EA/Origin: If you don't log in for 2 years we'll delete all the games you paid for
What about console games you purchase digitally
It's not so much entirely digital versions that piss me off. It's the computer games you buy on a CD like Spore and when you install it it goes, "lol now we need to connect to the internet to validate your game so that you can finish this installation and play it!"
If you buy a physical copy of an xbox 360 game, for example, I don't think you ever have to go through that shit.

The only example I can think of are those single use online codes that make it so you can't just buy the game preowned and save money, but that isn't really a 'bad' thing.
Not to be a dick, but you are a prime example of what I just said. Valve have a contract/ToS term that states they can remove all your games whenever they feel like with with no arguing or warning, but of course they would never do that. If, two years after Origin comes out, somebody who hasn't used their account in two years finds it deactivated and EA refuse to reactivate it (which they actually said they would) then fair enough. However, at the moment the hate is purely against EA.
Now I do understand your perspective completely, but let me tell you that this is based on experience between both companies, Valve could do something like it, but they would never do it like you said because it's Valve! Who has been good to their fanbase for years.
EA on the other hand is a rather corporation that is horrid in their game-making, not only this but how they buy developers and put them to work publishing their product, and most of the time when EA has taken a corporation EX: Maxis, It's turned to shit.
who says you aren't? I know it'd be very odd if they do so. But still, they just tell that you're fucked if they do go out of business
But EA is perfect and will never go out of business, EA said so! :downs:
If it does wipe your games, you can contact support and they'll re-open the account for you.
Who gives a shit, they shouldn't be deleting what you paid for in the first place
Fuck EA and fuck anyone who doesn't care, you're the reason consumers are constantly being shafted

It actually doesn't get deleted. Your account info gets stored in a sort of cloud system.
And yes, I don't actually care. Because if you didn't read the fine print in the first place, you shouldn't use their service.
I really don't understand why this is a big deal. Just set it up to log in automatically, then even if you don't play any of the games for two years, you'll still have them. Besides, if you don't log in to your account for two years to play any of the games, how likely would it be that you'd ever log in again?

Misleading contracts are illegal in many jurisdictions, the consumer actually isn't expected to hunt through the "fine print" for obscure details

Hurr if you don't use your car for two years how likely would it be that you'd like it to start ever again

I've got loads of old games on my shelf that I don't even touch for large periods of time.
So EA's basically saying when you BUY one of their games, for the full $60, you only buy an 'entitlement' to it, that they can refuse to give you or revoke it at any time?

Agreed. And what if you're not able to log in for two years? Lets say you have to go jail, or got into the army, or just want to play your god damn games without logging into the service.

You could always contact EA support for reactivation if your account does happen to be disabled after two years. They're not going to "delete" it. It's just a few kilobytes of data, it's simpler for them to set a "disabled" flag that can be removed at any time by being contacted by the account holder than deleting the account.
Logged in now and preordered BF3!!! Hope they wont close it now :)
OnLive did this at first, when they required a monthly subscription. They don't require that anymore, and subsequently, don't delete your shit ever.

Uh
It's any consecutive two years now or in the future
Not just the ones leading up to now
For those saying "they only disable it!!!!", no. They actually delete the game from the profile and ask you to rebuy. They've probably changed their tune in recent years (after all they did nicely give me my 2142 back) but they are that looming cloud that won't go away.

I'm confused. They have said that if you don't use it in two years all you have to do is contact them and they will re-open your account. Sounds like they're just going to move all of the inactive accounts out of the way. I would imagine that alot of people who do not play for two years probably aren't ever going to play again, but if they decide they want to then all they have to do is ask and the account is back. I understand that the contract sounds slightly dodgy, but I would imagine most companies (Blizzard have this, but after 6 months I think) would have something similar written in their terms just to cover their own backs.

Except they've said that if you contact them they will reopen the account, which implies that they are only disabling it.
"Yes hello EA I'd like permission to use the things I purchased please"
The same goes for Steam? Valve can at any time remove your permission to play any of the games you have purchased. Infact, mobile phones work the same way. Here in the UK, if you do not use your mobile phone in something like 6-12 months then the number is cancelled and you have to ring the company back up to reactivate it.
In fact, having looked through both of the terms, EA say that if you do not use your account within 24 months then it can be cancelled for non-use. They also say that they will give you 30 days' notice before they do anything else regarding cancelling services.
Steam says that they can cancel whenever they want for no reason.
The difference is that Valve, generally speaking, is going to respect that right and reserves subscription removal for serious issues.

EA probably will disable or cancel the accounts after two years, but until they actually do that we don't know for sure.
I knew this a few weeks ago when i went to see what kind of service Origin actually is.
Also the redownload fee is fucking ridicilous.
Except they've said that if you contact them they will reopen the account, which implies that they are only disabling it.
Yet why should they disable / remove something I've paid for? I should be able to log in happily and use it as I wish (to a certain extent).
Blizzard removed their account disabling after patch 1.5. It's still in the ToS but they don't disable accounts unless you're exploiting on them.
I won't touch Origin once TOR is released and I have it downloaded. Hopefully the client will be readily available for download and I can just subscribe like any other MMO. And if after 2 years EA says NEWP and my account no longer works, I will be getting a free subscription out of them for as long as the game runs, assholes

Steam says they can, EA says they will.
EA says they may register your account for non-use too.

"Hello, banker. I'd like to receive $100 from the account I set up and the paycheck which I earned."
The situation is not ideal, and I think that EA should have thought it through when they put that in the terms of service, as it is going to cause a lot of anger and frustration among gamers, as we are seeing here. Especially considering everybody fell out with EA when they went through their douche phase a year or two ago (they're not that bad now, really). I just don't think that they 'are' going to do what everyone who hates them is claiming they are going to do. I'd imagine it's just there in case they have to. Their live contact staff all say that it is basically just being flagged for inactivity, perhaps for advertising/promotional purposes (They could use it as a way to check which accounts are active or something), or maybe just to clear up some space and get a better idea of who is using their service.
As always, alot of this hate seems aimed directly at EA, rather than Valve, who have a term in their contract that says they can remove your account + games at any time for any reason. People are basing their opinions from their views on EA, and nobody has actually experienced the process yet. People are basically complaining about something that hasn't even been released yet, there is no way to tell how shitty it is going to be.
Personally, I do not like the decision, but I heavily doubt it's going to be put into use by EA as a way to make some people buy their games twice (Honestly, the amount of people who don't log on to something for two years and then decide to play it is probably quite low anyway, I can't imagine there being much profit in it). It is probably just something they added as a fail-safe and didn't think there would be such a negative reaction to.

The argument is more like "If you don't use your car for two years then you need to get someone to help you jump start the battery" (I know that some people can do it themselves, but it's not as if the 'car' would never start again.) You just have to ask for help and then it works.
