PC Gamer: Let’s stop calling ourselves the “PC Master Race”
So when they directly insult them and compare them to radical ideologies - they should expect some backlash.
I don't particularly like the article, as I think this kind of thing should die out on its own, but the "comparison" makes sense.
The author points out that it can give connotations to white supremacy (not that it is exactly the same, mind you, but that it makes people consciously or subconsciously connect them, especially if they are not familiar with the term). This is demonstrably true as the author himself somehow made that connection, so arguing that it can't make people connect the two doesn't make any sense.
And even if you think it doesn't matter that the author made the connection himself (for example if he was just looking for a ridiculous comparison), it seems illogical to assume that the term "master race" doesn't make people any people at all think of white supremacy (especially if they are unfamiliar with the "PC Master Race" term from before).
Maybe a slight clarification: the author doesn't compare people who use the term jokingly to nazis, but he's saying that the term "master race" makes people think of white supremacy, nacism, etc. and that's something he doesn't want to be associated with.
How is the solution to "People might take it seriously" to stop using the word altogether? The people who take it seriously are morons and the real solution is to just say people who do take it seriously are morons, by just letting them have the word you ruin the joke and let them win by having everyone take it seriously now.
Playing a computer also isn't a race, so it doesn't matter if anyone thinks it's Nazi related, the joke is still obvious.

That logic is like the people who fight tooth and nail against socialized healthcare because they immediately associate it with socialism/communism. It is a valid association, but still dumb.
Thinking "PC Master Race" is related to nazism because you made the connection and didn't bother to look into it is dumb, yes. I've never denied that and I don't think the author did either.
The problem is there's plenty of people who are going to make the connection because there's plenty of dumb people in the world, and the author is arguing that he doesn't want to be associated with it because people will make that connection.
Arguing for social healthcare is something I would do because for me the importance of it would outweigh the negative connotations of some people, and it's important enough that I could bother trying to explain the actual meaning to them.
With "PC Master Race" I still wouldn't care much for the opinion of people who uncritically associate it with nazism, but the effort to try to explain it to them wouldn't be worth it because associating with PC Master Race wouldn't give me any benefit to begin with (as I think it's nothing more than an old and frankly unfunny joke).
the problem with trying to not be associated with something negative is that idiots can just invent negative things to associate you with
It doesn't matter how hard you try. Trying to appease people who aren't thinking logically isn't possible, and worrying about what they think is silly.
i mean for fucks sake, anything can have a tenuous line of assumptions made connecting it to nazism, or satanism, or communism or whatever boogeyman is popular at the time. That is the inherent nature of assumptions.

I don't think dumb assumptions need to be catered to. Especially when it comes to a joke. Humour is by definition disrespectful and sometimes offensive.
While writers should most certainly never use the term, that's about as far as this should go. The term has never bothered me, because any time I see or hear "PC master race", the only thing that comes to my mind is a badass gaming PC that decimates all.
If you personally don't like the term, that's fine. Nobody is forcing you to use it, nor is anyone forcing you to be labeled under it. In fact, nobody is forcing you to take part in any "gaming community" anywhere. At the same time, others should be free to use whatever terms they want. That's their choice.
But to say that the use of a term keeps people away from getting into console gaming because of an out of context reference to nazism is pure hogwash. If the reason someone doesn't want to play games on a PC is that some other people who do use a politically incorrect phrase, then I would argue that they were not that interested in playing games on a PC to begin with.
but w/e ill leave you guys be to circlejerk about how hes part of the evil sjw illuminati and being paid by ubisoft to write this or whatever
This is a combination of lack-of-capitalization from thisispain and the dismissive attitude of the sanius squad + the sarcasm of maxofs2d all rolled up with the susceptibility of a real tumblr user. All you're missing is a derisive "????" at the end of each post now.
You didn't have to start dropping awful posts everywhere to get your point across, you could have posted a list of arguments backed with sources, we'd have done the same and you'd have lost gracefully if you wanted.
Apparently people are still pretending that there was some evil conspiracy of "gamers are dead" articles that the illuminati released to soften the minds of the public around the time GG started.
In reality it was closer to three people just asking about what a "gamer" really was.
How is 14 separate articles "3 people"
i dont need statistical data to prove that saying you're in any sort of master race is fucking asinine lmao
but w/e ill leave you guys be to circlejerk about how hes part of the evil sjw illuminati and being paid by ubisoft to write this or whatever
Are you fucking off back to tumblr to lol about it now like most people who act like 10 year old white knights? You seriously hop into any thread related to gaming journalisim and go "LMAO FUCKIN NERDS CRYING ABOUT GAMES, GAMERGAY AM I RIGHT" and then when someone calls you out for your shit you go "WELL IM GONNA GO LEAVE YOU LOSERS ALONE HAHAHA". Its amazing how blind someone can be when there's mountains of evidence proving conflict of interests but you still sit on your throne saying its just videogames, and call anyone who says you're ignorant a manchild.
PCGamer has apologized and disclosed Tyler Wilde's COI.
Hopefully this means we can get back to focusing on the term "PC Master Race" and less on the author of the article.
pc gamer did the right thing
back to why this article is taking a joke seriously

You know, every time you do this holier than thou "HA I'm so hip and cool, you're all lame nerd virgins who don't leave their mothers house! LOL 'it's about ethics!!!'" shit, it's doing the opposite of what you think it's doing.

That's pretty much on point. Thanks for helping us so much, RichyZ!
That's pretty much on point.
I always try to be.
After all, I am the future face of the WWE.
i honestly feel like people were focusing too much on his article, which is honestly pretty innocuous. that the change in disclosure policy came out of it is far more important than one dude's opinion on a dumb meme
All the tweets calling gamers to be executed surely was nice.
I don't think those people would necessarily be the same people who were writing the articles. Wouldn't associating those people with the article writers be just as bad as associating people who send death threats with Gamergate supporters?
"hmm i wonder if pc gaming is right for me"
*goes to reddit*
"ha yeah fuck that community ill just stay on console where most people are just quiet and dumb instead of loud and dumb"
"How very gauche these PC fellows are! I shall remain on XBox Live, then - and enjoy more pleasant conversations. Civilisation, thy name is xXx420TylerCOD99xXx."
do we really have to start a witch hunt whenever someone writes an article with an opinion you don't agree with
i mean yeah yeah it's great and all that you're trying to stop corruption in journalism, but this is not the place.
They shouldn't be fucking writing an opinionated piece unless it's a review, which is based on opinion. I don't go to gaming journalism sites to go look at their personal blog.

I don't get it is this satire or
because claiming console gaming communities are quiet is hilarious

no, instead we have writers claiming gamers are dead which backfired. Now theres another writer saying PC gamers are dead. Now they kicked a beehive and are wondering why so many people are pissed at them.
fite me nerds
The general gist of this shit is, stop caring about what other people are playing their video games on, just fucking play video games and stop making it some kind of "us vs. them" for the different platforms. It's so fucking petty that it actually ruined a joke before the joke was even understood.
Nerds? We're not the type of insecure boring virgins to attack a type of community dedicated to gaming.
You should think about who fits that role. And it's the person standing in this room calling everyone a nerd. You may think of me as pissed with your posts, I guess? But y'know, I could've summed this up better.
I reckon we should all get along here. I mean, we're gamers right? Regardless of what you play on, it doesn't matter. Better just to ignore someone saying "PC MASTERACE" instead of having a fit about it.
no, instead we have writers claiming gamers are dead which backfired. Now theres another writer saying PC gamers are dead. Now they kicked a beehive and are wondering why so many people are pissed at them.
I think writing off this:
When a pizza delivery arrives it’s warm and comforting and I eat so much because dang, it’s melted cheese on bread, and everyone feasts together in beautiful gluttonous harmony. But after we’re stuffed, walking the empty pizza box down four flights of stairs to the garbage just seems so hard, and so it sits on the kitchen counter for a day, maybe two, and then it gets propped up next to the recycling, and then I take out the recycling but the pizza box is all awkward and greasy so I just leave it. And after too long that delicious feast becomes embarrassing detritus that says “this place is inhabited by a puerile slob.”
And that pizza is internet humor. No matter how much we enjoy them at first, all jokes mold, but damned if they don’t stick around anyway. Lolcats, rage comics, doge-speak, saying “my wife” like Borat, references to anything popularized on Newgrounds—it’s time to bag all that up and send it to the landfill. And I’d love for the phrase “PC Master Race” to join them. It’s the moldiest of all.
as "PC Gamers are dead" is really missing the point of the article.
So wait, if PC gamers are dead, shouldn't the moniker be changed to something fitting? Oh, I know. PC Skeletal Soldiers. The PC SS. I don't see any way that could be spun in a negative or offensive way.
That was sarcasm.

PC Super Skeletons.
PC Super Skeletons.
PC Spooky Skeletons, we might as well go the whole 9 yards with the meme implementation. For spite, specifically.
Also, the article is just dumb because it assumes that Memes are manufactured and controlled. Clearly someone needs to (ironically, due to it being a console game) play MGS2.
