carried radiation with it?
I just don't see how this could ever be as bad.
That too. There are tons of reasons another Chernobyl won't happen again.
Except, the fact that several reactors of the same type as those in Chernobyl are still in use in three locations in Russia.
Let's dump really cold stuff on really hot things! That won't cause massive amounts of damage at all.
Unless I'm mistaken, wouldn't that make the zirconium casing even more brittle?
Let's dump really cold stuff on really hot things! That won't cause massive amounts of damage at all.
Good point.
How about instead of dumping really cold stuff on really hot things! We dump really hot things on really hot things to cancel it all out. Bring in the thermite.

Do me a favor and give me fair warning to leave the continent if you're ever within fifty miles of a reactor.

Stick glass in freezer, once frozen, take out, poor boiling water into glass.
Please hold glass so you can enjoy third degree burns on your hand when it shatters.
Same goes for the inverse.

Nah, bro, you gotta dump even hotter things on those already hot things.
Wheel out the other Tsar Bomba Russia, it's time has come.

Chernobyl
Last I checked it wasn't liquid nitrogen that they dump in the reactors it's Boron acid or something like that.
Yeah. Boron absorbs neutrons.
I'm looking at a picture of a TV stream showing a picture of a man holding a picture of the reactor.

person who took this picture deserves a pay bonus for even considering to go that close and take a picture.
When was that taken?
As staff were evacuating from the 4 reactors.
Have they mentioned the risk of the radiation spreading overseas? :ohdear: Be strong Japan.
I hate the way media is blowing this up to make it seem that the plant is about explode and take half the world with it.
On a similiar note, I wonder if I should be worried that the UK has had more level 3,4 and 5 accidents than anyone else, or so it seems.
I hate the way media is blowing this up to make it seem that the plant is about explode and take half the world with it.
Nobody is acting like that. All I hear about is how it's going to setback the world's acceptance of nuclear power.
Nobody is acting like that. All I hear about is how it's going to setback the world's acceptance of nuclear power.
I was exaggerating, but the media, as it normally does, is overplaying the risk involved, which plays straight into the point you made.
EDIT: The BBC is also reporting another earthquake in eastern Japan on it's live feed, although it doesn't seem to be a serious one.
There is a huge risk involved.
So far it seems that that the area around the reactor won't be usable for a few 1000 years. And having said that, it has the potential to get worse if more radioactivity leaks.
That to me... sounds bad.

Timespan really depends on the radioactive isotopes are emitted - some, such as iodine, have a half-life measured in hours.
fell sorry for japan first the freaking earthquake then an huge tsunami who erase most of the island and finally 3 nuclear plants who blowout DAMN!!!
Timespan really depends on the radioactive isotopes are emitted - some, such as iodine, have a half-life measured in hours.
Yep, however Caesium-137 has a half-life of 30+ years.
And that has already been detected around the plant.
According to those graphs tsunamis kill infinity people when they first happen but it's okay because the nuclear reactor will kill negative infinity people and cancel it out
The initial radiation cures cancer and brings people back to life and as for the tsunamis
Chernobyl
It's a damn good thing that I'll never be a mod because I would start giving day bans for this chernobyl scare bullshit, then probably get demodded for moderator abuse.
Why is it that nobody is getting the point that this is not a chernobyl-like situation, let alone anything we can yet even compare to chernobyl?
Yes, we are now worse off than three Mile Island by a magnitude of three however we are still very much below any scenario where quantities of radioactive particles (as in not contaminated steam) would be ejected from the plant and into the surrounding area, let alone the jet stream where it would then be carried across the pacific.
Calm the fuck down. Understand that you need to stop running the wort case scenarios (or your deams coming true is you are a stalker/post-apocalyptic fan) through your heads. This will all be over within the next week at the soonest and in a month none of us will remember this save for a wikipedia article and possibly a movie (There's no way the Japanese won't at least try to tap into the potential to make a movie out of this) so stop biting your fingernails.
Edit: If a movie is made, I fucking called it.
Finally.

Read a few of my posts back a couple pages, it could be 3 Chernobyls.

And the difference between the two is what, other than the graphite and water moderators?
None. Both are having the same problems, just the situation at Fukishima is progressing a lot slower.
We could see another build up of pressure after the rods have melted... and what happens when there's a build up of pressure, as we've seen?
Boom!
The situation isn't good, and it's very possible for a Chernobyl like situation to occur again. Stop regurgitating crap.

how can the main reason radioactive material spread for chernobyl apply here when that material isn't there?

can't explain that.
A brief spot of good news from the BBC:
0702: Japan's NHK TV confirms that the evacuation order for nuclear plant workers has been lifted

0719: A helicopter used to pour water over one of the reactors has taken off, Japanese TV reports.
