Well at least killing him puts him out of his misery. I can imagine a man that messed up tortures himself mentally enough, not to mention if he were forced to live in a cell or an institution for the rest of his life.

Why do people always turn to "Kill! Torture! Maim!", he's already ended his own life by killing his son. Along with the mentally instability, whatever sane bits of him that remain are probably being tortured and pulled apart in his mind.
