why
because non-white is naming people after what they aren't and coloured has olden day racist connotations i guess
I am so damn tired of people with triggers acting like it's everyone else's fault that they get triggered.
because non-white is naming people after what they aren't and coloured has olden day racist connotations i guess
So what you're saying is they're both wrong.
okay maybe i'll respond to this one, that's easy for you to say, yes in a perfect world we would be looking at each other just as humans, but we live in a world where minority groups are marginalized and treating unequally, and i'm afraid just ignoring it isn't going it solve it
I'm a Gay, Mixed Race, part asian, part european who is descended on one side from Jews and has a Brody nose. And lived in the Southern USA for most of my life.
I'm fully aware about the plights of discrimination.
So what you're saying is they're both wrong.
what? no i'm saying that people of colour is accepted as an appropriate way to refer to: people of colour

alright, but you're still a bit naive about how to solve discrimination, it isn't from everyone just suddenly seeing each other as humans (sure it'd be nice if it could work like that)
what? no i'm saying that people of colour is accepted as an appropriate way to refer to: people of colour
It sounds like a sub category.
to add impact and context
the slave's situation is so extremely negative that the player's financially-motivated response to him seems that much more ridiculous
the idea that you can also "rape someone to sleep" also functions as a joke, because you can't do that
Depends on the type/definition/circumstances of the rape. Nearly anything can become "normal" given time. You wouldn't believe the amount of pain you can fall asleep in, and there're the levels of Stockholm syndrome, basically being trained like an animal with reward; punishment; avoidant reaction inducing stimuli; pain; manipulation; threats; gas lighting; having the person you unavoidably find yourself spending time with changing completely in an instant in order to reward/punish you. The constant addition of new conditions/ways/methods of control. Life is weird, and some people are just downright evil. Rape is torture.
It sounds like a sub category.
I guess you have trouble calling a black guy a black guy then?
alright, but you're still a bit naive about how to solve discrimination, it isn't from everyone just suddenly seeing each other as humans (sure it'd be nice if it could work like that)
I don't protest or give ways to solve discrimination, since my upbringing also gave me hostilities. Not because of learned patterns from others, but from interaction with and involvement with minorities and the poor.
Some people are just shitty sometimes. Be they where they are, and sometimes you can only help so much. I'd love if everyone could get out of poverty, but when the system is literally weighted and scaled to give you a boosting hand and you don't take advantage of it, but complain about that very system, I don't respect that.
I don't see everyone from poorer areas as that. Some of them have hidden talents, but don't use them because they're afraid to be different. It's a defensive mechanism.
That's just my view on some things. Be they just a view. I don't champion that I understand discrimination, just a side of the coin and my observations on the other.
It's all a reaction to a reaction to a reaction. I hope the gears on the wheel of oppression break off into several pieces and go different directions, rather then spinning endlessly.
Every new generation oils it less, so hopefully it'll be somewhat brushed aside in the future.

If I'm pointing out a person? Nope.
But being like. Oh my black friend. Nah he's my friend.
you're being silly
This whole debate is just going all over the place. We started with a PAX related thing and now are talking about skin color.
Diversity.
I think the US tries too hard to not offend anyone, and the only result this has brought is that people get offended at the most minor things, because it's an easy way to get attention.
When you raise children, one of the lessons you elarn them is that can't just have anything they want. Banning or changing things to stop people from getting offended is like buying your child whatever he asks for in order to stop it from wanting stuff. It's insane and it's counterproductive.
I'm not sure about the rest of the world, but in the Netherlands the idea is that as a person you develop a shield to the outside world, realizing that getting offended at things is a personal experience and not a problem the rest of society needs to fix. I can't get by an hour in my day without getting or feeling offended about something, but like 99% of the world population you deal with it. The world doesn't revolve around you. I think that's why the Dutch are thought to be so tolerant. It secretly isn't tolerance at all. We've just turned apathy into an artform. You will not find people who give less of a shit than the Dutch.

I personally blame the 24 hours news cycle in America. Were taught to be outraged at every scandal, and there's one a day.
It's exhausting.
What is the Q in LGBTQ mean, every time they use that acronym they add another letter and I'm struggling to keep up with it.

That's pretty much how it should be. It's not the duty of the world to make things sanitised for you and its near impossible anyway. Simply being offended gives no special rights and if someone has serious triggers, seek help, don't try to change everyone else.
The ability to have thick skin, handle a bit of pain, and take responsibility for yourself rather than pushing it on everyone else, are key parts of maturity and growing up.

Queer probably, but don't worry because even they have trouble keeping up, so they invented things like trans* so they don't leave anyone out.
"Diversity lounge"
What an awful name, it sounds like they're segregating people or something, I bet bars during the 50's had "diversity lounges".
It's also hilarious how they throw women in the same pool as mentally ill, LBGT and disabled people.
Queer.
That means you've decided for some reason that you're neither gender or you're both. It's a confusing thing because it sounds like they can get offended if you just use any pronoun.
It can mean queer or questioning, to which the later makes sense given that queer means strange and was used as a slur.

the only time people get offended over use of the wrong pronoun is when someone uses it again and again even when they know it's wrong

What the fuck is a person of non-color though?
[editline]18th December 2013[/editline]
I am not versed at all in the tumblr, PC, SJW and whatever culture, but 'people of color' to me sounds way more racist and discriminatory (and a throwback to the segregationist era) than anything.

people of colour, it's just a way of referring to people that aren't white, it's better than non-white because that's calling them something based on what they're not, and it's better than coloured which has too many racist connotations. and well i don't know man, it's what's accepted, i'm not gonna call people something they don't feel comfortable being called

maybe because within the 'gamer' community women are disparaged just as much as those other groups?

How many girl gamers do you play with?
I can't tell if I think this is a good idea or not, but reading that did make me smile. PAX feels like a kinda weird place to put it though

1 i guess

I'm not saying calling them non-white is any better, but how is equating white people with non color and lumping everyone else into a category of 'people of color' acceptable? Especially when you consider no one is white enough to be considered 'of no color'.
I'm not saying calling them non-white is any better, but equating white with non color is not really any better, especially when you consider no one is white enough to be considered 'of no color'
it's just a non-offensive way of referring to people that aren't white because white people (in western countries at least) are the privileged majority. i'm sure you wouldn't say people of colour in africa or asia or whatever
What the fuck is a person of non-color
so when they say "for people of color" they're saying "for non-white people"
not cool man
