It was essentially the first heavily scripted linear shooter.
Well, not quite. It was the first FPS with any sense of realism. And I'm not talking about "GREY AND BROWN MIDDLE EAST COVERED IN BLOOM" realism.
It's a lot darker than HL, not atmospherically but literally, there is scarce lighting. I guess it makes sense for BMRF's underground areas to be like that
The guards/scientists in Half-Life 1 were cannon fodder to me, but in BMS, I can't even aim my gun at them.
Any news on when this is coming to steam? I was going to avoid the pain of this release and just get it on steam, but now the torrent has more seeders I may give it a go.
Wll i seeded 234.2GB i hope that was enough
It's amazing how good it looks and yet runs at 150 fps. Not that so much matters, but it still shows something when a lot of newer games get about 40. [editline]15th September 2012[/editline] Shame they're very short. Most of them are only about 1:30
It actually runs surprisingly bad for me at times. It dipped as low as 24FPS at some intense open areas. And my PC plays Portal 2 at >100FPS.
The guards/scientists in Half-Life 1 were cannon fodder to me, but in BMS, I can't even aim my gun at them.
I reload whenever one dies.
This mod totally meets my expectations, the team should definitely receive some sort of recognition from valve
Having played about until halfway through Chapter 4 I have to say that I really like how the Glock you get in the beginning still retains it's usefulness even after you find the submachine gun because it's much more accurate than the smg and is capable of single-shot so it's a really economical way to snipe at the heads of enemies further away from you.
This mod totally meets my expectations, the team should definitely receive some sort of recognition from valve
They already did, in getting a free advert on Steam, from 2007 and also having BM as one of the first games ever to get released on Steam via Greenlight.
I reload whenever one dies.
My gun
I try to save every scientist I come across.
I try to save every scientist I come across.
i use them as bait
You know, I don't think any other games have tried to copy Half-Life's laser maze things (that I can recall, at least). It's a shame, I actually quite like those. It's a way to do platforming that actually works decently in first-person.
I say Black Mesa turned out to be pretty damn good, and legitimately worth the wait.
Man, reading about this is making me want to play it so bad. Fuck my shitty 500 megabytes per day bandwidth cap :(
Frankly I'm blown away by BM. The only things that I don't find to be of shockingly high quality are a) the voice acting for the military (it's not bad, it's just meh) b) the FUCKING LADDERS
a) the voice acting for the military (it's not bad, it's just meh)
Oh no, they were my favorite [editline]Today[/editline] What the hell, brain
The guards/scientists in Half-Life 1 were cannon fodder to me, but in BMS, I can't even aim my gun at them.
I think it's because in HL1 all the guards and scientists looked exactly the same.

Opinions on Black Mesa vary between 'meh' and 'awesome,' but i've gotta say that aside from a few quirks here or there, it really kinda feels like how a legit remake would be at Valve's hands. It may not be as refined or polished as HL2 or its episodes, but some of that old school design from the original mixed with the physics and additions from the sequel really breath some fresh life into the game. The jumping also felt odd to me, in response to J-Dude on the last page, yet it reminds me of Portal 2's jumps for some odd reason; Blast Pit's giant silo even reminded me of the parts from P2 where you were in Old Aperture. Well, design-wise at least. Perhaps my biggest complaint is that the dev team took liberties with enemy AI or something, making the Soldiers and Vortigaunts - hell, every ranged enemy except Controllers - a real pain in the ass due to their greatly-increased accuracy and reaction times. And those fucking turrets and the Apache chopper battles, man. Infact, the whole combat aspect of the game seems a lot tougher. But I can manage.
I feel like I am the only person who doesn't have a problem fighting the soldiers
Here's a thoughtful question for you guys though: Do you really think this was worth a 7 year wait? We're still missing Xen and the Deathmatch as well, and Coop was scrapped. Not to say that this mod is bad, I actually enjoyed it very much and I doubt I'll ever return to vanilla Half Life again. But seven years is a very long time, you must admit.

But seven years is a very long time, you must admit.
Seven years from a professional team would be bad. A game like this would take a standard studio two to four years to make. But these were a bunch of guys working on it in their free time - so everything takes twice, three times as long, because you can't work on it 40-60 hours a week. Most mods get around that by sacrificing scope (small games), or sacrificing quality (low-res games). Black Mesa didn't - it's as large as Half-Life, and at a very professional level of quality. So yeah, I can totally believe it took them this long to make it.
I'm stunned that this was even finished. 8 years working on a game that's going to be released for free, and it ends up being of a higher quality than most triple A titles today
I wonder if Valve had a play Black Mesa day with free cookies

My complaint is the lack of payment for this excellent piece of mod, I would have easily payed them 20 euros or more
Ulgh... hitting crashes a bit more frequently now. Blowing up the garg with the airstrike made one of its limbs do something to crash the engine. Before that though, the garg seems intent upon shaking the airstrike platform even when I'm not on it. It's pretty cool, seeing the garg so intent upon getting me that it's trying to knock down my shelter, but the illusion falters when I'm on the ground and it decides to keep rocking that tower... Also, that bit with the Osprey and the endless waves of soldiers? Holy SHIT is that harder in this, if only because the soldier AI is so much deadlier and relentless.
